Due to its versatility, flexibility, and high operational
convenience the KAHL extruder is also appropriate for the
production of extruded snacks. Thanks to its completely
unproblematic starting and stopping behaviour, for
example, the extruder type OEE 8 is the optimum machine
for developing creative product designs and testing new
formulae. Dies and final paddles are changed within a

few minutes. The waste of expensive raw materials is
practically excluded by the unique hydraulic system
which serves for fast opening and closing of the extruder
with the die.

Fish feed
Floating or slowly sinking pellets can be produced for:
tilapia, carps, catfish. Very slowly sinking pellets for
trouts, salmons, and perches. Or water-stable pellets
for shrimps and other crustaceans. The production
of extruded feed with a granular size of 0.1 - 2 mm is
possible, too.
Petfood
The production of high-quality petfood for dogs, cats,
or zoo animals requires an optimum treatment of the
mixtures during the fine grinding, pre-conditioning,
extrusion, as well as coating processes.

Rice mill and parboiling plant in Greece and Italy
The rice processing plant of the company Spanos Bos.
Co. is one of the most modern plants. Early in 2003 the
plant was handed over to the complete satisfaction of the
customer since the expectations with respect to capacity
and quality of the final product were exceeded by far.
The plant comprises a rice mill with an input capacity of
7.5 t/h, a parboiling plant with an output capacity of 6 t/h
as well as all auxiliary equipment, such as pre-cleaning,
silos, husk discharge and combustion plant, steam plant,
polish discharge, packing and storage of the finished
products. The existing silo plant with 8 silos and a total
capacity of 8,000 tons paddy could be integrated in the
plant design.

Another parboiling plant with a capacity of 12 t/h was set
in operation in January 2003 to the entire satisfaction of
our customer, the company Riso Scotti.
With these plants the company F.H. Schule Mühlenbau
GmbH underline all the more that they belong to the world
market leaders, as far as rice treatment and processing
and particularly parboiling are concerned.

From green beans to roasted coffee
I. Green coffee handling
Coffee is our life. For more than 40 years Neuhaus Neotec
have worked for the coffee industry.
Many roasting companies and green coffee traders
world-wide have decided in favour of a user-friendly
plant of Neuhaus Neotec for the handling of green
coffee, including intake of the green beans, either
fully automatic or manual, conveying, storage, mixing,
weighing, and cleaning.
Neuhaus Neotec are one of the leading sellers of fully
automatic intake systems for large quantities of products
which are supplied in bags or containers.
The first coffee service terminal world-wide for intake and
conditioning of bulk coffee has already been designed and
realised by us.
Today Neuhaus-Neotec are the leading suppliers in
this field.
II. Roasting technology
The roasting process has not revealed all of its secrets
yet. During the roasting process more than 800 identified
organic compounds are formed, many of them highly
volatile and sensitive, the composition of which determines
the characteristic aroma of the roasted coffee.
For processing the green coffee to roasted coffee Neuhaus
Neotec have developed their own roasting technologies,
which fulfil today's requirements of the customers and
correspond to future quality demands.
User-friendly machines and plants of all capacities,
which work continuously and batch-wise, have been sold
worldwide.
Market trends, new results of coffee research, electronic
innovations, and environmental protection demands require
a permanent further development of the roasting process.
In close co-operation with our customers and research
institutes the relations between aroma development and
quality improvement are studied and the results are put
into practice to the highest benefit of our customers.
The aim of the roasters is to combine the variety of
green coffee provenances with a roasting process, which
allows a flexible application of the roasting parameters for
receiving the optimum of the bean or blend, and this in a
precise and reproducible way.
Economic efficiency, energy consumption, and availability
are the decisive factors for deciding on an investment.
Due to their simple design and the few moveable parts
the Neuhaus Neotec roasting machines have set an
example.
The precision and versatility of our roasting process
set new standards in the coffee industry. The complete
command of the key technologies allows Neuhaus Neotec
to find custom-specific solutions and to realise them
quickly.
III. Pilot plant

Our pilot plant which is equipped with laboratory and
pilot-scale roasting machines allows the investigation of
the influence of different roasting conditions on the coffee
quality.
The effects of phase, profile, preliminary roasting as well
as pre-drying processes can be simulated.
Our customers can study here the complete range of
possible roasting conditions, such as temperature, air
quantity or the influence of slow and fast roasting on the
development of the coffee.
IV. Grinding
Grinding is a technology which requires highest precision
with regard to production tolerance as well as a robust
machine construction.
Neuhaus Neotec grinders fulfil the demand for reliability,
precision, and permanent observance of the predetermined
particle size distribution.
Quality assurance requires a careful and oxygen-protected
handling of the roasted coffee from grinding to packing.
Neuhaus Neotec have various designs to choose from.
Innovative design details make the grinders a leading
technology.
For grinding a laboratory roll mill is available allowing
the optimum design of a large-scale production grinder,
whether an optimum cup of espresso or a dust-free
granulate for the production of instant coffee is to be
guaranteed.
Furthermore, a pilot plant is planned for pre-treatment of
the green coffee (with steam).

Wood pellets experience a boom
Wood waste such as sawdust, sanding
dust, and shavings can be conditioned
and processed to marketable products.
The demand for wood pellets as fuel for
example has increased substantially. They
are transported to Northern Germany, from
Sweden to Rhineland-Palatinate, and even
from Canada through the Panama Canal to
Sweden. Wood pellets are trendy. We are
looking for something "lasting" in energy
management. We need energy but we do
not want to burden our environment with
fossil fuels. Wind energy plants, solar cells,
tidal power stations, thermal pumps, thermal
power coupling, bio diesel, and wood pellets.
None of these technologies alone will be
able to cover our energy consumption, but
a combination of all possibilities will bring
us closer to our target.
Wood pellets ensure a combustion which is
very friendly to the environment and CO2neutral.
They can be transported by modern
conveying equipment and are easy to store.
A heating installation fired by wood pellets
ensures the same comfort as an oil heating
installation.
Wood pellets will not be a passing fancy,
but will be well established on the energy
market.
The KAHL flat die pelleting press is the
central part of a wood pelleting plant.

Chemical and recycling industries

Completely new industrial branches increasingly use
KAHL's well-established technology.
Our sales department 5 helps the chemical and the
recycling industries with solutions for processing their
products. At present the non-food section is about 20 %
of KAHL's annual turnover with an increasing tendency.
Mr. Sigmar Jagnow, head of sales department 5, thinks
that KAHL's leading market position in this field is
founded on innovative processing technique:
“We adjust the pelleting press to the product
and not the product to the pelleting press.
This is achieved by our flat die system which
gives us a clear advantage in comparison to
our competitors.”
KAHL pelleting presses allow to produce very small
quantities for the pharmaceutical industry as well as
large quantities of pellets consisting of completely
different materials such as wood, household refuse,
sewage sludge, or tyres. This is the advantage of the
KAHL pelleting presses which, according to Mr. Jagnow,
are able to pellet any material which can be processed
at a temperature of between 40 and 110 °C.
“The only limits are set by regulations, for
example how much binder can be added to
a product.”
Pellets produced from household refuse, wood, and
sewage sludge are taken by garbage incineration plants,
gasification plants, or the cement industry. Pellets made
from tyres, however, are an exception. Until now it has
not been profitable to recycle waste tyres for using them
as granulated material on tennis courts, for mixing them
with asphalt in road construction for noise control or
in playgrounds. KAHL has just developed a profitable
processing plant; one of them is processing 4.8 tons of

“This processing technique could be of
special interest for road construction", says
Mr. Jagnow, "as this granulated material
could be used for binding asphalt, so that
the road topping is less susceptible to
changes in temperature and reduces noise.”
Another development in recycling will be of great
importance for KAHL: Starting from 2005 disposals on
garbage dumping grounds will no longer be possible,
which will probable create a gap in waste disposal of 5
to 15 million tons per year.
“There are of course many methods
for turning a recycling product into a
combustible material", says Mr. Jagnow,
"especially modern waste incineration plants
offer several options for incineration such
as dust injection. Pelleting is one of many
recycling methods.”
New processing techniques are developed at the KAHL
pilot plant, where 120 to 150 tests are carried out per
year.
“Meanwhile a lot of the tests are made with
non-food products. We have prepared a data
bank of more than 500 products which serve
as information for our customers.”

“On fairs we are often asked whether the
KAHL pelleting press can process a certain
material”, says Mr. Jagnow.
These prospective buyers are invited to the KAHL pilot
plant where they can follow the test step by step.
“In this way we can study the overall problem
in the best possible way together with
the customer and we will then submit an
informative offer. We deal with very different
customers who expect very different things.
The recycling industry for example is hardly
interested in how the final product will look
like, whereas the product itself is of utmost
importance to the pharmaceutical industry.”

Grinders for chemical products
The chemical roll grinder is used for crushing if a final
product with as narrow a particle size distribution as
possible is to be obtained. Dust - and thus screenings
and reprocessing - are avoided if the chemical roll grinder
WMC is used. Traditional crushing methods with universal
or hammer mills no longer meet the increasing demands
on an economic crushing method. With the chemical

distribution is achieved.
The narrow particle size spectrum is achieved by means
of a continuous compressive shear action between two
serrated rollers with a defined roller gap.
This principle offers the advantages of a narrow particle
size spectrum and a low fines content.

Prospects for the use of KAHL pelleting presses in the
recycling industry
At present many recycling plants use KAHL flat-die
pelleting presses for the production of pellets from waste
materials (domestic waste, combined industrial and site
waste). The pellets are pyrolized in special gasifiers.
Apart from this, waste can also be processed to a slightly
pelleted product (so-called fluff) by KAHL flat-die pelleting
presses.
In the last few years various plants have been sold for this
purpose, too, which are successfully in operation.
Further promising projects are under discussion on the
German market. In 2005 at the latest there will surely be
more dynamic changes in the production and utilization of
substitute combustibles due to the "closure" of the waste
disposal sites - apart from one or the other transition
regulation.
