four Persian generals, Vin Khorian, a powerful<br />

man, with his guards, sustained undauntedly the<br />

glory <strong>of</strong> his nation, and boldly kept his ground.<br />

This being observed <strong>by</strong> Vishnasp, another <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Persian generals, he marched <strong>to</strong> attack the<br />

<strong>Armenia</strong>ns on their weakest side. At this moment<br />

the brave Vahan encountered Vin Khorian,<br />

and after a sharp combat stretched him on the<br />

plain.<br />

Vishnasp was then attacked <strong>by</strong> Nerseh<br />

the Camsaracan, and killed <strong>by</strong> a thrust <strong>of</strong> his<br />

spear. The <strong>Armenia</strong>ns, led <strong>by</strong> Barshel, who<br />

had been defeated and put <strong>to</strong> flight <strong>by</strong> the first<br />

charge <strong>of</strong> the Persians, now looking back and<br />

seeing the Persians were beaten, returned and<br />

joined in the pursuit <strong>of</strong> the fleeing enemy.<br />

More were killed in their flight than they had<br />

left on the field. The vic<strong>to</strong>rs, on their return <strong>to</strong><br />

the Persian camp, found immense spoil, which<br />

they divided amongst each other, returning<br />

thanks <strong>to</strong> God for their success. They then<br />

went <strong>to</strong> the village<br />

<strong>of</strong> Nersehapat, where they<br />

had left the holy pontiff", and with him retired<br />

<strong>to</strong> a place called Varshakie in the province <strong>of</strong><br />

Zalcote. Here they <strong>to</strong>ok rest, being all filled<br />

with joy and triumph.<br />

While the Vahanians were enjoying the<br />

pleasing reflection which followed their vic<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

news reached them that Vard had miraculously
