perceiving the destruction this redoubtable warrior<br />

spread around him, cast his eyes <strong>to</strong>wards<br />

the church <strong>of</strong> Etchmiatchin, (erected <strong>by</strong> St.<br />

Gregory the Illumina<strong>to</strong>r), at a short distance<br />

<strong>from</strong> the scene <strong>of</strong> the combat, and thus exclaimed<br />

:<br />

" Oh God ! who didst guide the s<strong>to</strong>ne<br />

slung <strong>by</strong> David <strong>to</strong> the eye <strong>of</strong> the proud Goliah,<br />

direct my spear <strong>to</strong> the eye <strong>of</strong> this mighty man !"<br />

whereupon he threw his spear with all his might<br />

against ihe giant. The weapon happily penetrated<br />

his eye, and brought him <strong>to</strong> the ground.<br />

The <strong>Armenia</strong>n army, inspirited <strong>by</strong> this miracle,<br />

as it<br />

was deemed, fought with redoubled courage,<br />

and put the enemy <strong>to</strong> the rout, after killing<br />

an immense number <strong>of</strong> them. The vic<strong>to</strong>rious<br />

leaders returned with their troops <strong>to</strong> the country<br />

<strong>of</strong> Zophs. They were here met <strong>by</strong> the king, who<br />

in gratitude <strong>to</strong> Vahan for the exertions he had<br />

made, ga\e him a grant <strong>of</strong> the ground upon which<br />

the enemy were defeated, <strong>to</strong>gether with the fortress<br />

<strong>of</strong> Cshakan. The two deceased generals<br />

Mihran and Manachihr were succeeded in their<br />

appijntments<strong>by</strong> GarjoyleMalkhazuni,andZura,<br />

the son <strong>of</strong> Manachihr; Garjoyle assuming the<br />

command <strong>of</strong> the northern division, and Zura <strong>of</strong><br />

the southern. The rank <strong>of</strong> generalissimo <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Armenia</strong>n army was given <strong>to</strong> Arshavir the<br />

Camsaracan, who had particularly distinguished<br />
