<strong>of</strong> Nerseh and Hirahat the Camsaracans, whom<br />

he immediately seized and sent <strong>to</strong> his camp;<br />

directing them <strong>to</strong> be guarded with all<br />

suitable<br />

respect, and forbidding any violence <strong>to</strong> be attempted<br />

on their purity ; as he conceived that<br />

their husbands, for their sakes, would at least<br />

make some sacrifices, and return <strong>to</strong> obedience <strong>to</strong><br />

the Persian power.<br />

Just after this event Hazaravukht<br />

received an order <strong>from</strong> king Phiroz<br />

<strong>to</strong> march with his army in<strong>to</strong> Georgia. He<br />

therefore was obliged <strong>to</strong> leave <strong>Armenia</strong>, alter<br />

appointing one Shapuh, <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Mihran,<br />

prefect <strong>of</strong> that country ; and leaving him in the<br />

district <strong>of</strong> Basen with 3,000 Persians, and Gudihon,<br />

chief <strong>of</strong> the Seunies, with his followers,<br />

<strong>to</strong> secure his<br />

government, and preserve it <strong>from</strong><br />

any future attacks <strong>of</strong> Vahan and his party.<br />

Vahaniaris against Shapiih the<br />

Prefect.<br />

Shapuh the Mihranian, immediately after a. D.483.<br />

the departure <strong>of</strong> Hazararukht, commenced his<br />

prefecture <strong>by</strong> endeavouring <strong>to</strong> conciliate the two<br />

Camsaracans, Nerseh and Hirahat. For this<br />

purpose he placed their v/ives, who as it will<br />

be recollected had been made prisoners, in a
