in which the latter were vic<strong>to</strong>rious, and Tiran<br />

with his army was put <strong>to</strong> flight, and pursued<br />

as far as the extensive valley <strong>of</strong> Basen. Here<br />

the fugitives were met <strong>by</strong> the eastern and<br />

western divisions <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Armenia</strong>n army under<br />

the command <strong>of</strong> Artavazd and Zareh. A junction<br />

<strong>of</strong> the whole was formed, and another stand<br />

made against the Romans, in which the x^irmenians<br />

were completely defeated.<br />

Roused <strong>by</strong> a sense <strong>of</strong> glory, and the recollection<br />

<strong>of</strong> the valiant exploits <strong>of</strong> their father Artaces,<br />

they made another attempt <strong>to</strong> arrest the progress<br />

<strong>of</strong> the vic<strong>to</strong>rious enemy. A bloody engagement<br />

followed, in the middle <strong>of</strong> which, Sumbat,<br />

who had been long expected, arrived with his<br />

division in sight, and hastening <strong>to</strong> the attack<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Romans, with the<br />

rapidity <strong>of</strong> lightning,<br />

turned the tide <strong>of</strong> vic<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>to</strong> the side <strong>of</strong> the<br />

young princes.<br />

These, animated <strong>by</strong> the example<br />

<strong>of</strong> the gallant Sumbat, fought with double<br />

determination. A rout <strong>of</strong> the enemy ensued,<br />

principally owing <strong>to</strong> the skill <strong>of</strong> the brave and<br />

undaunted Sumbat. The Romans were pursued<br />

<strong>to</strong> the borders <strong>of</strong> Cesarea, <strong>by</strong> the southern<br />

division under Sumbat, who, although<br />

man, made war with all<br />
