the Hagarites seized the government. Khosrove,<br />

having previously taken up the cause <strong>of</strong> the<br />

deceased king <strong>of</strong> Persia, on the death <strong>of</strong> the<br />

latter, marched in<strong>to</strong> Pema, <strong>to</strong> dispossess the<br />

usurper Artashir <strong>of</strong> the crown. Several years<br />

a. d. 246.<br />

elapsed in this war, until at length Artashir,<br />

being defeated, was obliged <strong>to</strong> quit Persia, and<br />

flee in<strong>to</strong> India. Khosrove then returned <strong>to</strong><br />

Atropatia and built a city in that country,<br />

which he called Davrej, that is, built <strong>to</strong><br />

perpetuate the remembrance <strong>of</strong> the vengeance<br />

he had taken on Artashir. After finishing<br />

this work he went in<strong>to</strong> the country <strong>of</strong> Uti.<br />

Artashir the Sasanian seeing that whilst Khos-<br />

rove was in existence he could nt>t hope <strong>to</strong><br />

reign over Persia, determined <strong>to</strong> endeavour<br />

<strong>to</strong> destroy his enemy <strong>by</strong> treachery. For this<br />

purpose he <strong>of</strong>fered a great sum <strong>of</strong> money <strong>to</strong> any<br />

<strong>of</strong> his chiefs who would undertake <strong>to</strong> assassinate<br />

the <strong>Armenia</strong>n monarch.<br />

A chief <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong><br />

Anak, <strong>of</strong> the tribe <strong>of</strong> the Surenian Pahlavies,<br />

tempted <strong>by</strong> the rich reward, accepted the commission,<br />

and immediately prepared <strong>to</strong> execute it.<br />

Pretending <strong>to</strong> be hostile <strong>to</strong> the interests <strong>of</strong><br />

Artashir, he, with his family, came and settled<br />

in <strong>Armenia</strong>. He first arrived in the province<br />

<strong>of</strong> Artaz, and resided for a short time in the<br />

very place<br />

where the remains <strong>of</strong> St. 'I'haddeus<br />
