Flushing issues are quite prevalent in healthcare facilities.
Wipes, washcloths, cloths, underpads, diapers – you
name it, it’s probably been flushed down a hospital
toilet. This causes huge headaches for facilities as
they try to address what can be a very expensive, not
to mention messy problem. Often, staff and patient
education is the key to preventing these issues.
The bad flushing behavior has to change.
Adding to the problem, many products marketed as
“flushable” claim to break down like toilet paper and
not clog toilets, sewers or septic systems. In reality, these
products often do not break down like toilet paper, and,
along with other non-flushable products, do end up
causing serious plumbing problems. Some areas have
even taken extra steps to address the problem.
Headlines from around the country
all have one common theme:
Flushing anything but toilet paper can be a strain on wastewater
systems. Some areas have taken strong action to combat what’s
become a serious problem.
• Portland, Maine
has installed a $4.5 million water screening facility after multiple
instances of wipes causing clogs at local pump stations. This may end
up costing residents in higher water rates.
• Raleigh, North Carolina
now says it’s illegal to flush so-called flushable wipes. An ordinance
states flushing anything besides toilet paper and human waste can
result in a $25,000 fine!
• Officials in Sitka, Alaska
have told residents not to flush so-called disposable wipes due to clogs
and other plumbing issues, saying workers have been too busy
untangling them from sewer machinery.

captured cloths themselves – or better yet, doesn’t flush
them at all. When cloths are caught, they’re easily
removed with our retrieval device for proper disposal.
