Marcianus <strong>to</strong> the command, ?ent it with Vardan<br />

in<strong>to</strong> <strong>Armenia</strong>, where they were joined <strong>by</strong> other<br />

forces <strong>from</strong> <strong>Armenia</strong> Minor <strong>by</strong> order <strong>of</strong> Justinian,<br />

under the command <strong>of</strong> Johan, the<br />

governor <strong>of</strong> that country.<br />

They also received<br />

assistance <strong>of</strong> troops <strong>from</strong> the Egerians, the<br />

Apkhazes, and the Alans. These troops<br />

were then divided in<strong>to</strong> two bodies, one <strong>of</strong><br />

which remained in Mesopotamia, the other<br />

advanced <strong>to</strong> Inner <strong>Armenia</strong>, where lay the<br />

Persians. The Greek troops having surrounded<br />

thelatter, a fight ensued, in which 1,200 Persians<br />

were killed, the rest taking <strong>to</strong> flight.<br />

Vardan,<br />

notwithstanding this success, dared not remain<br />

in<br />

<strong>Armenia</strong>, fearing he might be betrayed in<strong>to</strong><br />

the hands <strong>of</strong> Khosrove. He therefore went<br />

<strong>to</strong> Constantinople, waiting calmly for another<br />
