The History of Shrivenham Station
The Domesday Book of 1086 records the Manor of Becote as being held by William Count
of Evreux. William held the manor on behalf of the King, and it is believed that King John was in
residence in 1204.
Later the family of Beckett held the Manor upon the duty of making the fires in the Royal
Bedchamber. When the lands were extended in the reign of Edward III the duties were changed to
include the presentation to the King of two white capons whenever he should cross “Fowyeare’s Mill
Bridge’’. This bridge is most probably the culvert inside the gates by the north lodge.
In 1633 the Manor was bought by Sir Henry Marten, a judge. During his son’s tenancy in the Civil War
the house was partly destroyed by fire. On the death of his son, the lands were sold first to Sir George
Pratt of Coleshill, and in 1666 to John Wildman. Wildman’s son adopted John Shute as his heir and when
in 1716, Shute succeeded to the Barrington estates, he changed his name accordingly and established
Beckett as the family seat. It remained the property of the Barringtons until the estate was bought by the
War Department in 1936.
There has been a house on the present site since the Conquest, but the previous building stood to the north
of the present one which was built between 1831 and 1834. William Atkinson, its architect, was the son of a
Durham miner. He became the protégé of the Bishop Shute Barrington, and after study in London he became
Architect to the Board of Ordnance. Apart from minor alterations, including the removal of a large conservatory
at the back of the house, the property remains in much the same state as it did in the nineteenth century.
The familiar red brick buildings were erected between 1936 and 1939, and during the war Beckett House played
its part alongside these more functional blocks in housing a variety of occupiers. Units which were stationed at
Shrivenham included 131 and 132 AA Batteries, 133 OCTU(RA), a School of Anti Aircraft Defence, a US Army
Officers’ Candidate School, Schools for Signals, Police, Cooks, Bakers, Clerks, and the Civil Affairs Centre (AMGOT).
In June 1946 the Shrivenham American University was established here, and this is recorded on a tablet in the Billiard
Room. On 9 October 1946 the 1st Technical Staff Officers course assembled at Shrivenham and Beckett House became
one of the Halls of the then Military College of Science. Since then it was temporarily converted to house the college
library. However, in 2005 the library was moved to its new location in the old College Hall (as Barrington Library) and
Beckett House has now been completed a significant refurbishment to become part of the Defence Academy.

With its Headquarters and principal operation base at
Shrivenham, the schools of the Defence Academy of
the United Kingdom develop and deliver high quality
education, training, research and advice in Technology
& Acquisition, Leadership, Management, and Nuclear
technology in order to enhance the delivery of defence
capability. The schools delivers training and education
to a broad spectrum of student cohorts across Defence
and the wider security area; many courses are delivered
through the Defence Academy’s academic partner
Cranfield University who have a significant presence on
site at Shrivenham (Cranfield Defence and Security).
Locations and Output
The Defence Academy Headquarters, the Centre for
Defence Leadership & Management and the Centre
for Defence Acquisition & Technology are located at
Shrivenham. The Nuclear Department is located at
Gosport, Hampshire while elements of the Defence
Technical Officer and Engineer Entry Scheme are located
across the UK.
These schools have an annual throughput of over
22,000 students across over 400 different courses,
ranging from e-learning and short workshops to full
Masters programmes and Doctorates. Students are
primarily military and MOD civilian staff, but also include
those from overseas, UK Defence Industry, Other
Government Departments and Non-Governmental
Organisations.
CDLM aims to provide the best possible through-career
learning and development opportunities for Defence
and security professionals by delivering Leadership &
Management training and education to members of the
UK Armed Forces and Ministry of Defence Civil Servants.
This includes Leadership & Management courses,
Strategic Leadership programmes, Stress & Resilience
and Equality & Diversity training, Defence Academy
Leadership Masterclasses and “Train the Trainer” courses.
It also has a team of consultants who assist organisations
to develop as a whole alongside their people within. A
small International Section provides components of this
education to delegates from other countries, which it
delivers both overseas and in the UK.
CDLM delivers all of this through 4 main Shrivenhambased
teams which work closely to achieve output of
the highest possible quality: Leadership & Management;
Organisational Development; Concepts & Design; and
an International Section. Whilst DCTS sits on its own,
but is very much part of the collective CDLM effort. All
this activity is stalwartly supported by a very committed
Business Operations Team who, together with SERCO,
ESS and the Defence Academy HQ, enable CDLM to
deliver its core purpose: “to make Defence Better led and
managed”
Centre for Defence Leadership & Management
The Centre for Defence Leadership & Management
(CDLM) is chiefly located in the beautiful Beckett House,
at the southwest corner of the Shrivenham campus. The
Manor of Becote is recorded in the Domesday Book of
1086 and King John was in residence there in 1204. The
current house was built in 1830, an earlier one having
burnt down in the Civil War, probably at around the time
of the Battle of Faringdon in January 1646. CDLM also
has 3 outstations away from Beckett House, 2 of which
are based at the northeast corner of the Shrivenham site,
the Joint Equality & Diversity Training Centre (JEDTC)
and the Joint Stress & Resilience Centre (JSARC) and the
third, the Defence Centre for Training Support (DCTS) is
at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire.

Acquisition and
Technology (CDAT)
This Centre builds on
the legacy of the old Royal
Military College of Science
dating back to 1864, and
delivers a range of technical
training and education through
the academic partner (Cranfield
University) as well as a variety of
Acquisition courses delivered to a
broad Defence audience by blended
learning, on-site at Shrivenham and
at out stations in Abbeywood and
London. Training courses can take the
form of short interventions of a few days;
postgraduate level education outputs
include PG Certificate, PG Diploma and
3 year long Masters Courses. HQ CDAT
is located at Shrivenham in the Defence
Capability Centre (DCC) which is also used as
a major MOD meeting / conference venue.
The Centre also incorporates the Military
Knowledge Office (MKO) responsible for
delivering professional development programmes
for Army personnel.
Defence Technical Officer and Engineer Entry
Scheme (DTOEES). The scheme incorporates
both Sixth Form entry and undergraduate level
education for candidates from all 4 services destined
for technically focussed careers. The Defence Sixth
Form College (DSFC), at Loughborough, provides a
top quality, technically focussed Sixth Form education
designed to prepare students for attendance on
technical undergraduate courses and subsequent
careers in the technical streams of all 4 services. The
defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS)
supports bursary undergraduates and in-service
degree officers for the four MOD Services at Aston,
Birmingham, Cambridge, Imperial College and UCL
London, Loughborough, Newcastle, Northumbria,
Oxford, Southampton, Strathclyde Universities to study
engineering or science degrees. Portsmouth University
will join the scheme in 2015.
Nuclear Department
The Nuclear Department is based at HMS SULTAN
in Gosport and delivers through life training and higher
level education for military and MOD civilian and support
industries personnel for the Royal Navy’s nuclear
propulsion programme.
International Engagement Group (IEG)
The International Engagement Group (IEG) was
established in 2012 and use the expertise in training,
education, advisory support and outreach and the
wider resources of the Academy, the Armed Forces and
government to support HMG’s international priorities as
set out in the International Defence Engagement Strategy,
the Building Stability Overseas Strategy, the New Deal
for Engagement in Fragile States and the FCO prosperityled
agenda. It brings together the Defence Academy’s
existing Defence Relations and International Sections and
the newly integrated cross-government National School
of Government International (NSGI) team into a single
entity designed to improve synergy and provide a better
focus for all Academy international business and related
knowledge management. The IEG will work closely
with MOD, Army, Navy and Air Force colleagues, wider
Whitehall, including the Stabilisation Unit, and other
relevant actors such as Universities and NGOs.

Joint Services Command and Staff College
Background
Following studies in 1994, the United Kingdom Ministry
of Defence announced a number of major tri-Service
initiatives. The first to take effect was the establishment
of the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) at
Northwood in North London in April 1996 to plan
and execute UK led joint, combined and multinational
operations. The second was the formation of the
Joint Rapid Development Force in August 1996 (since
renamed the Joint Rapid Reaction Force) as a joint force
of up to reinforced brigade size, drawn from assigned
units, capable of rapid and global intervention across a
wide spectrum of conflict. The third was the creation of
the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC)
in January 1997. In the case of JSCSC the Chiefs of Staff
wished to:
• Maximise the opportunities for the common
understanding of the approach to warfare and defence
as a whole, consistent with the increasing importance
of the joint, combined, multinational and inter-agency
nature of future operations.
• Provide the potential for future development of the
Staff College on a combined and inter-agency basis.
The formation of the JSCSC involved the closure of the
four former Staff Colleges in the United Kingdom – the
Joint Services Defence College and the Royal Naval
Staff College at Greenwich, the Army Command and
Staff College at Camberley and the Royal Air Force Staff
College at Bracknell. The JSCSC was based at Bracknell
from 1997 to 2000 on the site of the former Royal
Air Force Staff College, and moved to the new site at
Shrivenham in August 2000. The three Component
Divisions – Royal Navy Division (RND), Army Division
(AD) and Royal Air Force Division (RAFD) also moved to
the new JSCSC at Shrivenham in August 2000, enabling
all military command and staff training to be delivered
from one site.
The JSCSC trains future commanders and staff officers
from all of the UK Armed Services and the Civil Service
as well as military officers from many countries around
the world.
Its mission is: to provide world class Command and Staff
education and training, in order to enhance operational
capability, thereby advancing the Defence and Security
interests of the United Kingdom.
Its principle courses include:
• The Higher Command and Staff Course (HCSC) – an
annual, 16 week course for approximately 33 one
star and Colonel or Service equivalent level officers
from all three Services, NATO nations and some
Government departments.
• The Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC)
– an annual, 40 week course for 280 officers at Major
to Lieutenant Colonel and Service equivalents from all
three Services, MOD Civil Servants and International
Officers from almost 50 nations.
• Component staff training courses for all three Services,
comprising a range of shorter courses that are aimed
at junior and intermediate staff training for officers
between the ages of 26 and 34. This is delivered
by the RN Division, the Army Division and the RAF
Division.
• Other courses and exercises include those for Reserve
officers and preparation for those about to attend staff
training overseas.
College Badge
The College Badge was painted
by a heraldic artist of the College
of Arms. The design is based
on the original badge granted to
the Joint Services Staff College at
Latimer in 1948 and has changed
little during the College’s various
incarnations: the Joint Services
Staff College (1946-1971);
the National Defence College
(1971-1982) the Joint Services
Defence College (1982-1997); and now the Joint
Services Command and Staff College (since 1997). The
College Motto ‘Unity is Strength’ was proposed by the
first commandant of the Joint Services Staff College, Rear
Admiral CE Douglas-Pennant CB CBE DSO DSC.
The badge has at its centre the Cormorant which was
chosen as the College emblem by the Joint Services
Staff College in March 1947 following a proposed
design by Lieutenant Colonel J B Adams, a member of
the Directing Staff. He explained that the Cormorant
was a land based sea-bird and, as such, was considered
appropriate in view of its adaptability between the three
environments in which the Services operate; land, sea
and air. It also maintains the custom of the single-Service
Staff Colleges at Greenwich, Camberley and Bracknell of
having a bird as an emblem.
Further embellishments to the badge include, below the
image, a Naval Crown, Crossed Swords and Air Force
Wings. The Royal Crown, which marks the reign of HM
Queen Elizabeth II, surmounts the Badge.

Private Finance Initiative
On 5 June 1998 the MOD signed a 30 year contract
with Defence Management (Watchfield) Ltd (DM(W)
L) to design, build, finance and operate the new Joint
Services Command and Staff College at Shrivenham,
including 290 houses, under Private Finance Initiative (PFI)
arrangement. HLM Architects were engaged to design
the new college and John Laing Construction engaged for
the construction.
Serco were awarded the contract to provide total facility
management services including the academic provision
which is sub-contracted to Kings College London who
employ approximately 50 full-time academics and
administrative staff within its Defence Studies Department
at the JSCSC.
The catering, cleaning and waste provision is also subcontracted
but to ESS.

Who are we?
Shrivenham Station and the Defence Academy have a
team of two full-time military Chaplains, a Coordinator
and a member of the local clergy who is a part-time
Officiating Chaplain to the Military (OCM).

Where are we?
The Chaplaincy Centre, containing a Chapel and the
Chaplains’ offices, is located in Building 66 (the same building
as the ‘Café and Chat’). The Chapel within the Chaplaincy
is open between 0700-1900 hrs every day, and all those
wishing to spend time in quiet prayer are welcome to visit
the Chapel.
St Alban’s Church, the Ecumenical Church of the
Shrivenham Station, is located on the families quarters
patch, opposite the Language Centre, at the junction of Folly
Crescent and Ironside Drive.
As well as being ordained ministers of Christian

The World Faiths’ Prayer Room
members of other faith communities. We can direct you to
local places of worship and to the two World Faiths’ Prayer
Rooms on site, the larger of which is located on Faringdon
Road and the smaller in the JSCSC.
What do we do?
We offer pastoral care to all personnel and their families
irrespective of status, nationality or religious belief. We
work to support the pastoral, spiritual and moral needs
of the whole community and enable the community to
practice its various faiths. Therefore, the Chaplains will
be seen around the Station in workplaces, community
centres and crew rooms. They are, of course, happy
to be invited to lectures, seminars and other events
– especially celebrations and beer calls; excellent for
everyone’s morale! Our visiting helps us to keep in touch
with what is current around the Station and to make a
unique contribution to the Shrivenham community.
Shrivenham Station and the Defence Academy are
very busy places full of challenges, both professional
and personal, and there may be occasions when
you feel the need simply to talk to someone about
what this experience is like for you, away from those
demands. Chaplains provide a Listening Ear where you
can talk through a problem in a safe environment and
comfortable surroundings. If we can’t help, we usually
know someone who can.

The team was set up in September 2004 with the
deliberate intention of improving the level of service and
assistance that is provided to those who are here as part
of the Shrivenham Station Community.
The team provides a variety of help and support; our remit
is extensive and changes daily as people present us with
different issues. Whether you have a problem with housing,
banking, a posting issue, a seemingly minor problem or a
more serious welfare issue you need to discuss, we will
try to help; if we cannot, then we will endeavor to find
someone who can. We have a large network of contacts,
the Army Families Federation, RAFA, Army Welfare Service,
Carillion Amey, Serco; to mention just a few.
If you are new to Shrivenham Station, then add us to
your list of places to visit along with the new information
room and the Jubilee Community Centre, which is
another invaluable source of information. Feel free to
drop in for a chat at any time, tea or coffee is always
available and we may even have biscuits! Please
remember, you do not need to have a problem to pay
us a social call and we are very friendly!

If circumstances should arise whilst your relative is
overseas (including N Ireland) either on a posting,
at sea, or on deployment, that make it necessary for
you to apply for his/her return on compassionate
grounds (such as a death in the family, serious illness
or serious family crisis) you should telephone:

be aware that any information will be verified with
the appropriate organisations before Compassionate
Leave Travel may be recommended and authorised.
Although you may wish to contact your relative or
his/her parent unit for advice or support, contact
the JCCC directly, so that your case can be dealt
with without delay. Your relative’s unit cannot
authorise Compassionate Travel, and therefore
any information you pass to them will have to be
forwarded to the JCCC which will waste valuable
time in dealing with your request.

The AWS provides community support and a CONFIDENTIAL social and occupational welfare support
service to all single, married, regular, and reservist soldiers and their families both serving and ex-serving.
Community Support
The purpose of AWS Community Support is to provide learning opportunities, activities and experiences that
are sociable, recreational, educational and responsive to need, but also locally accessible, affordable and of
good quality.
This provision is likely to include Pre-school groups, Community Centres, Youth Centres and projects within
the community as well as provision for children and young people during some school holidays.
To enable the best possible use of premises and resources we need your help as a volunteer. You are the vital
resource of AWS Community Support.
We believe that the best way to support our communities is to listen and develop an understanding of their
needs and concerns and then where possible facilitate a programme that meets these.

The Army Welfare Service staff are trained and knowledgeable. They are sympathetic to people’s needs and
can give confidential support to enable Service personnel and their families to cope with the stresses and strains
of Service life. The Army Welfare Service operates a strict confidentiality code; the code is fully explained in the
‘Confidentiality Code’ leaflet available from your Army Welfare Service Office. Everyone who works within The
Army Welfare Service is required to follow the confidentiality code no matter who they are.

Each Commanding Officer is responsible for the welfare of the officers and soldiers of his unit. He is also responsible
for the welfare of their families. However, it may sometimes be necessary for a soldiers married partner or the soldier

The Voluntary Network
All men and women serving in the Armed Forces, and their families, are eligible for help from the voluntary network
of SSAFA Forces Help. With 5,000 trained volunteers throughout the British Isles, help is always close at hand. In your
local volunteer you have a friend who is independent of the Service organisations; is sympathetic and knowledgeable;
will treat your conversations as strictly confidential and can offer practical help and support when needed. The joint
SSAFA Forces Help network does, of course, help tens of thousands of ex-Service people and their families every year
and the work is increasing. Many branches are constantly in need of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.
Relate – Marriage Guidance
Relate, formerly known as the Marriage Guidance council, offers a confidential service to those having difficulties in
their marriage or other personal relationships.

Adoption
Adoption is a way of providing a new family for children who cannot be brought up by their own parents. We
especially need adopters living in areas bordering Swindon to adopt Swindon children. We welcome families and
individuals in the Forces to contact us as we are very happy to explore with them their interest in adoption by offering
them an individual session with an adoption social worker. We have positive experiences of taking Forces families
through the adoption process and are still in touch with those who have moved with their adopted children to new
postings.

The Shrivenham Station Welfare Officer (SWO) and his
team acts as the Commanding Officer’s Representatives
for the welfare matters concerning all ranks under
command both married and single, and their immediate
families, including International Personnel and their
families.
Role
To provide a professionally based confidential welfare
support service, responsive to the needs of individuals,
families and the chain of command, to enhance the
morale and well-being of all personnel, and their
dependants, in order to maximise the operational
effectiveness of our servicemen, women and civilian
component within Shrivenham Station. The Station
Welfare Officer is an approachable interface for families
within the military and is the focal point for all personnel
on welfare matters. The Officer aids the social integration
of individuals and families new to the unit and is the
focal point for information about the unit. Within the
limitations of their knowledge, the SWO advises and
assists those personnel and families who approach
him for help or who are referred by the unit chain of
command (or outside organisations). He then refers
them to the appropriate specialist welfare agency when
there is a need to do so.
Liaison
The SWO is the point of contact for all three services.
The SWO provides advice and support to those in the
unit chain of command, who may be involved in helping
soldiers or their families with personal problems. The
SWO liaises closely with Chaplains, Medical Officers
and other staff who have responsibilities for their
unit personnel and families. The SWO and his team
assists in Station community facilities such as DAFFY’s,
SSAFA the newly established community development
worker, the local schools, MOD Police, Military Police,
Health Visitors, Midwives and Carillion Amey Ops

The Soldiers’ Charity began as the Army Benevolent
Fund in 1944. We are very proud of our rich history and
are determined to make the most of the opportunities
ahead of us, building on the last 70 years of success and
support.
Today, the conflicts may be different, but the pressures
on our soldiers remain. As we are all too aware from
the news, the Army is bearing the strain of the current
conflicts. Hundreds of soldiers have been killed in
Afghanistan and Iraq with many more injured both

Sailors & Families Advice Bureau (SAFAB)
Part of the service provided by NPFS, and under the
direct supervision of the Area Officers at the three
base ports, SAFAB is the Navy’s own version of the
Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). It provides a wealth of
information and advice across a broad range of Service
and civilian issues that are relevant to RN/RM personnel
and their families. They are an ideal starting point when
seeking advice or information on any issue and provide a
confidential service.

Families Information Link Line (FILL)
A regularly updated recorded message telephone
information line for participating ships to provide families
with general details of an individual unit’s deployment
activities. Signal message text from the ship/RM unit
is recorded by SAFAB staff and accessible day or night
by families holding the relevant number. The cost of
telephoning the FILL is 5p per minute, the minimum
tariff that phone companies charge for the service.
Commanding Officers are instructed to keep the
messages to no more than 2 minutes in length.
LINK Letter Scheme (LLS)
LLS is a scheme through which information such as
changes to ships’ programmes, details of unexpected
incidents etc., can be rapidly disseminated from deployed
ships or units to family and friends at home. This assists
in reducing family concerns and anxiety by providing
accurate and speedy news direct from source, helping
to allay concerns of families in receipt of media reports
or second-hand stories. Commanding Officers via their
nominated Link Letter Officer decide when to activate
the LLS and signal their news to the relevant SAFAB
who then despatch the information by first or second
class post to the nominated relatives or friends of those
Service personnel who are in the scheme. All members
of a unit are automatically included in the scheme unless
they ‘opt out’ in writing. RM Units also operate this
system when necessary.
Information Sheets
Some information sheets are produced and updated
by SAFAB on eg.LLS, FILL and a range of other Naval
and general topics of interest and relevance to Naval
personnel and their families. These information sheets
should be held by all ships and establishments (normally
by the Unit Personnel Office) or are available direct from
your nearest SAFAB office or on www.rnreference.
mod.uk.
Enquiries are welcome from Divisional Officers,
individuals or families and can be made by a personal call,
telephone, letter or fax.
Out of working hours, urgent enquiries are normally
answered by the Officer of the Day who will pass
information to Duty NPFS staff for action as necessary.
Naval Supportline
A confidential and impartial telephone listening
and advice service offered by specially trained
civilian advisers who will discuss any issue
which may causing concern or personal
distress. Operators will endeavour to
identify possible sources of support
or resolution, but the Supportline
will take no direct action. Callers
may remain anonymous and no
names are taken.

The Sailors and Families Advice
Bureau (SAFAB)
The Garrison Station
The Sailors and Families Advice Bureau (SAFAB for short)
is the Advice Bureau for Royal Navy and Royal Marine
Personnel, their families, Ex-Service personnel and their
dependants and is a part of the Naval Personal and Family
Service (NPFS).
SAFAB hold information on a vast number of subjects and
will always try to find an answer to a query. The main
queries are around how to communicate when ships are
deployed.
Information sheets are generated by SAFAB and cover
a wide range of topics including, Education, Housing
Advice, Drafts, Family Information, Debt, Nautical
Charities and Naval Community Centre Information,
E-mails and other Agencies.
For the Navy SAFAB administer the Link Letter Scheme
(LLS) for when units are deployed. Personnel can choose
one or two addressees to receive the letter and they do
not have to be the next of kin.
A letter is received from the ship/Unit deployed and is
then posted to family and friends on the Unit’s database.
This system comes into it’s own for sudden programme
changes. As well as LLS, SAFAB also administer the Families
Information Link Line (FILL). Families and friends can access
a recorded message about the deployed unit. The SAFAB
Office records these messages. The information recorded
is of news about the deployment and is particularly useful
for promoting changes to the unit’s programme. Personal
messages can sometimes be recorded for the families to
hear.
When a ship returns from deployment SAFAB and NPFS
will attend to meet the families and hear feedback on
how the families felt the deployment went.
SAFAB’s opening hours are 0930-1500 hrs, Monday to
Friday.

The Welfare of Royal Marines and
their Families
The Royal Marines Welfare Organisation provides welfare support for all serving Royal Marines
and their families.
They provide a confidential service and can be contacted in emergencies 24 hours a day, 365
days a year. Being Unit based Welfare SNCOs in the main deal with welfare issues involving
members of that Unit, whether it is the serving person or a member of their family, however
Welfare Staff do work across Unit boundaries depending on who is best placed to deal with

The RNBT Family
From the day they join the Royal Navy or Royal Marines,
all ratings and other ranks are part of the RNBT Family;
so are their wives, husbands and dependant children.
For the rest of their lives they may seek help from the
RNBT at times of need.
The RNBT Family, which numbers about 2 million, may
be assisted in the following ways:
• Financial grants covering a very wide range of individual
needs
• Regular payments supplementing the income of older
people
• Care of older people at Pembroke House, the RNBT’s
care home near Chatham
• Financial assistance to other organisations which assist
the RNBT Family
• Advice on welfare matters.

The RNBT gives almost 100 grants every week to
members of the RNBT Family who need financial help, in
a variety of circumstances, including:

• Food, Clothing and Fuel
• Child care
• Medical treatment and disability aids
• Respite and recuperative holidays
• Household goods and house repairs
• Training for second careers
• Debts
In addition to these one off grants, annuities (or regular
grants) of £130 each quarter are paid to assist more than
1100 older people on very low incomes.

Medical and Dental Arrangements
Medical Centre
The Medical Centre, Shrivenham Station has been a part
of the new Defence Primary Healthcare organisation since
its formation on 1 Apr 13 and is in the Central Region.
The clinical team consists of 2x Medical Officers, a
Physiotherapist and 2x Practice Nurses and the admin
team is made up of a Practice Manager, Office Manager,
Receptionist and a Practice Administrator.
Military personnel currently based at or on a course at
the Defence Academy are entitled to treatment within
the Medical Centre. This includes MPGS, FTRS(FC) and
personnel from overseas. Please note that TA personnel
on official duty are entitled to urgent treatment only ie a
condition that initially occurs or is aggravated whilst at the
Defence Academy; for any further treatment they will be
referred back to their own GP.
FTRS(HC) personnel, civilian staff and families are not
able to register at this practice.
The opening times for the Medical Centre are 0800-
1630 hrs Monday to Thursday and 0800-1600 hrs on
Friday, it is closed for lunch 1230-1330 hrs
Appointments can be made in person or by phoning
5552 or (01793) 785552. If you need to be seen after
duty hours for a condition that cannot wait until the
Medical Centre re-opens you must contact
(01793) 541655 (between 1630-1830 hrs only) or
(01793) 646466 (between 1830-0800 hrs, weekends
and bank holidays).
In case of an emergency, at any time you must phone
999 immediately, if the incident is on site you must also
notify the Main Gate Reception via 5615 or
(01793) 785615 so that the ambulance can be escorted
to the correct location.
Maternity and Baby Facilities
Maternity cases are usually referred to the Great
Western Hospital (GWH), Swindon.
Post-natal supervision of the new mum is carried out at
the Medical Centre, however the baby will have to be
registered with a local NHS practice.
A Well Baby Clinic is held in the Jubilee Centre every
Wednesday 1000-1130 hrs. As well as the weighing of
babies, it gives the opportunity to discuss any relevant
problems with the Health Visitor, who can be contacted
on 01793 783724.
Dental Facilities
Dental treatment for British Service personnel can be
arranged through the Dental Centre on 5223 or (01793)
785223. Foreign and Commonwealth Students are
entitled to emergency treatment only, ie for the relief of
pain.

who will in turn contact the duty dental team. Please be
advised that you may be required to travel to the duty
dental centre.
Dependants and civilians are not entitled to dental
treatment at Shrivenham Defence Academy Dental
Centre. Non-entitled personnel may use the Dental
Access Centres in Carfax Street Health Centre 01793
428504 for urgent care, however they are advised to call
for an appointment in advance.

Where and What
There are several estates all within approximately 10
miles of Shrivenham.
The Park
Situated within the Station perimeter but outside the
security fence these Type II and Type III detached and
semi-detached quarters are reserved for lieutenant
colonels and above on the Station permanent staff.
Built in 1938, the majority consist of four bedrooms,
a dressing room, sitting room, dining room, breakfast
room and kitchen. All have large gardens, double glazing,
gas central heating and power showers.
Bower Green
This estate consists of a mixture of 3 and 4 bedroom
houses (Type V and Type IV) built in 1960 and located
at the north-east end of the Station grounds. They have
double glazing, gas central heating and power showers.
All have garages which are mainly in blocks.
Watchfield
In 1974 some 142 soldiers quarters were gutted and
converted into mainly Type IV officers quarters, with
about 6 Type Vs. They are situated on the north side of
the old A420 (Swindon-Oxford road) about half a mile
from the main instructional centres. In 1992 a further 6
quarters in South Street were modernised to Type V and
in 1994 5 more were modernised in Hill Road to Type
IV. All have double glazing, gas central heating, power
showers and garages, but some are in blocks.There are
also 290 new houses built to support the JSCSC. Mainly
Type III & Type IVs.
Days Ground and Common Close
These two small adjacent estates are at the west end of
the Station and are separated by the old A420. Except
for one Type IV quarter all are Type V (3 bedrooms). All
have had kitchens modernised in 1994 and are double
glazed with gas central heating, power showers and
attached garages.
Chiseldon/Faringdon
At Chiseldon there are eight houses which are
approximately 10 miles from Shrivenham, between
Swindon and Marlborough; seven type V and one type
IV. All have oil fired central heating, double glazing,
power showers and attached garages. At Faringdon there
are 10 type V houses on a civilian estate. All are double
glazed, with gas central heating, power showers and
attached garages.
Highworth
There are 26 C Type quarters at Highworth, about 5
miles from Shrivenham. They are of relatively modern
design, with gas central heating, double glazing, power
showers and garages attached. Applicants for these
quarters must own a car and be able to drive to and
from work at the Station.
All quarters have wall to wall carpets and have garages
allocated to each house, though not necessarily attached.
The following is a general list of what is provided:

Get-You-In/Out-Packs Available for those returning
from or posted to overseas on request to help you
survive until heavy kit arrives. To be returned to the
Accommodation Services Unit (ASU) within two weeks
of takeover (march in). To make your quarters more
like home you are advised to bring with you: silverware,
glassware, china, bedcovers, table linen, lamps, pictures
and ornaments.Soldiers quarters are scaled slightly
differently and you should enquire from your unit what
the latest inventory contains.
P.F.I Housing
In June 1998 the Secretary of State for Defence awarded
Defence Management (Watchfield) Ltd DM (W)L a
30 year contract to finance, design, build and operate
the JSCSC. As a result DM(W)L procured John Laing
Construction to build the college and housing, and
Serco to provide key support services and Facilities
Management. Throughout the concession period both
the JSCSC and all 290 houses are owned by DM(W)
L who are expected to maintain the buildings and
immediate estate, in order to continue delivering the
high standard of service to the MOD. Serco undertake
the maintenance responsibility on behalf of DM(W)
L and therefore any maintenance issues within your
accommodation should be addressed to the Serco
Service Desk on 01793 788444.
Please note that the allocation of houses and general
occupancy matters are not the responsibility of Serco
and are handled by Carillion Amey in the normal way.
The Serco Service Families Accommodation (SFA)

Allocations
As in all other stations in the UK, SFA is allocated by
Carillion Amey (for Shrivenham Station this is South East).
At certain times of the year, most, if not all the SFA is
occupied. The summer period is critical. Priority is given to
those who cannot remain at the duty station after posting
because of security. Next come those who are returning
or joining the Station from overseas and this may affect
those coming from NW Europe who must give GFA three
weeks notice of an address in the UK where their baggage
is to be delivered. Finally the lowest priority goes to those
who are already in the UK.
We will do our best to give you as much warning as
possible of where you will be living, but sometimes
circumstances will not allow us to give you a quarter in
the area or estate of your choice.
Courses of Six Months Duration
We are only allowed to allocate quarters to those who
are attending courses of at least six months duration.
The only exception to this rule is those from overseas
who are attending a number of courses or attachments
to other Ministry of Defence establishments and whose
total stay in the UK is longer than six months.
Overseas Students
Foreign and Commonwealth families, if they have
entitlement to SFA, will obviously want to plan their
moves early and will want to know where to send
their heavy baggage. Carillion Amey will normally liaise
through the Head of International Student Liaison,
obtaining an agreed date when you can occupy your new
home. Very often this will depend on when someone
from your country already at the Station intends to vacate
and we will allocate that quarter to you. Sometimes this
is not possible, either because the previous occupant
is staying on after you have arrived or because there is
no one from your country in a quarter at Shrivenham.
We will then provide you with somewhere else on the
families quarters.
Council Tax
Some Foreign and Commonwealth families will be
eligible for total exemption from this charge. They will be
asked to complete an Application for Exemption Form
held by Academic Registry at the College.
Accommodation
Moving Out
When the time comes to vacate your quarter, you
should remember that someone else will probably move
in and take over the house at the same time. The state
and cleanliness will reflect on you. You should therefore
leave the place in the state which you would want to
take it over. Some reminders on preparing a quarter for
handover are listed later in this section.
Students should particularly remember that those coming
on succeeding courses get as anxious as you did about
when they can be accommodated. You should inform
the Carillion Amey as early as possible when you are
going, so that they can tell the newcomer when they can
move in. That person can then plan his move.
Once a posting order has been received, students should
apply for a SFA at their new station as soon as possible.
They should then arrange their pre-move out advisory
visit and book their move out as soon as they have their
new address. In Jul/Aug/Sep as you can imagine the
time scale to move students in/out is extremely tight,
please book your move out as soon as possible. Once a
date has been arranged by you to move out, your SFA
will then be allocated to an incoming student. Changes
to your move out date can therefore only be made in
extreme cases, as it will cause great inconvenience to the
incoming occupant.
Overseas Students
You should start planning your move back to your own
country sometime in May/June. We don’t want to say
a hurried farewell to you at the end of your stay in the
UK or seem inhospitable, but please remember that
someone else from overseas may require your quarter
as soon as you have vacated. As soon as you know your
arrangements please book a time and date for your premove
out advisory visit and moving out. If all the times
on a chosen date are already booked then we may have
to ask you to choose another date, probably a day or so
earlier. You may have to stay a night or two in a hotel
and most of you get allowances to cover that eventuality.
Before contacting a fellow countryman coming on next
year’s course to take on hired appliances, make sure that
he will be allocated to your quarter.

What is the JSHAO?
The JSHAO provides Service Personnel and their dependants with civilian housing information and advice.
We can advise on how best to access Social Housing, and offer guidance on all other civilian housing
options available to you.
Housing Briefings
We provide a range of housing briefings for Service Personnel. Our Civilian Housing Briefings are held at
Regional Resettlement Centres in the UK and Education Centres in Germany and Cyprus.
These ½ day briefs are designed to give you the information to help you make informed choices on your
civilian housing. While Civilian Housing Briefings are normally attended in the last two years of Service, any
Service Personnel and/or their partner is welcome at any stage of their Service.
The MoD Referral Scheme
The JSHAO runs the Ministry of Defence Referral Scheme. This scheme may be able to help you if you
are looking for Housing Association housing on leaving the Service. Applicants can apply for housing in
a number of areas, however we cannot guarantee that accommodation will become available in your
chosen areas, or that applicants will be housed through the scheme. For more information and application

Reporting Faults through the CarillionAmey
Helpdesk
The CarillionAmey Helpdesk telephone number is:

The Helpdesk is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a week and provides a translation line for non English speakers. All
faults should be reported to the Helpdesk, to report a fault, you will need to call the Helpdesk and provide the Agent
with the following information:
• Name • Address • Telephone number • Details of defect or problem reported.
The Agent is likely to ask you a series of questions to help identify the problem
in more detail. We may also need to inspect the problem before arranging work and whether there is any immediate
action you should take.
The Helpdesk advisor will then agree an appointment, with you based
on the response times below:
• Emergency – attend within three hours and make safe within 24 Hours
• Urgent – Attend and rectify the problem within working five days
• Routine – Attend and rectify the problem within 15 working days
You will be provided with an AM or PM appointment on an agreed date for all your Response maintenance requests
reported to the Helpdesk. You will then receive an appointment letter or email depending on your preference
confirming the details for Urgent and Routine jobs.
Emergency calls are defined as a problem that could have immediate consequence for your health, safety and security, or
where it is necessary to prevent serious damage to the property. In these circumstances, if a repair is complicated, it will
be made safe
until a permanent repair can be organised.
Examples of Emergency Call Outs include:
• Total loss of electrical power or light • Blockage to your only toilet.
• Blocked drains (but not gullies blocked by leaves etc.) • Loss of water supply.
• Burst pipes or taps that will not turn off (but not dripping taps) • Severe roof leaks.
• Loss of heating in winter when no other heating is available, especially where
children or elderly people are affected.
Please be aware that:
• If you call out a contractor to complete an emergency repair, which is not justified, then you may be charged for the
costs involved.
• Emergency problems will be made safe within 24 hrs. (Permanent repairs longer)
• If the contractor is unable to obtain reasonable access to emergency and urgent repairs they will be downgraded to
routine.
Please note: Under extreme circumstances, when there is a clear and present danger to occupants, you may be
instructed to vacate the premises until the danger can be made safe.

If you smell Gas or lose your Gas supply TURN OFF THE GAS SUPPLY AT THE METER and refer to your Occupants
Handbook or the Gas page in the Telephone Book for other precautionary measures.

invalid gas safety certificate, except to make a system safe.

The Cottage Nursery
The Cottage Nursery which is located adjacent
to the Jubilee Centre in Watchfield is a Day Care
Nursery and Pre-School registered with OFSTED
and is a registered charity limited by guarantee.
Catering for both military children and local
residents, The Cottage Nursery takes children from 3
months to 4 years 11 months and is organised into five
rooms to cater for the different age ranges.
Each room within The Cottage Nursery has a qualified
supervisor who heads up a professional, friendly and
highly motivated team of staff. There is a wide range
of facilities, toys and equipment to cater for each age
group with babies having their own self-contained area
in the Nursery. An extensive outside play area and
garden, which is under-going a major refurbishment this
summer, offers separate play areas for the different age
groups. Football sessions and French lessons are offered
to children age 2 and above as extra-curricular activities,
with outside agencies coming in to run the sessions.
The whole nursery follows the Early Years Foundation
Stage working towards the nationally approved Early
Learning Goals which prepares the children to progress
with confidence through the Foundation Stage. Individual
care and attention is made possible by the high ratio of
adults to children and there is a system in place across all
the rooms which ensures that the planned curriculum is
tailored to the needs of each individual child.
The Cottage Nursery is open from 0800-1800 hrs
Monday to Friday for 50 weeks a year. Booked sessions
are paid for monthly in advance. Nursery vouchers
are accepted and up to 15 hours of funding for 3 & 4
year olds is offered, we can also offer funded places for

The State School System
The Education Garrison
State schools provide free tuition, but if the child is required to board a boarding fee is charged.There are two stages of
children’s education, primary and secondary. Primary schools accept children who are 5 years old at the beginning of
the school term, and transfer them to secondary schools at the school year (September) following their 11th birthday.
These age limits are strictly enforced. Head teachers can also refuse admission to children whose ability does not
enable them to benefit from the education provided.
Parents of children who do not speak English should seek advice from the Oxford Education Officer before arriving at
Shrivenham.

We run a Stay & Learn group and Watchfield Village Hall on Thursdays
between 1.00pm and 2.30pm. In the Faringdon Children’s Centre
we run a variety of groups for pre-school children and their parents/
carers. These include a Stay & Learn group for parents/carers with
children up to 5 years on a Tuesday. A Baby group for pregnant mums,
parents/carers with babies up to 2 years on a Tuesday from
1.00pm to 2.30pm. A young parents group for under 25 year old
parents on a Wednesday from 1.00pm to 2.30pm.

We have outreach workers who offer advice and support to individual
families with pre-school children living in Watchfield, Shrivenham,
Faringdon and the surrounding villages. The advice offered can be
around parenting, play, behaviour, 1-2-1 support and other information
on anything to do with being a family.

The Jubilee Community Centre
The Jubilee Centre provides facilities for Service
personnel and their families from both the United
Kingdom and overseas together with all other Station
Personnel. The Station Welfare Officer and the Station
Welfare Warrant Officer and a small team of staff man
the Centre. The Centre includes a ‘soft play’ area for
younger children whilst parents enjoy refreshments from
the Coffee Shop, which is run by ESS. The idea behind
the centre is to give the families (and of course staff and
students) a place to meet old and new friends of differing
nationalities in a friendly and personal environment. A
large number of activities are hosted in the centre, full
details of all activities and other items of interest can be
seen on the Centre notice boards. If you have ideas or
are looking to start an activity, please contact the Centre
Administrator on 785927. The Centre is also available
for private functions (children’s parties a speciality) for
a small hire charge. In addition, a number of “clinics”
are held regularly at the Centre by the Health Visitor,
Midwives, the Community Policeman, Army Welfare
Service, Serco/DIO SFA and MHS. All these are well
advertised and held for the benefit of the Families at
Shrivenham Station. The Jubilee Centre is located just
outside the main entrance to the Station, on Faringdon
Road, and it is recommended that a visit to this most
valuble and informative centre will provide you with
details of what is happening locally.
The Community Centre is open 0830-1630hrs Monday
to Thursday, 1530hrs Friday, with the Coffee Shop open
from 0900-1500hrs.

Situated within the main perimeter, this provides further
bookable space for parties and other
Gatherings and is co-ordinated by the JCC Administrator.

The Friends and Families of the Defence Academy at Shrivenham Station (DAFFYS)
The Friends and Families of the Defence Academy is an organisation for the spouses and families at Shrivenham Station.
Run by a multi-national committee of spouses, DAFFYS organises activities throughout the year for families, couples
and spouses based here in Shrivenham.
DAFFYS aims to ensure your time at Shrivenham Station is enjoyable, with plenty of opportunities to experience new
things and make new friends.
Every month we hold a Coffee Morning at the Jubilee Centre; this is a great chance to meet people, enjoy a free hot
drink and homemade cake, and browse through a selection of interesting stalls.
Other events include Ladies’ International Bring-a-Dish & Games nights, the Children’s Christmas Party, the Christmas
Bazaar and the very popular Ladies’ Lunches in the Mess. There are also visits to the Tank Sheds, Tours of the Defence
Academy and Wine Tasting evenings. Children are also catered for at the extremely popular film nights in the Mess at
the Popcorn Club. Deleted a chunk about Visiting group The summer sees us hosting the annual Shrivenham Station
Bake Off Competition, and biannually we invite people to attend the Cook with DAFFYS events which investigates
some of our more quirky British Traditions.
The mission of DAFFYS is to enable all families, British, International and from all faiths, to get together for the purpose
of building friendships, offering support and having fun.
The DAFFYS are a participant driven organisation and rely on volunteers to sponsor and manage the activities for the
Defence Academy community.

the Distribution List. You will then be sent regular updates of what’s going on.

Activities at Shrivenham
Shrivenham Station contains a number of first class
facilities, all of which are available to staff, students and
dependants.
For those interested in physical activities there are the
clubs run by the Athletic Union (AU). The AU exists to
oversee and coordinate all sporting activities across the
Defence Academy and to encourage the growth and
level of participation in sporting activities. There are a
very wide range of such activities on campus, and they
are advertised on the Defence Academy Intranet Site
(the DAIS). For security reasons these contacts are not
made available across the Internet (www), but all staff
working within the Defence Academy (military and
civilian) can access the AU website.
All Mess Members and their dependents are
automatically members of the AU providing access to
the wide range of sporting activities – some of which will
require a small membership fee. In addition to all the
classic sports (such as rugby, football, cricket, hockey,
tennis and squash), the Shrivenham site benefits from
a Golf Club which will accept members of any ability,
a Saddle Club, an outdoor swimming pool (open
between May and September), a running and fitness
trail and well-equipped fitness centre. There are two
gyms – Burgoyne House and in the JSCSC, both of
which require users to complete an induction. Many
other sports are catered for – ranging from waterskiing
to polo; fencing to mountaineering; and from martial arts
to cycling – so there should be something for everyone!
Membership of all clubs and societies is open to all staff
and their dependants.
In addition, those who are interested in other activities
may wish to join one or more of the activities controlled
by the Arts Council. The Academy Players meet regularly
in the Charles Grace Theatre and lay on a number of
productions each year. Other clubs and societies include
the Military Wives Choir, the Photographic Society, the
Arts Society, the Defence Academy Wargames Club, the
Academy Quilters and the Defence Academy Ladies’

Athletic Union
The Athletic Union exists to oversee and coordinate
all sporting activities across the Defence Academy and
to encourage the growth and level of participation
in sporting activities. There is a very wide range of
sporting activities on campus which are advertised on

security reasons those contacts are not made available

There are two Officers’ Messes on the station.
1. JSCSC – Located in the Cormorant building
2. Station – Centred on Kitchener Hall and including
Roberts Hall and Beckett House.
Other Ranks
The Sergeants’ Mess serves both permanent staff and
visiting students.
The Junior Ranks Club provides messing facilities and a
bar for those entitled.
Shrivenham Art Society
The Shrivenham Art Society is a small group of keen
amateur artists who meet regularly to follow our hobby.
The Society meets during term time on Wednesday
mornings (1000-1200) in the Arts Centre (behind the
College Theatre). Our programme covers many aspects
of painting and drawing with contributions coming from
invited tutors and demonstrators as well as members.
Some sessions will be ‘do your own thing’ when you are
able to paint and draw in the company of other artists.
Also, about once a month we hold a full-day workshop
– usually led by a professional artist, that helps to develop
different aspects of techniques.
Twice a year we hold exhibitions in the forum of the
JSCSC where our members are able to display (and
hopefully sell) their work. These have proved very
popular events in the Defence Academy Calendar and
are held in June & December each year.

Around and About
Swindon is not only a major town, it also has within
the Borough boundaries beautiful countryside, historic
market towns & many delightful villages.
To the northeast of Swindon you can visit the historic
market town of Highworth. Once described by John
Betjeman as “one of the most charming and unassuming
country towns in the West of England”. Highworth is still
charming with many fine 17th and 18th Century buildings
in the High Street and Square. From Highworth it is an
easy drive to the Cotswold town of Lechlade, where
the River Thames begins its working life and you can
experience some delightful walks and even a boating trip
on the river.
To the south of Swindon are the glorious Marlborough
Downs. You can experience one of the best views across
Swindon and Wiltshire at Barbury Castle. This Iron Age
Hill Fort allows direct access onto the Ridgeway and is
believed to be the site of a battle where Cynric defeated
the Britons in 556AD. A walk, or cycle, west along the
Ridgeway will lead you to the White Horse at Hackpen,
just one of the many to be found throughout the county,
and onto the prehistoric stone circles at Avebury.
There are numerous other villages and small towns
around the borough. Blunsdon is really two villages
on either side of the Roman Ermin Way – now
the A419 Cirencester road – and is the location of
Swindon Stadium where you can regularly experience
the excitement of speedway and greyhound racing.
Bishopstone and Wanborough are to the east of Swindon
close to the Ridgeway and are both attractive villages
with thatched cottages and interesting churches.
Closer to the main town you can visit the Coate Water
Country Park. The park has a 56 acre lake, which was
originally a reservoir for the Wilts and Berks canal, fishing
and boating activities are available in the summer months.
There are signed walks, children’s play area, pitch & putt,
mini golf an open air pool and a café.
In Old Town you will find the beautiful Town Gardens.
This splendid Victorian Park was opened in 1894. The
ornate bandstand is used for free concerts on Sunday
afternoons throughout the summer. The Gardens also
has the Burmah Castrol Bowl – one of the few concert
bowls built in the UK. The Bowl is used throughout the
summer for concerts.

History & Heritage
Dynamic change and innovation are features of a
town that has become one of Britain’s greatest success
stories. Swindon is now home to many National and
International businesses yet it also cherishes its past, of
which the Railway Age was a brief, yet important, part.
The Great Western Railway Works were one of the
largest industrial enterprises in Europe and dominated
the life of Swindon for 150 years. They produced some
of the finest locomotives and carriages the world has
ever seen. STEAM – Museum of the Great Western
Railway offers a great day out for the family. Young and
old will find plenty to enjoy at STEAM, which celebrates
‘God’s Wonderful Railway’. STEAM has entertained
thousands of visitors with the remarkable human stories
behind the magnificent locomotives on display. Visitors
can climb aboard the famous ‘King George V’ or drive
a steam train on a realistic simulator. Continue with the
railway theme and visit the original Railway Village. Here
you can discover the domestic life of a Victorian railway
worker. The Swindon & Cricklade Railway, Wiltshire’s
only heritage steam railway, allows you to step back into
a bygone era and take a ride on a standard gauge steam
train.
On the other side of the town centre is Old Town
where you can discover the original market town that
was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Old Town is
home to the Swindon Museum which displays exhibits
of local history, archaeology and geology. Next door to
the Swindon Museum is the Swindon Art Gallery which
houses one of the finest collections of 20th Century
British Art. The collection includes works by Henry
Moore, Graham Sutherland, L S Lowry, Paul Nash and
many more.
One of Swindon’s most surprising treasures is waiting
for you to discover in West Swindon. Lydiard Park and
House is the ancestral home of the Viscounts Bolingboke.
The elegant country house is set in rolling parkland and
has entertained both Queen Elizabeth I and Queen
Elizabeth II. Stroll through the rooms of the house and
walk through some of the surrounding 250 acres of
parkland, paths and trails.
To the south of Swindon you will find the Science
Museum at Wroughton, which houses the National
Science Museum’s larger objects, including aircraft,
vintage cars motorbikes, Wurlitzers, buses and
agricultural machinery. The extensive collections can
be viewed on special open days that are held by the
museum.

At the Great Western Designer Outlet village, with over
100 designers label stores and discounts of between
30 and 50 per cent on top brands you’re sure to
find something that will catch your eye. The fabulous
selection of stores includes the L K Bennett Hobbs,
Charles Tyrwhitt, Timberland, Thomas Pink and Ted
Baker. There is also a great selection of top high street
brands that include Gap, Next, Marks & Spencer and
many more. The dedicated ‘At Home’ section offers
everything from china and crystal to home furnishing and
kitchenware shops.
What makes the Outlet Village so unique is its setting in
the splendidly restored Victorian buildings of the Great
Western Railway Works, where original memorabilia
has been restored. A rare collection of overhead cranes
adorn the malls while the large central food court is
dominated by a Great Western Locomotive – currently
Hagley Hall, whose sister locomotive starred in Harry
Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone, hauling the Hogwarts
Express.
The popular weekly Farmers’ Market is held outside the
Swindon Designer Outlet every Sunday from 1000-1600
hrs.
Old Town offers a more traditional shopping
environment, where you will find several long established
family businesses. Offerings include antiques, jewellery,
unusual home furnishings, books and art.
The town centre offers a fabulous mixture of shops.
Many of these are located within the Brunel Shopping
Centre. Here you will find big brand names such
as Marks & Spencer, House of Fraser, as well as the
specialist stores that include John Anthony and Forum.
The Parade, with its distinctive and decorative canopies,
houses even more shops as does Regent Street and
Canal Walk. Take a relaxing break from shopping in one
of the café bars, pubs or restaurants.
The Farmers Market is held on the second Friday of each
month in Canal Walk, buy fresh produce straight from
the farm. A great choice of jams, pickles, cheeses, soups,
pastries, olives, organic produce, herbs and much more.
Shopmobility is available for anyone with limited mobility
and provides a selection of manual and powered
wheelchairs and scooters to help people with mobility
difficulties to shop and use the facilities in the Town
Centre.

Out-Of-Town Shopping
Swindon has many out-of-town shopping centres with
large stores selling a range of goods and services covering
virtually anything you might need. All of the out-of-town
centres have extensive car parking facilities
To the North of Swindon located in the Abbey Meads/
Priory Vale area of north Swindon is the most recent
addition to Swindon’s out-of-town complexes. The
Asda-Walmart complex is one of Europe’s largest
superstores. This vast shopping centre covers virtually
all shopping needs under one roof: food, clothes, home
improvements materials and much more are all readily
available. The complex also includes a multitude of
retailer outlets including Next, JJB’s, Homebase, Borders
book shop, Comet, a Travel Agents, several Estate
Agents, a Bookmakers, and even a library.
To the East of Swindon
Towards east Swindon is the Greenbridge Retail and
Leisure Park. Covering several acres, the facilities include
large-store facilities for a range of household brands like
Boots, Mothercare, Argos, PC World, Currys and JJB
– to name but a few! The complex also has a range of
leisure activites such as a Cineworld 12-screen multiplex
cinema, a Gala Bingo Club, a private health and fitness
club and many restaurants and fast food outlets.

Get Up and Go
Swindon not only offers a great day out, but great nights
too. The town bustles with life throughout the year.
Keep the kids amused for hours at the Link & Oasis
Leisure Centres. The Oasis has a beach pool in a
tropical setting, with domebuster and water flumes,
a hydro slide, wave machine, a water cannon and an
indoor soft play area. The Link Centre has an ice rink
and a state of the art climbing wall, which has a variety of
different climbs.
Broome Manor Golf Complex has been voted one of
the best municipal courses in the UK and there are no
membership fees. The championship par 71 course
provides a challenge for all standards of golfer, while the
floodlit practice range is one of the best facilities in the
region.
The Delta Tennis Centre has 4 indoor and 3 outdoor
courts. Equipment is available to hire and tuition and
classes can be booked with trained professionals. The
Health Hydro in the town centre is a holistic health
facility together with Turkish Baths and swimming pools.
A natural health clinic offers a range of complementary
therapies and beauty treatments.
Lydiard Park is a delightful place to explore at any time of
the year. The many paths and trails through the woods
and by the lake offer glimpses of many birds and animals.
Rolling lawns and shady trees provide a wonderful
picnicking area in the summer, and in early spring the
woodlands are carpeted with snowdrops.
The Swindon City Festival is the town’s biggest
community festival. The streets of Swindon’s town
centre are animated by a dazzling array of professional
performers during mid July as part of the Swindon
Summer Festival’s Big Weekend.
The town also plays host to the Wiltshire Music Festival,
the weekend event features some of the biggest names
in both classical and pop. A feast of entertainments
continues with the annual Old Town Festival, Swindon
Summer Festival, the Forest Festival, World Festival and
many more.
The Wyvern Theatre and the Arts Centre offer a huge
choice of entertainment all year round including bands,
classical music, drama, comedy, professional and amateur
theatre.
Oasis Leisure Centre.
When it comes to night time entertainment, Swindon’s
got the lot! Choose between fabulous restaurants, a
great range of bars and some of the best nightclubs in
the South West. The Regent Circus area of the town
centre has some award-winning Indian Restaurants,
whilst Old Town offers a great choice of Mexican, Italian
and Chinese eateries. On the outskirts of town there
are some great eating places that offer a wide choice of
British and inspiring dishes, these include the Pear Tree at
Purton, the Three Crowns at Brinkworth and the Hare &
Hounds at Lambourn.
The Fleet Street area is bursting with pubs and bars,
these include the retro Lava Lounge, the very hip
Edwards, O’Neil’s, Yates Wine Bar, Broadwalk and Bar
Cuba.
Swindon’s reputation as a nightlife hotspot continues to
grow.
