Dear Members,
It is with great pleasure that I accept
the office of President of our club
even though I didn’t plan on it happening
quite this soon. I would like to
thank Joe Minotti for all he has contributed
and for the many hours he
spent to make this club better. Although
Joe has left his office he will
still be a very important part of our
club’s operations. He has vowed his
complete support to me and the
entire board.
One of my goals will be to double the attendance on Tuesday
evenings in our dining room, the bar and our monthly socials. But my
main goal is to bring back harmony to our club. We are a social club –
a family club and we need to respect one another.
We have made many changes to our menus and lowered the prices on
some of our meals on Tuesday, Fridays and our monthly socials, hoping
that the attendance will greatly increase. Please support our club.
Our Festa was a great success this year thanks to the great
effort put forth by Chairpersons Virginia Esposito. Carol Minotti and the
entire group of captains and volunteers. As you know, Festa is a very
important part of our heritage.
Congratulations to my new appointees pro tem, vicepresident,
Lois Big Mountain and Director Sal Gulotto. As per our
by-laws, we will have nominations in November and elections in January
since we do not have a meeting in December.
Our entire membership mourns the passing of one of our long
time volunteers, Jan Mercante. She will be missed by all.
Also with the holidays coming up we will have a new procedure for all
member benefit food orders. The order will be given to our Secretary
Barbara on Monday. She will give the order to the chef. No one is to
go into the kitchen. The chef will price the order and it can be picked
up on Thursday or Friday. You give your check to Barbara and she will
get your order. All this depends if we have your product in stock or
must be ordered.
Please make every attempt to read our newsletter especially
this month where we have made many changes in food choices and
price changes.
In closing I feel very honored to be your president and look
forward to your attendance at our club functions. I am hoping that I
have the support of all our members.
Wishing everyone a healthy and happy Thanksgiving and God

Election Notice
In accordance with the by-laws, an election to fill the unexpired terms for the office of Vice-President and the position of Director
will be held on January 19, 2011, just prior to the General Meeting. The Vice-President's term will end on May 31, 2011; the
Director's term on May 31, 2012. Nominations for these positions will be accepted at the November 17, 2010 General Meeting.
To qualify for nomination, candidates must:
a) be a regular member for at least one year
b) have current dues and all assessments paid
c) have attended three (3) of the last seven (7) meetings.
Any member fulfilling these conditions may notify me or any member of the Election Committee if he or she would like to be nominated
at the November General Meeting. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at that time.

Month of October Highlights
Board Meeting –October 14, 2010
General Information and Committee Reports
Marie Galluccio will be collecting dues on Tuesday, November 1 st. .
Heritage Chairperson, Jane Aulicino will present La Boheme on Friday, November 12 th at the Club. On Sunday, January
16 th there will be a get together of other neighboring Italian Clubs Time will be between 2 and 5 PM. It is called Pronzo con
amici, (Get together with Friends).
Carnivale will be sometime in February.
Bingo-John LaCorte will be repairing chairs. Suggestion to Scotchguard the chairs was approved.
Volunteer Coordinator – Marie Woodward has been speaking to potential volunteers on a one to one basis.
It has been working out very well.
ATM machine was installed by Pete DeGuilio.
The motion detectors have been moved so there will be 360-degree security.
President Minotti will be stepping down on October 20 th , 2010. Thanked all the volunteers and members of his Board.
General Meeting – October 20, 2010
Member Joe Abitante gave the Invocation with the Pledge of Allegiance following.
President Minotti announced his resignation and gave the podium to the new President Pat Lacorte.
Pres. Pat Lacorte advised although Joe was leaving as President he would still be an important part of the
Club’s operations. The new President will be available daily 9am to Noon to anyone who has concerns.
Membership Marie: Galluccio reported 21 new members.
Treasurer Tomme Mayne reported a surplus of $4526.00. We are on budget and looking good for the year.
Pres. Pat LaCorte appointed Lois Big Mountain as Vice President, and Sal Gulotta as a Director. Nomination
for these positions will be accepted Nov. 17, 2010 at the General Meeting. The President announced that
Eugene Tontodonato will be the Parliamentarian.
The By-law changes submitted by Director Maresco and voted on by the members present at the meeting will
be in La Voce Forte.
Virginia Esposito announced that Festa netted approximately $10,000.00. Thanked all the volunteers especially
Tom (Woody Woodward and Check Pizer who worked all weekend, Pete and Connie DeGuilio , the LaCortes
plus many others who worked all weekend. (Not enough space to mention all.)
The President announced that the bereavement luncheon for our beloved member Jan Mercante was a beautiful
tribute to her and she will be missed.
New procedure for ordering food. Barbara in the office will take your order on Monday, submit it to the Chef for
pricing and it can be picked up on Thursday. Give your check to Barbara.

State apologizes for mistreatment of Italian residents during
WWII
I believe many of you will find this interesting. Most of us are only aware of the internment of Japanese
Americans and Japanese aliens and of the restrictions placed on their movement and location of residence. The
same occurred to Italian and German Americans and aliens. At the beginning of World War II, there were
600,000 Italian aliens in the United States. All of them, at the declaration of war by Benito Mussolini, became
enemy aliens. Unlike the Japanese, the number of Italians was overwhelming. What was the government going
to do, intern them all? That was out of the question. The government developed a criterion of elimination to seek
out those who were a threat to the U.S. and intern them. This was an awesome task, and injustices were going to
occur. All Italian aliens had to register within four months of the declaration of war at official registration locations.
Nevertheless, thousands of Italians came under various restrictions, if their livelihood involved using a
boat they had to leave it, sell it or have it impounded by the government. They were required to move away
from the coast. They were required to turn in to the local police such things as radios, telephones and flashlights.
They were subjected to surprise house searches. These usually occurred at night after 11:00 p.m. If the
officials found any of those items they were confiscated, and the violator faced a hearing before a civilian tribunal.
The tribunals had the power to intern. Many had curfews imposed them and had to be at home by 8:00 p.m.
These things were done whether a spouse was American or not and even if their children were American. The
famous Joe DiMaggio’s parents could no longer work their fishing boat and had to move five miles inland from
the coast. The government officials seized and impounded their boat for the duration of the war. The number of
Italian aliens interned was 228. Here on the East coast, they were sent to Ellis Island for processing and then
every three or four months were moved from military base to military base throughout the U.S. They most often
ended up at Fort Missoula, Montana. Fort Missoula held one thousand Italian citizens and six hundred and fifty
Japanese citizen internees besides Italian aliens.
On Monday, Oct 12, 1942, Attorney General Biddle, during a Columbus Day speech at Carnegie Hall,
issued a proclamation ending wartime restrictions against Italians. He stated, “Italians will not be considered
enemy aliens after October 19, 1942. We have carefully checked the 600,000 Italian aliens and there has been
cause to intern only 228 of them.” He further announced on the radio, “I will recommend a bill to Congress that
will grant to any alien, who is eligible for citizenship without taking the literacy test provided he or she is fifty
years old or older and came to the United States before July 1, 1942, and has been living in the country continuously
since then.” The Germans and the Japanese did not fare so well for those two countries remained at war
with the U.S. until conquered in 1945.
In light of the above, Mike Maiorana, a boy during WW II, clearly remembered when officials came to
his house in Monterey, Ca. and searched, more than once, for guns, flashlights, cameras, shortwave radios and
anything else that could be used to signal the enemy. His father was a naturalized citizen, and yet was forced to
move from Monterey to Salinas and lose his livelihood by having his fishing boat confiscated.
Chet Campanella, who experienced similar disenfranchisement, entered an annual, “There ought to be
law,” contest and cited, “The treatment of Italians in California was horrible and there wasn’t one tiny bit of evidence
to indicate that any Italians were responsible for any type of spying or sabotage.” Sen. Joe Simitian (D-
Palo Alto) sponsored the bill. Consequently, the California legislature passed a resolution expressing “deepest
regret” for the wartime internment, curfews, confiscations and other indignities that thousands of Italian and
Italian American families faced. The Grand Council of Fascism deposed Benito Mussolini on July 25, 1943 and
on September 3, 1943 Italy became an ally of the U.S.
