THE TIMES FALL 2009 OF TREATY 8’S CHILDREN’S AGENDA “I believe that Sturgeon Lake is exactly where we are supposed to be.” It doesn‟t take much conversation to understand that Ryk David is confident in what he‟s doing. Confidence is one of his most obvious virtues, and it appears to be serving him and Children‟s Agenda well. “I‟m hoping to help the whole entire nation itself become a better nation,” beamed David after being asked for his take on the grand scheme of his work. David showed up at the latest CPAC meeting with a binder full of what he‟s working on at Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. Sturgeon Lake is one of three Best Practice Sites currently pushing forward with the Children‟s Agenda. “We are quite excited about the work that is happening with our Best Practice Sites.” said Children‟s Agenda Manager Ann Nipshank, adding that the work being done in both Dene Tha‟ and at the Lesser Slave Lake Indian Regional Council is also encouraging. As for Ryk David he says his next step is to get his Nation‟s leaders and members to give his proposals the thumbs up. “It‟s just a matter now of getting leadership on-board, getting their support, and then following it through and amend and tweak those plans as we continue to move ahead.” In one of our most efficient and well-attended meetings in recent memory 20 CPAC (Children‟s Program Advisory Committee) members, staff, and observers came together on September 15th to discuss where we‟re at and where we need to go with Children‟s Agenda. “I believe that this project has a lot of work still to do but a lot has been done within the last few months.” concluded CPAC member and meeting Chair Erica Jagodzinsky. Presentations were delivered by Children‟s Agenda staff including an update of each Best Practice Site. “It helps us as CPAC members to be able to feel that we are involved and making a difference.” said Jagodzinsky after the meeting, which took less than 4 hours. The next CPAC meeting has been set for December 3rd 2009, 9:30am, at the T8FNA Edmonton office. Details are now available at treaty8.ca.

OF TREATY 8’S CHILDREN’S AGENDA
“I believe that Sturgeon Lake is exactly
where we are supposed to be.”
It doesn‟t take much conversation
to understand that Ryk David is
confident in what he‟s doing. Confidence
is one of his most obvious
virtues, and it appears to be serving
him and Children‟s Agenda
“I‟m hoping to help the whole entire
beamed David after being asked for
his take on the grand scheme of his
work.
David showed up at the latest
CPAC meeting with a binder full of
what he‟s working on at Sturgeon
Sturgeon Lake is one of three Best
“We are quite excited about the work
THE TIMES
It‟s an important first for the Children‟s Agenda. We
are now on the web.
As of mid September anyone can access information
about our program from anywhere in the world. All
they have to do is log-on to treaty8.ca and follow the
links.
While treaty8.ca has been up and running for years ,
this is the first time that Children‟s Agenda has had
it‟s own page.
You‟ll be able to find newsletters, photos, event listing,
and contact information.
“The plan is to add content as it
becomes available. Right now we have the basic
skeleton created and we‟ll keep adding all of the
bells and whistles to make it current, exciting and
interactive.” says Communications Liaison and web
editor Sean Amato. “We recognize the importance
of keeping with the times as technology continues to
become more and more important especially in our
more isolated communities. It‟s a very important
part of keeping everyone in the loop with what we
are doing.”
It‟s true our staff spends the majority of our time in the office,
but we‟ve never been shy about getting out and lending a hand
for events that are important to Treaty 8 (see above pictures).
In recent months our staff has played a critical role in offering
on-site support for some of the biggest gatherings, all the
while spreading the Children‟s Agenda message.
Our staff has recently lent a hand at: 2009 Treaty 8 Honoring
our Treaty Gathering and AGM, Alberta FN Consultations
Workshop, Fall „09 Assembly of Treaty Chiefs, and National
Treaties 1-11 Gathering, just to name a few.
“It‟s important to attend Treaty 8 events, not only as an observer
but as a volunteer” says Best Practice Technician Cara
Laboucane “This shows to others that al staff of Treaty 8 are
united in spirit.”
At this year‟s Honoring our Treaty Gathering, our staff made a
splash by handing out hundred‟s of newsletters, pamphlets,
and promotional material. Thanks to all who were interested!
