SPECIAL EDUCATION
This has been a very busy and interesting year for Special Education. In December 2011, AANDC offered
Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta funding to hire a Registered Psychologist. Heather Poluk was hired and began
her work at Treaty 8 in April 2012. A questionnaire sent to all Treaty 8 schools indicated approximately 144
Educational Assessments were outstanding. Thus began our planning and our visits to the schools. We spent
a very busy year visiting 12 Treaty 8 schools and working with some wonderful teachers, parents and students.
We are still finding challenges but also finding ways to work through them. We had the opportunity to work with
some students and teachers who were very determined to find the appropriate program for students. 2012 - 2013

To date, thirteen (13) schools have been visited by the Heather and Eileen. During these visits, pre and post
parental meetings, Educational Psychological assessments, teacher interviews, classroom observations and file
reviews have been conducted. To date, 38 Psycho-educational assessments and 14 achievement assessments
have been administered by Heather Poluk.

a. Behavior support plans (individual and school wide)
b. Providing counseling to school staff and students
c. Assisting in finding additional services in the community
d. Provide support and insight regarding health / medical needs of students (medical supplies for students
with exceptional needs)
e. Assisting community members who are seeking advice regarding issues beyond school (parents unhappy
with decisions made)
f. Providing support to teachers during parent teacher interviews
