obliged <strong>to</strong> obey, setting out with Hirahatthe<br />

Camsaracan, Hazdthe Seunian, and many more<br />

captives in chains. When Nerseh the Camsaracan,<br />

the elder brother <strong>of</strong> Hirahat, heard that<br />

Mihran had taken his brother with him <strong>to</strong><br />

Persia, he became deeply afflicted. Indeed,<br />

since the day <strong>of</strong> his<br />

brother's capture, he had<br />

known no ease nor comfort. At length, not<br />

being able <strong>to</strong> bear any longer the painful reflections<br />

which Hirahat's captivity induced, he<br />

put himself at the head <strong>of</strong> a few resolute men,<br />

and boldly followed Mihran's camp. He imagined,<br />

that <strong>by</strong> vigilantly watching the enemy s<br />

army, he might chance <strong>to</strong> see his brother, and <strong>by</strong><br />

a brisk attack succeed in rescuing him, or, " at<br />

least," says he, ' ' <strong>by</strong> meeting death, I shall obtain<br />

that repose which has been long a stranger<br />

<strong>to</strong> my breast !"<br />

The Persians having encamped<br />

near the village <strong>of</strong> Baguan, in the province <strong>of</strong><br />

Bagrevand, Nerseh with his followers approached.<br />

In this village was a chapel <strong>of</strong><br />

St. Gregory the Illumina<strong>to</strong>r, <strong>to</strong> which Nerseh<br />

went, and thus <strong>of</strong>fered up his prayers, " Oh<br />

blessed St. Gregory ! who didst dispel the gloom<br />

<strong>of</strong> iniquity <strong>from</strong> <strong>Armenia</strong>, I beseech thee <strong>to</strong><br />

hear my prayers, and dispel the gloom with<br />

which sorrow has overshadowed my heart,<br />

bv aiding me in my endeavours <strong>to</strong><br />

procure the<br />

liberation <strong>of</strong> my unfortunate brother !" While
