and governed the nation with the most paternal<br />

mildness. He was celebrated for the beauty<br />

<strong>of</strong> his person, few <strong>of</strong> his contemporaries possessing<br />

such a majestic figure and handsome<br />

countenance.<br />

During his government a number <strong>of</strong> depreda<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

made incursions in<strong>to</strong> the province -<strong>of</strong><br />

Vaspurakan <strong>from</strong> Persia, They were opposed<br />

<strong>by</strong> the two brothers Isaac and Hamazasp the<br />

princes <strong>of</strong> the Arzrunians, who in an encounter<br />

with them, both fell after killing numbers <strong>of</strong><br />

the plunderers. It appears that Hamazasp<br />

received a severe wound and fell <strong>from</strong> his horse,<br />

and then being surrounded was soon dispatched.<br />

This sight deeply affecting his brother Isaac,<br />

he rushed impetuously on the murderers,<br />

after revenging the<br />

slaughter <strong>of</strong> a great number, was assailed <strong>from</strong><br />

behind <strong>by</strong> a blow which killed him on the spot.<br />
