father, fell in<strong>to</strong> the hands <strong>of</strong> the vic<strong>to</strong>r Ninyas,<br />

who retained him captive in his palace. At<br />

the time <strong>of</strong> this unfortunate event, Anushavan<br />

was but 14 years <strong>of</strong> age. When he attained<br />

maturity, some <strong>of</strong> the Assyrian nobles, with<br />

whom he had ingratiated himself <strong>by</strong> his amiable<br />

disposition and manners, interceded on his<br />

behalf with Ninyas, and procured his release<br />

and res<strong>to</strong>ration <strong>to</strong> a part <strong>of</strong> his hereditary<br />

dominions, on condition that he should pay<br />

homage for them <strong>to</strong> the Assyrians.<br />

Anushavan,<br />

on agreeing <strong>to</strong> this condition, assumed the royal<br />

dignity in that portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>Armenia</strong> which had<br />

been res<strong>to</strong>red <strong>to</strong> him. He proved a prince <strong>of</strong><br />

eminently great qualities,<br />

and <strong>by</strong> the alternate<br />

use <strong>of</strong> arms and policy, eventually recovered<br />

the whole kingdom. He enjoyed a long reign<br />

and died 63 years after the fall <strong>of</strong> Cardus,
