in capturing it, and carried it in triumph <strong>to</strong><br />

Khosrove, who <strong>to</strong>ok possession<br />

property.<br />

Isaac was rewarded for the share he<br />

had in this exploit with the appointment <strong>of</strong><br />

generalissimo <strong>of</strong> his army. Arsaces, when he<br />

heard <strong>of</strong> the capture <strong>of</strong> his treasure, and <strong>of</strong> its<br />

being given <strong>to</strong> Khosrove, wrote <strong>to</strong> the latter <strong>to</strong><br />

demand its res<strong>to</strong>ration. Khosrove treated his<br />

letter with the greatest indifference, replying,<br />

the treasures in question belong <strong>to</strong> the state<br />

preside, and shall be guarded accordingly."<br />

After many fruitless embassies had<br />

passed between them on the subject,<br />

Arsaces<br />

collected an army, and marched with great<br />

resentment against his rival. Khosrove was<br />

not averse <strong>to</strong> the contest, and brought <strong>to</strong>gether<br />

troops, with which he advanced <strong>to</strong> meet Arsaces.<br />

The armies came in sight <strong>of</strong> each other<br />

in the province <strong>of</strong> Vanand. The place on which<br />

they pitched their camps was called Erevil.<br />

As the day was hastening <strong>to</strong> its close when<br />

the two armies approached each other, the<br />

battle was suspended until the following day.<br />

In the interim, they sought repose <strong>from</strong> their<br />

previous fatigues. Both leaders had predetermined<br />

not <strong>to</strong> listen <strong>to</strong> any proposals for peace,<br />

but prepared <strong>to</strong> trust all <strong>to</strong> the sword. Thus<br />

a. d. 390,
