died, having attained a good old age, and
presided in the prefecture twenty-six years. As
he had been independent four years, his government
is generally reckoned to have lasted
thirty years. Vahan, perhaps, did more for the
good of his country than any other individual
who has lived before or since his time, whether
he be considered as the champion of her church,
the defender of her glory, or the improver of
her internal condition.
