<strong>Armenia</strong> for a period <strong>of</strong> rather more than fifteen<br />

years, died, and, according <strong>to</strong> his desire, was<br />

buried in the village <strong>of</strong> Thordan.<br />

He was succeeded<br />

in the pontifical chair <strong>by</strong> his youngest<br />

son Husik. This individual, during the life <strong>of</strong><br />

Vertannes, had married, and was the father <strong>of</strong><br />

two sons named Pap and Athanageney.<br />

For a<br />

long time previous <strong>to</strong> the death <strong>of</strong> the late pontiff,<br />

Husik had secluded himself <strong>from</strong> the world,<br />

leadin.2: a life <strong>of</strong> the severest mortifications.<br />

He was universally admired for the intimate<br />

acquaintance he had with the holy scriptures<br />

and the fame <strong>of</strong> his sanctity was so great, that<br />

at the<br />

death <strong>of</strong> his father he was unanimously<br />

appointed his successor. About this time a. d. 36!.<br />

Julian the apostate began <strong>to</strong> rule the eastern<br />

Romans, and marched at the head <strong>of</strong> a large force<br />

<strong>from</strong> Constantinople against the Persians ;<br />

the<br />

latter, on the approach <strong>of</strong> the emperor <strong>to</strong> the<br />

Euphrates, destroyed the bridges which had been<br />

constructed over that river, and there<strong>by</strong> hindered<br />

the advance <strong>of</strong> the army <strong>of</strong> their enemies.<br />

At this<br />

conjuncture Julian wrote <strong>to</strong> Tiran the<br />

<strong>Armenia</strong>n king, <strong>to</strong> render him assistance.<br />

The<br />

latter, unmindful <strong>of</strong> the treaty which he had<br />

made with Shapuh, attacked the Persians, and<br />

completely routed them.<br />

He then re-established<br />

the brids^es, and thus afforded Julian and his<br />

army an unmolested passage over the Euphrates,
