THE THREE PRINCES<br />

Once upon a time <strong>the</strong>re lived a princess who was as wise as she was beautiful. Princess<br />

Elizabeth lived in a wonderful palace. On <strong>the</strong> plain where her palace was situated <strong>the</strong>re were<br />

many flowers. Beautiful birds sang in <strong>the</strong> trees and golden fish swam in <strong>the</strong> lakes near <strong>the</strong><br />

palace.<br />

Princes from all over <strong>the</strong> world came to ask for <strong>the</strong> princess’s hand, but <strong>the</strong> ones she liked<br />

best were Prince James, Prince Albert and Prince Charles. Prince James and Prince Albert<br />

were both rich but nei<strong>the</strong>r good-looking nor attractive. Prince Charles was tall, strong and<br />

handsome. His dark eyes melted <strong>the</strong> princess’s heart <strong>the</strong> first time she saw him. But he was<br />

poor. His birthplace was a small land high in <strong>the</strong> mountains. But he was kind and just. His son<br />

took after him. No wonder <strong>the</strong> princess loved him with all her heart.<br />

But when she told King George that she would marry Prince Charles her fa<strong>the</strong>r was not<br />

happy. He wanted a rich and mighty husband for his daughter.<br />

“Marry any prince <strong>you</strong> choose,” said King George, “but do not marry Prince Charles.” “In<br />

that case,” said Elizabeth, “let each prince ride out into <strong>the</strong> world, returning in a year’s time<br />

with <strong>the</strong> most wonderful thing he has found. I will marry <strong>the</strong> prince who will bring me <strong>the</strong><br />

greatest wonder.”<br />

The next morning Prince James, Prince Albert and Prince Charles rode out toge<strong>the</strong>r. They<br />

traveled across highlands and lowlands, valley that lay between high mountains. At <strong>the</strong> end of<br />

<strong>the</strong> valley <strong>the</strong>re grew <strong>the</strong> tallest tree <strong>the</strong>y had ever seen. Three roads ran in three different<br />

directions. The princes thought it was a sign for <strong>the</strong>m to part.<br />

“The time has come for us to go our own separate ways,” Prince James said. The rest<br />
