This Arsaces, after a brilliant reign <strong>of</strong> 31 HH;<br />

years, died, and was succeeded in his power <strong>by</strong><br />

Artaces his son, who also died after enjoying<br />

his dignity 26 years. Arsaces the Second, a<br />

son <strong>of</strong> the latter succeeded.<br />

This prince was styled the Great. His glory<br />

far transcended that <strong>of</strong> his grandfather. He<br />

extended his conquests in India, <strong>to</strong> the shores<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Indus. He subsequently conquered the<br />

whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>Armenia</strong>. He expelled Artavazd, the<br />

last governor <strong>of</strong> this country, and appointed his<br />

brother Valarsaces king <strong>of</strong> both <strong>Armenia</strong> Major<br />

and Minor, <strong>to</strong> which he annexed the country <strong>of</strong><br />

Atropatia. This revolution in the affairs <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Armenia</strong> happened in the 40th year <strong>of</strong> the reigH<br />

<strong>of</strong><br />

Arsaces the Second, or the Great, which is<br />

about 149 years before the Christian eraw<br />

Arsaces exhorted his brother <strong>to</strong> extend his<br />

dominion <strong>by</strong> arms <strong>to</strong>wards the north-west.<br />

" As far as your mind conceives an enterprize<br />

practicable, let<br />

your valour make the attempt.<br />

For the brave acknowledge no limits. Arms<br />

are their engines <strong>of</strong> power : the more these are<br />

exercised, the more they possess."
