for their expulsion. He wrote for levies <strong>from</strong><br />

Judea <strong>to</strong><br />

Herod, Agrippa, and the other chiefs<br />

<strong>of</strong> that country; also<br />

<strong>from</strong> Assyria and Cilicia,<br />

<strong>to</strong> assist his troops in their intended expedition<br />

<strong>to</strong> Upper <strong>Armenia</strong>. The general appointed <strong>to</strong><br />

command this vast army was Domitius Corbulo,<br />

Quadratus governor <strong>of</strong> Assyria being nominated<br />

A. D. 56. ^^^^ lieutenant. Corbulo, having assumed the<br />

command, advanced <strong>to</strong> the frontiers <strong>of</strong> <strong>Armenia</strong>,<br />

when hearing that Tirithus had collected a large<br />

force <strong>to</strong> oppose him, he paused awhile, being<br />

apprehensive that Darius the Persian king<br />

would take up arms in defence <strong>of</strong> his relation.<br />

To this monarch the Roman general sent proposals<br />

<strong>of</strong> peace ; the principal <strong>of</strong> which was<br />

that he should consent <strong>to</strong> the expulsion<br />

<strong>of</strong> his<br />

brother Tirithus <strong>from</strong> <strong>Armenia</strong>. Darius appeared<br />

<strong>to</strong> desire no better, but in reality had no<br />

thoughts <strong>of</strong> complying with the demands <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Roman. He therefore amused the ambassadors<br />

<strong>of</strong>. Corbulo with promises, and thus spun out the,<br />

negotiation for more than a year, <strong>by</strong> which the<br />

Roman army was much distressed, <strong>from</strong> the<br />

uncongenial nature <strong>of</strong> the climate <strong>to</strong> which they<br />

were exposed.<br />
