2011 Iowa State Fair Summary

The Iowa Pork Producers Association joined the Iowa
Department Agriculture and Land Stewardship and
several other commodity groups in promoting farming
and livestock production at the Farmville display in the
Agriculture building at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
The 100th anniversary butter cow and other attractions
brought large crowds and long lines into the Ag building
and Farmville display each day.
With the help of several county pork groups, samples
of pork loin, pulled pork and other pork products were
served throughout the fair. Fareway, Hormel, John
Morrell, Johnsonville and Tyson all provided product for
sampling.
IPPA also offered consumers discount pork coupons,
recipe booklets and new temperature sticks preprogrammed
to 145º F. along with the pork samples.
Volunteers were able to visit with consumers about the
new cooking temperature and answer questions about
preparing pork.
A special cooler display located near the butter cow
featured the new pork cooking temperature and received
a lot of attention as well.
Twice during the fair, pork producers took the Farmville
stage for the daily Ask a Farmer segment. IPPA President
Leon Sheets from Ionia and IPPA Director David
Struthers from Collins talked about pork production and
answered questions from fairgoers.
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey was at
Farmville each day to provide general ag information
and answer questions about farming.
The Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Egg Council,
Midwest Dairy Association, Iowa Turkey Federation
and the Iowa Beef Industry Council also participated in
Farmville and provided samples and information.
