rendering them somewhat irresolute, Valthank<br />

invented many s<strong>to</strong>ries <strong>to</strong> deceive them, and persuaded<br />

them <strong>to</strong> pitch their<br />

camp near the river<br />

Cur. I! ere, after a delay <strong>of</strong> three days, Mihranat<br />

lenf^ih arrived,<br />

with an immense force, accompanied<br />

<strong>by</strong> elephant^ chariots, and armed cavalry.<br />

<strong>from</strong> various nations. He pitched his camp<br />

opposite <strong>to</strong> that <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Armenia</strong>ns : who when<br />

they saw the vast' superiority <strong>of</strong> numbers<br />

against them, became alarmed, and crossing<br />

the river Cur encamped on the opposite bank.<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> the united army, seized with terror at<br />

the anticipation <strong>of</strong> the approaching contest, sent<br />

and made terms with the Persians, whom they<br />

joined. On the following day, Vahan with his<br />

troops having taken courage, recrossed the river,<br />

and <strong>to</strong>ok post near the enemy's camp. He<br />

arransfed his men in order <strong>of</strong> battle, and both<br />

armies rushed <strong>to</strong> the attack.<br />

Vahan, confiding<br />

in God, and seconded <strong>by</strong> the Camsaracans, cut<br />

down all who opposed him. Many <strong>of</strong> the distinguished<br />

Persian chiefs fell <strong>by</strong> his hand, and he<br />

w^as dreaded <strong>by</strong> the whole <strong>of</strong> the enemy's troops.<br />

During the heat <strong>of</strong> the conflict, Isaac the prefect,<br />

who had wholly<br />

devoted himself <strong>to</strong> Christ<br />

and the church, after performing many acts <strong>of</strong><br />

valour, fell a martyr. Vasak, the brother <strong>of</strong><br />

Vahan, in an encounter with a Persian, broke<br />

his spear against the armour <strong>of</strong> his opponent,
