Between him and Mithridates<br />

many battles were fought. The latter<br />

having collected an army <strong>of</strong> Scythians combated<br />

with great success, and succeeded in regaining<br />

the whole <strong>of</strong> Pontus. But what all the<br />

power <strong>of</strong> the Roman State had been unable <strong>to</strong><br />

do for so many years, treachery at last effected:<br />

he was deserted <strong>by</strong> his prime minister, who had<br />

His chiefs followed the example <strong>of</strong> his<br />

Mithridates had taken up his residence. At<br />

his two daughters Mithridata and Neussa, one<br />

which had necessitated him <strong>to</strong><br />

which he declared it <strong>to</strong> be his intention <strong>to</strong>
