The Garrison<br />

Where and What<br />

There are several estates all within approximately 10<br />

miles of <strong>Shrivenham</strong>.<br />

The Park<br />

Situated within the Station perimeter but outside the<br />

security fence these Type II and Type III detached and<br />

semi-detached quarters are reserved for lieutenant<br />

colonels and above on the Station permanent staff.<br />

Built in 1938, the majority consist of four bedrooms,<br />

a dressing room, sitting room, dining room, breakfast<br />

room and kitchen. All have large gardens, double glazing,<br />

gas central heating and power showers.<br />

Bower Green<br />

This estate consists of a mixture of 3 and 4 bedroom<br />

houses (Type V and Type IV) built in 1960 and located<br />

at the north-east end of the Station grounds. They have<br />

double glazing, gas central heating and power showers.<br />

All have garages which are mainly in blocks.<br />

Watchfield<br />

In 1974 some 142 soldiers quarters were gutted and<br />

converted into mainly Type IV officers quarters, with<br />

about 6 Type Vs. They are situated on the north side of<br />

the old A420 (Swindon-Oxford road) about half a mile<br />

from the main instructional centres. In 1992 a further 6<br />

quarters in South Street were modernised to Type V and<br />

in 1994 5 more were modernised in Hill Road to Type<br />

IV. All have double glazing, gas central heating, power<br />

showers and garages, but some are in blocks.There are<br />

also 290 new houses built to support the JSCSC. Mainly<br />

Type III & Type IVs.<br />

Days Ground and Common Close<br />

These two small adjacent estates are at the west end of<br />

the Station and are separated by the old A420. Except<br />

for one Type IV quarter all are Type V (3 bedrooms). All<br />

have had kitchens modernised in 1994 and are double<br />

glazed with gas central heating, power showers and<br />

attached garages.<br />

Chiseldon/Faringdon<br />

At Chiseldon there are eight houses which are<br />

approximately 10 miles from <strong>Shrivenham</strong>, between<br />

Swindon and Marlborough; seven type V and one type<br />

IV. All have oil fired central heating, double glazing,<br />

power showers and attached garages. At Faringdon there<br />

are 10 type V houses on a civilian estate. All are double<br />

glazed, with gas central heating, power showers and<br />

attached garages.<br />

Highworth<br />

There are 26 C Type quarters at Highworth, about 5<br />

miles from <strong>Shrivenham</strong>. They are of relatively modern<br />

design, with gas central heating, double glazing, power<br />

showers and garages attached. Applicants for these<br />

quarters must own a car and be able to drive to and<br />

from work at the Station.<br />

All quarters have wall to wall carpets and have garages<br />

allocated to each house, though not necessarily attached.<br />

The following is a general list of what is provided:<br />

Kitchen Gas cooker. Only overseas students receive<br />

kitchen and cooking utensils.<br />

General Vacuum cleaners are issued.<br />

Electrical The UK operates on a power supply of<br />

230/240 volts 50 cps. All electrical equipment from<br />

North America and from some European countries will<br />

need transforming.<br />

Get-You-In/Out-Packs Available for those returning<br />

from or posted to overseas on request to help you<br />

survive until heavy kit arrives. To be returned to the<br />

Accommodation Services Unit (ASU) within two weeks<br />

of takeover (march in). To make your quarters more<br />

like home you are advised to bring with you: silverware,<br />

glassware, china, bedcovers, table linen, lamps, pictures<br />

and ornaments.Soldiers quarters are scaled slightly<br />

differently and you should enquire from your unit what<br />

the latest inventory contains.<br />

P.F.I Housing<br />

In June 1998 the Secretary of State for Defence awarded<br />

Defence Management (Watchfield) Ltd DM (W)L a<br />

30 year contract to finance, design, build and operate<br />

the JSCSC. As a result DM(W)L procured John Laing<br />

Construction to build the college and housing, and<br />

Serco to provide key support services and Facilities<br />

Management. Throughout the concession period both<br />

the JSCSC and all 290 houses are owned by DM(W)<br />

L who are expected to maintain the buildings and<br />

immediate estate, in order to continue delivering the<br />

high standard of service to the MOD. Serco undertake<br />

the maintenance responsibility on behalf of DM(W)<br />

L and therefore any maintenance issues within your<br />

accommodation should be addressed to the Serco<br />

Service Desk on 01793 788444.<br />

Please note that the allocation of houses and general<br />

occupancy matters are not the responsibility of Serco<br />

and are handled by Carillion Amey in the normal way.<br />

The Serco Service Families Accommodation (SFA)<br />

Housing Officer is responsible for all practical day to<br />

day matters regarding the houses, their contents and<br />

grounds.<br />
