Centre for Defence
Acquisition and
Technology (CDAT)
This Centre builds on
the legacy of the old Royal
Military College of Science
dating back to 1864, and
delivers a range of technical
training and education through
the academic partner (Cranfield
University) as well as a variety of
Acquisition courses delivered to a
broad Defence audience by blended
learning, on-site at Shrivenham and
at out stations in Abbeywood and
London. Training courses can take the
form of short interventions of a few days;
postgraduate level education outputs
include PG Certificate, PG Diploma and
3 year long Masters Courses. HQ CDAT
is located at Shrivenham in the Defence
Capability Centre (DCC) which is also used as
a major MOD meeting / conference venue.
The Centre also incorporates the Military
Knowledge Office (MKO) responsible for
delivering professional development programmes
for Army personnel.
Defence Technical Officer and Engineer Entry
Scheme (DTOEES). The scheme incorporates
both Sixth Form entry and undergraduate level
education for candidates from all 4 services destined
for technically focussed careers. The Defence Sixth
Form College (DSFC), at Loughborough, provides a
top quality, technically focussed Sixth Form education
designed to prepare students for attendance on
technical undergraduate courses and subsequent
careers in the technical streams of all 4 services. The
defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS)
supports bursary undergraduates and in-service
degree officers for the four MOD Services at Aston,
Birmingham, Cambridge, Imperial College and UCL
London, Loughborough, Newcastle, Northumbria,
Oxford, Southampton, Strathclyde Universities to study
engineering or science degrees. Portsmouth University
will join the scheme in 2015.
Nuclear Department
The Nuclear Department is based at HMS SULTAN
in Gosport and delivers through life training and higher
level education for military and MOD civilian and support
industries personnel for the Royal Navy’s nuclear
propulsion programme.
International Engagement Group (IEG)
The International Engagement Group (IEG) was
established in 2012 and use the expertise in training,
education, advisory support and outreach and the
wider resources of the Academy, the Armed Forces and
government to support HMG’s international priorities as
set out in the International Defence Engagement Strategy,
the Building Stability Overseas Strategy, the New Deal
for Engagement in Fragile States and the FCO prosperityled
agenda. It brings together the Defence Academy’s
existing Defence Relations and International Sections and
the newly integrated cross-government National School
of Government International (NSGI) team into a single
entity designed to improve synergy and provide a better
focus for all Academy international business and related
knowledge management. The IEG will work closely
with MOD, Army, Navy and Air Force colleagues, wider
Whitehall, including the Stabilisation Unit, and other
relevant actors such as Universities and NGOs.
