The Park Board meets on the fourth Thursday 

of each month (unless otherwise posted) at 

7:00 pm at the Community Center, 

255 Briargate Road. All are welcome to

Dear Residents, 

At the most recent Illinois Association of Park Districts 

and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association state 

conference, the Cary Park District received the Distinguished 

Accreditation Award. This prestigious award is 

in recognition of the Board and Staff’s commitment to 

providing quality facilities, programs, and services to 

residents. 

Also honored at the state conference was Commissioner 

Mike Renner with the Mike Cassidy Commissioner 

Community Service Award. Commissioner Renner was 

chosen as the recipient of this award for demonstrating 

tireless assistance and leadership through contribution 

of time, service, and volunteer efforts to the community. 

My time as a commissioner on the Park Board is coming 

to an end and I am honored to have served you. When 

I started serving on the Board, the Park District had just 

completed it’s Comprehensive Master Plan. I am proud 

of everything that the District has accomplished since 

that time and here are a few highlights:

- Cary-Algonquin Road Trail Development 

- Hoffman Park Trail Improvements 

- Hoffman Park Phase 1 Development: including a

With the Master Plan as our guide, I am confident 

that you will see more park developments and 

improvements in the future. 

In addition to park and facility improvements, we will 

be offering additional amenities in several of our recreational 

programs. New this year, the pool will open 

a week earlier on May 25. Have your purchased your 

Chilly Willy Pass? Don’t miss out on your ticket to the 

pool this summer. Not only will you receive a discount 

off the pool pass rate, you will be able to participate 

in our Member Sundays allowing you to swim an hour 

earlier than the general admission. 

Don’t forget about the hundreds of recreational 

programs, camps, lessons, and events this summer. 

Or simply enjoy a family outing or picnic at one of the 

Districts many parks.

CDGA Handicap System 

Foxford Hills Golf Club offers golfers a handicap service 

through the CDGA. A handicap may be purchased for $35 

for Cary Park District residents and $40 for non-residents. 

Permanent Tee Times for 2013 

It is time to start thinking about your 2013 permanent tee 

time at Foxford Hills. Permanent tee times are available 

from 6:00 am to 8:30 am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. 

Tee times are booked on a first-come, first-served 

basis. There is a $100 non-refundable deposit for each 

member of the group. Twosomes and threesomes are welcome. 

Permanent tee times holders receive a special rate. 

Residents $60 / Non-Residents $70. Visit the golf shop today 

to pick-up a permanent tee time packet. 

Tee Time Reservations 

Tee times may be made thirty (30) days in advance with a 

major credit card. MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American 

Express are accepted. 

Dress Code 

Attire must be in keeping with the standards of the sport. 

Attire not permitted includes, but is not limited to, bathing 

suits, cutoffs, and sandals. Foxford Hills Golf Club is a nonmetal 

or soft spike facility. 

Pace of Play 

Players are to maintain the pace of play guidelines established 

by the Club. The average pace of play at Foxford 

Hills Golf Club is 4 hours 30 minutes.

a club atmosphere that is perfect for groups of up to 

75 guests. Whether you select buffet style, family style or a 

custom package, our staff will do all the work so you can 

enjoy your day. Possible events include rehearsal dinners, 

showers, breakfasts, luncheons, casual dinners, business 

meetings, corporate events and golf outings.

6-Day Junior Golf Clinic 

Ages 4 - 14 years 

The Junior Golf Clinic has been formatted into a six-day program where juniors 

learn the basic fundamentals of the golf swing, putting, irons, driving the ball, 

and basic golf course etiquette. If you have a question about which level your 

junior should be placed in, please set up a time to have our golf professional 

assess your child. Classes missed will not be given credit for private instruction.

Community Gardens 

Community Gardens 

at Hoffman park 

If your yard is too small or shady or if you are unable 

to garden where you live, the Hoffman Park 

Community Gardens is the perfect place to grow 

your own vegetables, fruits, herbs, plants, and flowers. 

Rent a 20 x 30 foot plot at Hoffman Park and 

enjoy the fresh outdoors, garden next to neighbors, 

and take home a bountiful harvest for yourself or 

your family.

Rentals 

Rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis. 

To rent, please complete a registration form found on 

page 60 of this brochure and return it with payment to 

the Community Center. Renters will be notified of their 

plot number and additional information. 

Water 

Water is supplied from a hand pump well. There is not a 

hose or hose hook up provided on site. Garden tenders will 

need to bring their own bucket or watering can and may 

fill up their buckets or cans from the pump to water their 

garden plots. 

Guidelines for Use 

1. Garden plots may not be planted with illegal or banned 

plants. Tall crops should be planted in a manner to prevent 

the shading of other plots. 

2. Gardeners may use only Park District approved stakes, 

fencing, or trellises. 

3. Each gardener is responsible for the maintenance and 

upkeep of their garden plot. Watering, weeding, harvesting, 

removing trash, and any other garden-related maintenance 

are the responsibility of the gardener. Weeds should not be 

allowed to grow higher than 12 inches. Use of power 

equipment to maintain your plot is prohibited. 

4. Garden plots should be cared for at least once a week. 

If any plot remains unattended (weeds higher than 12 

inches) for more than 3 weeks a notice (phone call, 

letter, or e-mail) will be provided to the gardener stating 

that the plot will be cleared and potentially reassigned 

if the gardener fails to provide corrective maintenance 

within 1 week of the notice date. 

5. The application of herbicides and insecticides to garden 

plots is prohibited. Gardeners may apply only Park District 

approved fertilizer or compost. Violation of this rule may 

result in loss of gardening privileges. 

6. Gardeners may maintain or harvest vegetables or flowers 

from their plots only. 

7. At the end of the growing season, gardeners are responsible 

for clearing their plots of all plant material and leaving the 

space as they found it in the spring. 

8. Children and guests are welcome in the garden, but must 

be accompanied by the registered gardener. The gardener 

is responsible for the actions of all children or guests while 

visiting the community gardens. Pets are not allowed in the 

garden plots. 

9. The Cary Park District is not responsible for: garden plot 

maintenance (watering, weeding, plant care, etc.), plot 

monitoring and security, actions of other gardeners or park 

users, damage, vandalism, or theft of plot plantings, stakes, 

fencing or tools.

and muscle strength/endurance. The trainer will discuss 

the results with you. 

A fitness assessment is required before signing up for a 

personal training session.

Pool Guidelines 

• Everyone entering the pool must pay a daily fee or have a 

season pass. If your season pool pass is lost or stolen, there 

is a replacement fee of $10. 

• Children 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult 

18 years or older. 

• Non-swimmers 6 and under must be accompanied in the 

water by an adult 18 years or older. 

• The pool will close if severe weather conditions are issued. 

If the pool closes due to weather, a half-hour interval will 

be used to determine if the pool reopens. Patrons will have 

to leave the premises during this waiting period. If the pool 

cannot open by 6:00 pm, it will remain closed for the 

evening. 

• Approved swim wear only in the pool. No cutoffs. 

• Infant chair float devices will be allowed in the tot pool 

only. Parents must remain in close proximity to the child. 

• Children in diapers must wear approved “swim” diapers 

covered with plastic pants. 

• Individuals with open sores or contagious diseases are not 

permitted to swim. Staff reserves right of judgment should 

a questionable condition occur. 

• Food, beverages and coolers are limited to the 

concession area and may not be brought onto the pool 

deck. 

• The Cary Park District is not responsible for loss or theft of 

personal belongings. 

• All other state and local health laws apply. 

• Pool privileges may be removed or suspended if rules, 

guidelines or laws are violated or unacceptable behavior 

is exhibited.

Scout Aquatics Testing 

Ages 6 years & older 

Does your Girl Scout or Boy Scout need to pass an aquatic 

test to go to camp or earn an award? Just bring in the requirements 

that they need to perform, and our aquatics 

staff can evaluate them. The scout must come in ready 

to try to perform the skills, as it is an evaluation and not a 

swimming lesson. Tests will be given to either individuals or 

groups. An adult must be present during the evaluation.

Lifeguarding

The program provides entry-level lifeguard candidates with 

the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent, recognize, 

and respond to emergencies and to provide care for injuries 

and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel 

arrive. This program includes a lifeguard training course 

with aquatic-specific first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation 

(CPR) training. This is a certification course. Prerequisites 

include: swimming 300 yards (12 laps) without stopping, 

swimming 12 yards and then retrieving a 10 pound 

object from 6 feet of water or deeper and treading water 

for 2 minutes. If you do not pass these pre-requisites the first 

day, you will not be able to continue with the class. It is 

recommended to bring two suits and towels to each class. 

Students may often be going into the water twice each 

session with a lunch break in between.

Swim Lessons 

Swim Lesson Program General Information 

All courses will be taught by certified American Red Cross 

Learn to Swim Program (A.R.C.) Water Safety Instructors and 

Lifeguards. Swimmer attendance is important in order to 

ensure proper skill development and level advancement. 

On the first day of each session a brief orientation will be 

held for the parents with children in the program. Discussion 

of the lesson plans and rain dates will occur. The lesson 

coordinator will also be available to answer questions. 

Swim Lesson Rules 

• Parents will not be allowed on the pool deck during 

swim lessons. We ask that all parents/guardians remain 

in the concession area and/or upper deck except on 

the days designated in the parent letter. 

• Picture/video taking will not be allowed during swim 

lessons. However, every Thursday, the last 15 minutes 

of lessons will be reserved for parents to observe and 

take pictures of their child’s progress.

Level 1 - Water Exploration 

Ages 3 - 5 

Swimmers learn to feel comfortable and enjoy the water 

while learning water adjustment in a group setting. Supported 

floating on the front and back, supported kicking 

on the front and back, underwater skills, and water 

safety skills will be taught. Required skills: Willingness to get 

in the pool and put face in the water without a parent.

Level 2 - Primary Skills 

Ages 4 years older 

Enrolled swimmers must be comfortable in the water without 

a parent and have completed Level 1 or equivalent. 

Swimmers learn to retrieve objects under water, float and 

glide on the front and back, combine strokes using kick 

and alternating arm actions, 5 yards and deep water orientation 

with support. Required skills: Level 1 skills, bubbles 

with nose, comfortable being on front and back in water. 


Level 3 - Stroke Readiness 


Level 3 builds on skills by coordinating strokes and increasing 

endurance. Swimmers will learn to coordinate front 

and back crawl for 10 yards, learn the basics of backstroke, 

and backstroke kick for 10 yards, and learn to tread 

water. Required skills: Level 2 skills, front and back crawl. 


Level 4 - Stroke Development 


Level 4 develops endurance in strokes learned and introduces 

the breaststroke and sidestroke. Swimmers will learn 

elementary backstroke (10 yards), front and back crawl 

(25 yards), breaststroke kick (10 yards), scissors kick (10 

yards) plus learn breaststroke, sidestroke, treading water 

for 2 minutes, and standing front dive. Required skills: Level 

3 skills, breast and side strokes. Max: 16/session 

Level 5 - Stroke Refinement 


Level 5 refines coordination and increases endurance 

of key strokes. Swimmers will learn the breaststroke (10 

yards), elementary backstroke (25 yards), front crawl (50 

yards), backstroke (50 yards), and the introduction to the 

butterfly stroke. Required skills: level 4 skills and all strokes. 

Max: 2-5 per session 

Level 6 - Stroke Proficiency 


Level 6 polishes strokes so swimmers perform them with 

more ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over 

greater distances. Swimmers will learn the butterfly (10 

yards), sidestroke (25 yards), breaststroke (50 yards), 

backstroke (100 yards), front crawl (100 yards) and 

turns. Required skills: Level 5 skills and refined strokes. 

Max: Semi-private, 2-5 per instructor. Level 6 meets for one

Less Pollution is the Solution 

The Cary Park District has embraced greenness 

for many years and has recently stepped 

up efforts with the implementation of three 

propane vehicles. Three 2012 Ford F-350 

trucks - two pickups and one dump truck - 

were purchased to replace ageing vehicles in 

the fleet. With the conversion kits, these daily 

use vehicles are now powered by propane. 

A propane station for fueling was installed at 

the Park Maintenance garage as part of the 

move to this alternative fuel. Incentives exist 

for moving in this direction and the District 

took advantage of every offer by the state for 

the purchase and conversion rebates. 

The approach to a cleaner, greener way of 

operating has many rewards including the 

burning of cleaner and considerably less 

expensive fuels. Now you have the satisfaction 

of knowing your Park District is using a 

cleaner fuel and lessening the dependence on 

foreign oil. Since propane burns cleaner, oil 

changes are needed less often. 

Look for the ‘Propane Powered’ logo on these 

vehicles as part of our Less Pollution is the 

Solution promise to you. Watch for these propane 

powered vehicles in your neighborhood 

parks and at your community facilities.

Sunshine Camp

is set in the lush greenery and woods of Lions Park which

Extend Your Kindergartner’s Day! 

Are you looking to enhance your kindergartner’s day? 

Your child will be engaged through art, music, fine and

project approach will be utilized through finding out

in learning, and gathering information to master 

the subject matter.

Lions Park Picnic Shelters 

Two shelters are available for rent from dawn 

to dusk between the first weekend in May and 

the end of September. Each shelter has a solid 

roof, picnic tables, garbage cans, and electric. 

Portable washroom facilities are located within 

the park. 

The Community Center offers eight rooms that can accommodate 

small-to-medium-sized groups. A warm and welcoming environment 

along with friendly staff set the stage for any event. Additional amenities 

including a kitchen, PA system, and AV rental are also available. 

The Community Center also offers free Wi-Fi. 

Hickory Room

The Hickory Room can accommodate

Keyboard Fun

while enjoying the unique sounds of digital keyboards. As 

students progress, they will learn chords, build sight-reading 

skills, and have fun playing pop, blues, jazz and classical 

music with an emphasis on students learning to play their

memory that leads to better success in school. Keyboards 

are provided for classroom use.

members. The survey focused on members overall experience with the park and 

with their membership. A total of 146 (41.5%) surveys were completed. Below are

2. Click on the Rapid Reg icon

4. Enter your LOGIN and PIN. 

5. Click on the ‘Programs’ tab. 

6. Search for a program that you want. You may 

search by the bar code that is listed in the brochure, 

by category, or by using the advanced search. 

7. Once you find the course you are interested in, 

select ‘Show Courses’ to view information about the 

course including date, time, location, program 

description, fee, and enrollment. 

8. If you would like to register for a particular program, 

select the ‘Register’ button. 

9. Using the ‘Family Member’ dropdown box, select the 

family member from the list that you want to register. 

10. You may either select ‘Continue Shopping’ for 

additional programs and repeat steps 4 – 7 or you 

may select ‘Go to Checkout’. 

11. When you have finished making all your selections, 

select the ‘Go to Checkout’ button. 

12. On the Check Out screen, verify your selections then 

select ‘Save and Go To Checkout’. 

13. On the Check Out page, enter your payment 

information and select ‘Complete Transaction to 

submit your registration and payment. At this point you 

will be asked to agree or disagree with the program

Camp ECHO 

Grades K-5th 

Camp ECHO is exploding with non-stop action and excitement 

for the summer of 2013. 

Mondays and Tuesdays are activity days where campers 

will rotate through many different activity stations that keep 

them involved and moving. The activity stations may include 

art/crafts, woodworking, theater, dance, science/ 

exploration, team building/leadership, sports/games, and 

outdoor activities (archery, fishing, hiking, and scavenger/ 

treasure hunts). 

Campers will swim every Wednesday and Friday at the Cary 

Park District Pool (except on parent days) and attend either 

an off-site or on-site field trip every Thursday. 

ECHO Extreme 

Grades 6th-8th 

Take all of the non-stop action and excitement from Camp 

ECHO and kick it up a notch. Campers will gain independence, 

learn leadership skills, and explore the world around 

them. Some camp days may include off-site activities. 

ECHO Extreme campers will participate in many activities 

such as hiking, fishing, archery, fort building and more. 

Each week campers will swim at the Park District pool and 

on Thursday will take a field trip. On Parent Days, ECHO Extreme 

will put those leadership skills to good use by helping 

out with the special event. Don’t miss out on the summer 

you will remember for a long time!

Princess Time 

If dancing and being a princess is your little girl’s favorite

Lyrical 

Combine elements of ballet, modern, and jazz dance techniques 

and set it to popular music. Learn to use gestures, 

facial expressions, and controlled movements to emotionally 

connect to the music. 

Beginner Jazz 

Jazz, a contemporary form of dance, is commonly used in 

Broadway shows and movies. Learn basic jazz terminology, 

center floor work, across-the-floor combinations, and basic 

turns and leaps. 

Street Jazz 

Jazz is a contemporary form of dance and is commonly

Dance Program Information 

The Cary Park District dance program is focused on fun, concentration, 

and dedication. Students will gain new friendships, 

increase confidence, and be creative. Dancing is a great 

way for children to exercise; increase flexibility, strength, and 

endurance, and develop a sense of well-being. 

Children should wear comfortable shoes to the first meeting. 

Instructors will inform you of shoe type at that time. Please 

note: all dancers, except those in the 2-year-old programs, 

must be potty trained before the start of the program. Thank 

you for your cooperation. 

Parent Watch Dates 

The parent watch date is the last day of each session. Parents 

are invited to attend and watch the entire class. Instructors 

always welcome the opportunity to discuss dancer’s progress

Anniversary Book Discussion and Tea Party 

Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Jane Austen’s, 

Pride & Prejudice with an interactive book review 

which includes costumes and insights into the life and 

times of author Jane Austen. Her most popular novel 

is the story of the dangers of forming false first impressions. 

The Victorian Rose Bed and Breakfast in Algonquin 

will host this event with lunch of finger sandwiches, 

sweet “dainties” and hot tea. Participants are invited 

to borrow a copy of Pride & Prejudice from the Kraus 

Senior Center for advance reading. A viewing of the 

movie will also be scheduled prior to the event date.

Registration Information 

Age Appropriate: 

Ages and/or grades are listed with programs as guidelines 

for age-specific ability. The younger the participant, the 

more this guideline must be followed to ensure safety, enjoyment, 

and accomplishment. A birth certificate may be 

requested if doubt occurs concerning a participant’s age. 

Behavior: 

Although the Park District realizes that inappropriate behavior 

may occur, the Park District reserves the right to suspend 

or remove participants from programs or facilities if hazardous, 

disruptive, and/or destructive behavior persists. If a participant 

is taken out of a program or removed from a facility 

due to these circumstances, a prorated refund will be issued 

for the remainder of the program or facility usage. 

Minimum/Maximum: 

A minimum and maximum number of participants is set for 

each program. This is to ensure the best possible experience 

for each participant. The Park District may increase or reduce 

program size if necessary. 

Say Cheese! 

Photographs and videos are taken of participants to use 

for promotional purposes. By registering for a program, you 

have granted the Park District permission to use your image 

for promotional purposes unless otherwise stated. 

In Case of Oops! 

During the course of Park District programs, there can be 

unforeseen circumstances that force the Park District to 

change schedules, instructors, combine or postpone programs, 

adjust facility usage or modify fees. The Park District 

makes every effort to ensure that the information presented 

in this brochure is complete and accurate; however, sometimes 

errors do occur and we apologize in advance for any 

inconvenience this may cause. 

Insurance: 

The Park District does not carry medical or accident insurance 

for program or facility participants. The cost would 

make program fees prohibitive. Please review your own 

personal health insurance plan to be certain that you and 

your family have the proper coverage. 

Policies, Procedures and Guidelines: 

Additional Park District policies, procedures and guidelines 

are available for review at the Cary Park District Community 

Center. 

A Note of Thanks: 

Thank you to School Districts 155, 26 and 3 for providing facilities 

in which to hold recreational programs; to Park District 

Commissioners, volunteers, and staff who devote so much 

of their time; and to you, the community, for your continued 

support. 

Fees: 

Resident/Non-resident - The first program fees listed in the 

brochure are for Cary Park District residents. Non-resident 

(NR) fees are listed second and are the higher rate of the 

two. Residents support the Park District through tax dollars, 

while non-residents pay to participate through higher registration 

fees. All account balances must be paid in full before 

registering for new programs. 

Fair Share - Those desiring to achieve resident status may 

pay their “fair share” of taxes based on the taxable value 

of their home. This annual payment entitles an individual 

to pay in-district fees for all Park District programs, tuition, 

passes, etc. and to register for programs at the same time 

as residents. 

The taxable value of a property is stated clearly on the tax 

bill. Fair share in not necessarily for everyone. This has to be 

determined by you, taking into consideration the frequency 

of Park District use and the value of your home. 

Call the Community Center at 847-639-6100 to find out if this 

is for you. If you don’t have a copy of your current tax bill, 

call your taxing township for your home’s taxable value. 

Waiver of Fees - A Waiver of Fees program is available to 

provide assistance to residents with financial hardship. Confidential 

application may be made to the Superintendent 

of Recreation. Personal financial records may be requested 

to verify need. 

ADA: 

The Cary Park District complies with the Americans with 

Disabilities Act (ADA), which prohibits discrimination in the 

provision of programs, services or activities to individuals 

with disabilities. The Park District invites any resident with a 

special need to contact us, or the Northern Illinois Special 

Recreation Association staff, upon registration, to ensure a 

smooth inclusion. 

In addition to the programs listed within our brochure, the 

Park District also provides specialized services for people 

with disabilities through the Northern Illinois Special 

Recreation Association (NISRA). Feel free to call NISRA at

more information.

Resident registration begins April 15. 

Non-resident registration begins April 22. 

All registration will begin at 7:00 am on the dates listed 

above. To accommodate any questions that may arise during 

online registration, additional staff will be available to 

assist. Any registration submitted prior to the registration start 

dates will not be accepted and will be returned.

Rapid Reg, the quick and easy online registration system is 

now available. This form of registration requires you to 

submit credit card payment and is also in “real time”; you 

will know immediately that you have been accepted into 

a class or program. Some programs are not available for 

online registration, but included for display purposes only.

The Park District does not accept phone registrations. 

Payment Accepted 

The Cary Park District accepts checks (payable to Cary Park 

District), cash, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. American 

Express is accepted with Rapid Reg only. Do not pay with 

cash if mailing or dropping your registration in the drop box. 

Receipts will be issued upon registration at the Community 

Center for cash payment validation. 

Residency Checks 

Any registrations with payment in cash or by credit 

card, and no previous account history, are subject 

to having residency checked with a printed form 

of proof such as a driver’s license, utility bill, etc. Also, 

addresses on checks that do not match addresses on 

registration forms will be subject to a residency check. Individual 

families should register on one form. Multiple families 

listed on one form will prevent your registration from being 

processed. 

Registration Confirmation 

A registration confirmation will be provided only when a registration 

has not been granted (i.e., wait list). In this instance, 

a confirmation will be issued to confirm the status of these 

registrations. 

Therefore, presume you are registered for a program unless 

you are notified otherwise by the Park District. Questions can 

be directed to 847-639-6100 ext. 0. 

Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy 

The Cary Park District guarantees your satisfaction with the 

recreation programs and activities in which you participate. 

If you are not completely satisfied for any reason, please 

let us know. You will be able to choose one of the following 

options: 

1. Repeat the program at no charge. 

2. Receive full credit that can be applied 

to another program. 

3. Receive a full refund. 

Withdrawal Guidelines: 

Cary Park District reserves the right to cancel any program 

with insufficient enrollment. 

All refund requests must be made on a Cary Park District 

withdrawal form and submitted to the Cary Park District 

office and not with the program instructor. All refund/withdrawal 

requests will be assessed a $5 service charge. If the 

second meeting of a program has passed, withdrawal requests 

will be considered on a prorated basis in addition 

to the $5 service charge. Refunds will not be issued after 

the third class meeting. Refer to withdrawal form for refund 

options. 

Refunds will not be issued for one-day programs or events, 

sports leagues, tournaments or tickets to sports/entertainment/events 

or deposits for programs. Memberships, pool 

passes, Preschool, and E.T. KidZone withdrawals will be 

evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may require support 

documentation.

Warning of Risk: Recreational activities/programs are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental, and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, 

medical advice, conditioning, and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity/program. Understandably, not all hazards and dangers can be foreseen. Depending
