father, fell into the hands of the victor Ninyas,
who retained him captive in his palace. At
the time of this unfortunate event, Anushavan
was but 14 years of age. When he attained
maturity, some of the Assyrian nobles, with
whom he had ingratiated himself by his amiable
disposition and manners, interceded on his
behalf with Ninyas, and procured his release
and restoration to a part of his hereditary
dominions, on condition that he should pay
homage for them to the Assyrians.
Anushavan,
on agreeing to this condition, assumed the royal
dignity in that portion of Armenia which had
been restored to him. He proved a prince of
eminently great qualities,
and by the alternate
use of arms and policy, eventually recovered
the whole kingdom. He enjoyed a long reign
