permitted <strong>to</strong> leave the capital.<br />

Ashusha, prince<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Gugars, <strong>by</strong> the assistance <strong>of</strong> Mihrnerseh,<br />

obtained <strong>from</strong> the king the release <strong>of</strong> Vahan,<br />

Vasak, and Artaces, the three sons <strong>of</strong> Himayak,<br />

the brother <strong>of</strong> Vardan, and <strong>to</strong>ok them with him<br />

<strong>to</strong> his<br />

country, where they were brought up in<br />

the fear <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>by</strong> their mother Zivick, who was<br />

the sister <strong>of</strong> Ashusha's wife.<br />

The youngest son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Himayak, named Vard, was still in the hands<br />

A.D.457. <strong>of</strong> his nurses in the country <strong>of</strong> the Taics. Some<br />

time after this Hazkert died, and was succeeded<br />

in the Persian throne <strong>by</strong> his youngest son Phiroz.<br />

This prince, immediately after his succession,<br />

considerably alleviated the condition <strong>of</strong> tha<br />

<strong>Armenia</strong>n chiefs, <strong>by</strong> allowing them pensions,<br />

which enabled them <strong>to</strong> live more at<br />

their ease*<br />

and having found them in many instances faith*<br />

ful and trustworthy, he res<strong>to</strong>red them <strong>to</strong> <strong>Armenia</strong>.<br />

This occurred in the eighth year <strong>of</strong> his<br />

reign, A. D, 464. He also appointed a new<br />

Prefect, with whom the chiefs set out on their<br />

return <strong>to</strong> their country.<br />

A. D. 464. The new Prefect, appointed <strong>by</strong> the king <strong>of</strong><br />

Persia <strong>to</strong> supersede Atrormizd, was named<br />

Atirwushnasp, and he governed the <strong>Armenia</strong>ns<br />

for a period <strong>of</strong> seventeen years.<br />

On the arrival<br />

<strong>of</strong> the chiefs in <strong>Armenia</strong>, they united with each
