years. Levond, <strong>from</strong> the village <strong>of</strong> Little Erast,<br />

in the province <strong>of</strong> Arberaney, succeeded him,<br />

A. D.524. and died three years after. Nierses the Second,<br />

<strong>from</strong> the village <strong>of</strong> Ashtarak, in the province <strong>of</strong><br />

Bagrevand, then became pontiff. Shortly after<br />

his election, Nierses, having observed some<br />

irregularities in the conduct <strong>of</strong> the priests,<br />

particularly those who resided in the villages,<br />

convened a meeting <strong>of</strong> bishops in the city <strong>of</strong><br />

Duin, wherein were enacted thirty-eight rules,<br />

<strong>to</strong> be<br />

observed <strong>by</strong> the <strong>Armenia</strong>n ecclesiastics.<br />

A. P. 533. After continuing in the pontificate nine years,<br />

he died, and was succeeded <strong>by</strong> Johannes the<br />

Second, <strong>from</strong> the village <strong>of</strong> Seunzelin, in the<br />

province <strong>of</strong> the Gabelins. Several disturbances
