Artavazd the First, son <strong>of</strong> Tigranes the 39"<br />

The Rekns <strong>of</strong> Artavazd the First<br />

Second, as we have seen in the last chapter, had<br />

been appointed during the life time <strong>of</strong> his father<br />

<strong>to</strong> govern the province <strong>of</strong> Ararat ;<br />

he now succeeded<br />

<strong>to</strong> the throne, and changed the seat <strong>of</strong><br />

government <strong>from</strong> Nisibisin Mesopotamia, which<br />

had always been the royal residence <strong>of</strong> the Arsacidse,<br />

<strong>to</strong> Ararat. He gave his brothers and sisters<br />

the provinces <strong>of</strong> Aliovit and Arberaney <strong>to</strong> reside<br />

in, with their produce for subsistence. He<br />

also bes<strong>to</strong>wed on them pensions equal <strong>to</strong> the<br />

allowances made <strong>to</strong> the other Arsacidae dwelling<br />

in Hashtens. But Artavazd gave in<strong>to</strong> dissolute<br />

habits and lost the affections <strong>of</strong> his soldiers<br />

and his other subjects.<br />

The former, weak and<br />

inefficient, were unable <strong>to</strong> protect the places<br />

confided <strong>to</strong> their charge, and many important<br />

possessions in Mesopotamia fell in<strong>to</strong> the hands<br />

<strong>of</strong> the enemy, which created a deal <strong>of</strong> murmuring.<br />
