Change flushing behavior and effectively
prevent serious plumbing problems

Bad flushing behavior
A serious problem
Flushing issues are quite prevalent in healthcare facilities.
Wipes, washcloths, cloths, underpads, diapers – you
name it, it’s probably been flushed down a hospital
toilet. This causes huge headaches for facilities as
they try to address what can be a very expensive, not
to mention messy problem. Often, staff and patient
education is the key to preventing these issues.
The bad flushing behavior has to change.
Adding to the problem, many products marketed as
“flushable” claim to break down like toilet paper and
not clog toilets, sewers or septic systems. In reality, these
products often do not break down like toilet paper, and,
along with other non-flushable products, do end up
causing serious plumbing problems. Some areas have
even taken extra steps to address the problem.
Headlines from around the country
all have one common theme:
Flushing anything but toilet paper can be a strain on wastewater
systems. Some areas have taken strong action to combat what’s
become a serious problem.
• Portland, Maine
has installed a $4.5 million water screening facility after multiple
instances of wipes causing clogs at local pump stations. This may end
up costing residents in higher water rates.
• Raleigh, North Carolina
now says it’s illegal to flush so-called flushable wipes. An ordinance
states flushing anything besides toilet paper and human waste can
result in a $25,000 fine!
• Officials in Sitka, Alaska
have told residents not to flush so-called disposable wipes due to clogs
and other plumbing issues, saying workers have been too busy
untangling them from sewer machinery.

Retrieval hook makes it easy to remove cloths from toilet and properly dispose of them.
Traptex Flushing
Compliance Device
A simple solution to
a serious problem
Traptex eliminates the risk of foreign objects,
including Sage Comfort Bath ® washcloths, Comfort
Shield ® Barrier Cloths, and Sage ® 2 % CHG Cloths from
ending up in hospital and municipal wastewater systems.
Traptex uses small hooks to snag wipes and cloths,
holding them inside the bowl and serving as a visual
reminder for staff, patients and families not to flush
inappropriate items. It’s helping change bad flushing
behavior. When Traptex goes in, maintenance receives
fewer calls because nursing staff either removes the
captured cloths themselves – or better yet, doesn’t flush
them at all. When cloths are caught, they’re easily
removed with our retrieval device for proper disposal.
Traptex Features and Benefits
Traptex catches many types of disposable wipes and cloths
before they enter the main pipes.
• Small metal hooks prevent non-flushable cloths and foreign objects
from entering hospital and municipal plumbing system
“When I first saw Traptex, I was a bit skeptical and didn’t think it was going
to work. But once we installed it, we really saw that it did its job. Calls to us
started decreasing, we aren’t getting called off other projects to fix toilet
clogs, and the facility is saving money because we don’t need outside
companies to come in and fix major plumbing issues.”
Ivan Caraveo Plant Operations,
Ft. Worth, Texas
“It’s a great product. It’s a quick, easy process to install them,
and they do work. Plus it’s changing behavior when it
comes to flushing. Nurses don’t want to constantly have
to remove cloths or other items from the toilet after
Traptex catches them. It’s like a radar trap on the
freeway. Once you get caught, you won’t usually
do it again.”
Robert Michel Director of Materials Management
Ft. Worth, Texas
Traptex serves as a visual reminder not to flush cloths or other inappropriate objects.
