HEAD COACH BETSY HAYDEN 

VIDEO 

Betsy Hayden enters her second season as the head coach at Millersville in 2009. During her first year, a 

young Millersville team showed tremendous improvement from start to finish. 

Hayden’s Marauders won six of their final eight matches in 2008 to finish 11-16 overall and 4-8 in the 

PSAC East. Millersville won three of its final four PSAC East matches, with the lone loss during that 

stretch coming to the eventual PSAC East champs, Lock Haven. 

Hayden brought to Millersville a knack for success, having built winning programs at the high school, 

community college and Division III levels. 

Prior to her appointment at Millersville, she served as the head coach at Wesley College during the 2007 

season. The program—in just its third year—experienced a quick turnaround under Hayden, posting a 

school record 11 victories and finishing with an 11-12 overall record.

Head Coach 

Hayden established herself as one of the top volleyball coaches in the small college ranks at Onondaga 

Community College where she amassed over 100 victories in just five years. In each of her seasons at 

the helm, Onondaga won or shared the regular season Mid-State Athletic Conference title and also won 

the conference tournament three times. 

In all five seasons, Hayden’s Onondaga program qualified for the NJCAA Region 3 Tournament, reaching 

regional finals three times and winning the region once. The region championship team finished the 

season fifth in the nation. During her stay at Onondaga, Hayden was the recipient of the NJCAA Region 

3 Coach of the Year award and was named Mid-State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. 

Hayden also coached winning volleyball, field hockey and softball programs at several high schools in 

New York. 

As a college athlete, Hayden was a key member of an Onondaga volleyball team that reached the 

NJCAA Women’s National Volleyball Championship and played on back-to-back National Softball 

Championship teams. 

Along with coaching, Hayden has worked as an official in volleyball, field hockey and softball. She holds 

an associate’s degree and an associate’s of applied science in recreation leadership from Onondaga 

Community College and a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Syracuse. She also earned a 

master’s degree in health education from SUNY Cortland. 

Hayden and her husband Tom have a son and two daughters.

ASSISTANT COACH BRIAN SMITH 

Brian Smith returns to his alma mater at the start of the 2009 season to serve as the Millersville volleyball 

team’s assistant coach. 

For the three years prior, Smith served as a coach with the LAVA club volleyball team and has been the club 

director for the last two years. Smith also has experience at the collegiate level as he spent the 2008 season as 

an assistant at Franklin & Marshall. 

In addition to his work at Franklin & Marshall and with LAVA, Smith has coached the junior varsity team at 

Lancaster Mennonite for three years. He is also a current board member in the Keystone Region and a USAV 

official. 

Millersville ‘87 

1st season at MU 

Smith gained playing experience during his time in the United States Marine Corps. From 1991-93, Smith was 

a member of the All-Marine Corps Volleyball Team. He also played at the USAV AA, A and B levels for 14 years. 

Smith graduated from Millersville in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in speech communications.

2009 SEASON OUTLOOK

The Millersville University women’s volleyball team experienced a year of transition 

in 2008. First-year head coach Betsy Hayden took over a thin roster and started to 

implement her philosophy. The team ebbed and flowed through the season, but 

finished on a tear, winning six of its last seven matches. Hayden returns for her 

second season in 2009, one which should feature a distinctly different look. The 

Marauders will have more depth across the board and are intent on making a return 

to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs for the first time since 

2005. 

The culmination of lacking depth and players playing out of their preferred positions 

relegated Millersville to an 11-16 overall record and a 4-8 mark in the PSAC in 

2008. Those issues look to be a thing of the past. The team loses Laura Navin, who 

led the team with 331 digs and was fourth in service aces (25), and Kathy Howard 

to graduation, but the Black and Gold should have a good blend of experience and 

youth in 2009, as a number of newcomers are expected to fight for roster positions. 

The Marauders will look to their two seniors, Meredith Sinback and Emily Bires, for 

leadership. Sinback, a setter and 2007 All-PSAC East Second Team selection, led the 

team in assists in 2008 with 450, while also ranking second in service aces (32) and 

digs (209), and fourth in kills (130). “Meredith has really embraced the role of being 

a leader and feels a sense of urgency to help this team get to where it belongs 

before she ends her collegiate career,” said Hayden. Bires, an outside-hitter and 

Lancaster County native, led the team with 236 kills last season. 

Sophomore Allison Huss recorded 100+ kills in 2008 and is expected to return and 

contribute this season. Huss is looking to build on a solid freshman season. She led 

the team and finished third in the PSAC in service aces, with 43, while also registering 

94 digs and 15 blocked shots. 

With an increase in team depth and numerous incoming players vying for spots on 

the roster, Hayden is hoping to create a competitive atmosphere that will pay dividends 

in an array of ways, most notably, wins. After overseeing successful programs 

at Onondaga Community College and Wesley College, the veteran head coach is set 

on changing the attitude and direction of yet another program. “We need to have 

that mentality that we’re never out of a match. At the same time, when we’re leading, 

we need to play to win instead of playing not to lose,” said Hayden. 

An improved mental toughness from this Marauder squad could be a key in turning 

some of last season’s close losses into wins this season. Millersville won a game 

or two in eight of its 16 losses and was 2-2 in matches that went five games. 

Inexperience also played a role in the Marauders struggles, as the team carried just 

four upperclassmen and 11 underclassmen. The squad ranked in the bottom half of 

the PSAC in hitting percentage, blocks, kills, and assists, and is focused on flipping 

those statistics around in 2009. 

Hayden is excited about the potential of incoming players making an immediate 

impact. Ami Killinger, a transfer from Edinboro, and Jill Toronchuk, a freshman who 

is coming all the way from the Pacific Northwest and the state of Washington, will 

provide versatility and the ability to play all over the court. Both are expected to 

step in and contribute right away. Corinne Marquess, another incoming freshman, 

is a high-energy player with great athleticism that Hayden thinks will help bolster 

the Marauders in 2009. 

While the increased depth and competitiveness of the squad should benefit the 

entire program, the road to the PSAC playoffs will be no easy task. 2008 PSAC East 

Champion Lock Haven is still the favorite. The Marauders proved they could play 

with the Lady Eagles, however, handing them their first game defeat in 2008, but 

eventually falling 3-1. Division foes West Chester and Shippensburg, both PSAC 

playoff qualifiers in 2008, should be strong again and provide a stiff challenge. 

Millersville starts the 2009 slate off with a trip to San Antonio, Texas, where it will 

play four matches, including two against teams (Metro State and Florida Southern) 

that qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division II Volleyball Tournament. The Marauders 

return home for their first home match of the season on September 5, when they 

will take on Wilmington (Del.), College of Saint Rose, and Bowie State in the Dutch 

County Spiketacular.

PSAC Overview 

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania 

State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded 

intercollegiate conferences. 

The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league 

reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years 

later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire 

conference to NCAA Division II. 

The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when 

the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members 

Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island 

University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and 

the one associate. 

All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of 

Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the 

NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference 

in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 

23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level.

Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine 

to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s 

success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. 

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of 

Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s 

estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining 

a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC 

Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. 

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools 

also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 

students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. 

The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a 

commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its 

headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

ATHLETIC TRADITION 

Millersville University was founded in 1855—then known as Lancaster Normal 

School. In 1889, Millersville started playing intercollegiate athletics, beginning a 

tradition of excellence and pride that is entering its 121st year. 

Since the first baseball team took the field, the athletics department has grown into 

22 teams competing at the NCAA Division I and II levels. Few universities can match 

the longstanding success that Millersville’s athletics programs have enjoyed. Since 

joining the PSAC, the Marauders have compiled 42 team PSAC Championships in 13 

different sports. 

The fan base and student-support of the Marauders is unrivaled among its peers. 

Packed venues are common, especially in Pucillo Gymnasium during basketball season, 

when the “Pucillo Posse”—a rowdy cheering section—helps the teams to victory. The 

students support all sports at Millersville. In 2008, the men’s soccer program ranked 

12th in the nation in home attendance. The spirit was no more 

evident than in late November when nearly 1,000 fans attended 

the team’s NCAA Tournament contest despite the freezing 

temperatures. 

Another key part of the tradition is Millersville’s mascots, the 

Marauder, and Skully. The Marauder’s origin dates back to 

the 1930s. He received a partner at Homecoming in 2004 in 

Skully. Skully has become a favorite among patrons with 

his eye patch, an earring, size 13 boots and enthusiasm 

for Millersville sports.
