Dear Readers,<br />

Considered <strong>in</strong> global terms the crisis is not<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d us, yet, but we have seen rock bottom!<br />

With<strong>in</strong> the l<strong>as</strong>t ten years time after time<br />

Germany h<strong>as</strong> been the problem child and<br />

the foreign markets have generated our<br />

profit. Now Germany is the anchor and<br />

the foreign markets experienced the crisis.<br />

What is different <strong>in</strong> Germany? Due to the<br />

longstand<strong>in</strong>g “downturn” compared to numerous<br />

other countries there w<strong>as</strong> no real<br />

estate bubble <strong>in</strong> Germany; the country w<strong>as</strong><br />

exhausted already. The sensitivity for energy<br />

sav<strong>in</strong>g is comparably strong <strong>in</strong> Germany,<br />

subsidies for private refurbishment<br />

are quite attractive and support<strong>in</strong>g public<br />

contracts do the rest. And the unemployment<br />

rate <strong>in</strong> the country is on a surpris<strong>in</strong>g<br />

low level; f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>vestment options are<br />

still a risk or that to say the return is rather<br />

“wimpy” – hence best preconditions for a<br />

refurbishment boom!<br />

Meanwhile there is still little good news<br />

from the foreign countries; after the severe<br />

slump <strong>in</strong> the CIS States we observe<br />

a respectable upward trend there, the rest<br />

of Europe experiences stagnation and <strong>in</strong><br />

West and South Europe we are even struggl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with unbroken downward tendencies.<br />

So our branch does not spot the muchquoted<br />

“V”, yet! And there are only few<br />

arguments for a decisive development <strong>in</strong><br />

2011; Germany will not fall back <strong>as</strong> expected<br />

and feared – fortunately there will be<br />

even more subsidies next year – and the<br />

foreign states will recover from the crises<br />

only step by step.<br />

On a medium term the markets will not be<br />

helpful, so we have to help ourselves! It is<br />

evident that a shift <strong>in</strong> the market position<br />

only takes place <strong>in</strong> economic crises! The<br />

better strategy prevails; and a consistent<br />

implementation is worth it. More and<br />

more frequently we get the feedback that<br />

we have set the right focus and we are<br />

encouraged to adhere to our <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />

program also <strong>in</strong> times of lower profit; to<br />

<strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong>to the susta<strong>in</strong>able upgrade of our<br />

manifold service tools and to <strong>in</strong>vest particularly<br />

<strong>in</strong>to our staffs – <strong>in</strong> the end they<br />

make the difference!<br />

<strong>VBH</strong> Interim Balance<br />

Strong German Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Leads<br />

to an Incre<strong>as</strong>e <strong>in</strong> Turnover<br />

A 9.2 percent <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong>e <strong>in</strong> sales shows<br />

a particularly ple<strong>as</strong>ant development<br />

for <strong>VBH</strong> <strong>in</strong> Germany <strong>in</strong> the first term of<br />

2010. Meanwhile the sales <strong>in</strong> Western<br />

Europe <strong>in</strong> many of the countries rema<strong>in</strong><br />

regressive due to the weak market<br />

situation. Nevertheless, with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

l<strong>as</strong>t six months the group turnover had<br />

<strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong>ed by 2.6 percent.<br />

The first half performance record <strong>in</strong> figures<br />

shows an <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong>e of 2.6 percent to<br />

345.2 million Euros compared to 336.3<br />

million Euros <strong>in</strong> the previous year. In the<br />

second quarter there w<strong>as</strong> even an <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong>e<br />

of 7.0 percent (13.2 million Euros).<br />

That is a clear <strong>in</strong>dication of a significant<br />

improvement <strong>in</strong> the period under report<br />

despite a careful start <strong>in</strong> January after a<br />

long and snowy w<strong>in</strong>ter se<strong>as</strong>on <strong>in</strong> many<br />

regions of <strong>VBH</strong>.<br />

Prognosis: 5 Percent Growth<br />

by the End of the Year<br />

The E<strong>as</strong>t European segment also shows<br />

a positive and ple<strong>as</strong><strong>in</strong>g development with<br />

an <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong>e of 4.8 percent and the other<br />

markets even generated a sales <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong>e<br />

of about 19.2 percent due to the swiftly<br />

ris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>VBH</strong> market activities <strong>in</strong> Turkey<br />

and the grow<strong>in</strong>g markets <strong>in</strong> Asia (also<br />

see World Wide). On b<strong>as</strong>e of this development<br />

<strong>in</strong> the above mentioned countries<br />

the management expects a growth<br />

<strong>in</strong> sales of about 5 percent just under<br />

800 million Euros for the current bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

year. However the operative result<br />

(EBIT) had decre<strong>as</strong>ed by 0.7 million<br />

Euros <strong>in</strong> the first term it still rema<strong>in</strong>s on a<br />

positive level.<br />

Nevertheless the management anticipates<br />

a l<strong>as</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g downward trend <strong>in</strong> West<br />

Europe for the present bus<strong>in</strong>ess year -<br />

<strong>in</strong> the first term the sales decre<strong>as</strong>ed by<br />

11.4 percent. A slight relaxation of the<br />

markets on a low standard is expected<br />

for 2011 at the earliest.<br />

New Central Warehouse for<br />

South and Central America<br />

After <strong>VBH</strong> had extended its market activities<br />

to Argent<strong>in</strong>a a new central warehouse<br />

will be established <strong>in</strong> Panama to<br />

supply the exist<strong>in</strong>g subsidiaries <strong>in</strong> Argent<strong>in</strong>a<br />

and Mexico <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> further markets<br />

<strong>in</strong> South and Central America. Furthermore<br />

new subsidiary had been built<br />

<strong>in</strong> Cauc<strong>as</strong>us seated <strong>in</strong> Tbilisi.<br />

The house brand greenteQ is an unaffected<br />

positive growth driver <strong>as</strong> well:<br />

Meanwhile more than 1,800 greenteQ<br />

products complete the product portfolio<br />

of strong manufacturer’s brands. 16<br />

months after the launch the share of turnover<br />

of greenteQ products <strong>in</strong> Germany is<br />

more than 5 percent. Medium-term the<br />

company strive for a share of m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />

10 percent of the group sales.<br />

And the development of the service<br />

range of <strong>VBH</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s positive, too. Besides<br />

CE-fix, the <strong>VBH</strong> knowledge data<br />

b<strong>as</strong>e and the new generated search eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

‘f<strong>in</strong>d without search<strong>in</strong>g’, <strong>in</strong>novations<br />

like the smart phone apps for the mobile<br />

LOGOS are very popular.<br />

Top-Cl<strong>as</strong>s Tra<strong>in</strong>ees<br />

at <strong>VBH</strong><br />

Everybody who h<strong>as</strong> to render everyday<br />

services knows that a profound and<br />

good tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong>dispensable. Hence<br />

<strong>VBH</strong> attaches great importance to a<br />

high standard tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of its apprentices.<br />

With success: The creative commitment<br />

of the apprentices contributes to<br />

the company’s work.<br />

The tra<strong>in</strong>ees at <strong>VBH</strong> are highly motivated<br />

and enjoy their work. Besides the every<br />

day work <strong>in</strong> the different departments of<br />

the enterprise there a particular project<br />

and t<strong>as</strong>ks they have to manage <strong>in</strong>dependently<br />

- e.g. to create a video clip to present<br />

the <strong>VBH</strong> LOGOS scanners.<br />

15 tra<strong>in</strong>ees from all over Germany had<br />

been entrusted with this challenge. The<br />

participation w<strong>as</strong> optional, the requirements<br />

were highly demand<strong>in</strong>g. Supraregional<br />

groups established the film script,<br />

producers and location were determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

and there w<strong>as</strong> a c<strong>as</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g for the actors - all<br />

members of crew were staff members of<br />

<strong>VBH</strong>. It w<strong>as</strong> a crucial experience for the<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ees <strong>as</strong> this collective project offers<br />

the opportunity to meet other tra<strong>in</strong>ees<br />

from all over Germany and even f<strong>in</strong>d new<br />

friends. And each of them experienced the<br />

significance of team work and an excellent<br />

network<strong>in</strong>g - either <strong>as</strong> actor, cable carrier<br />

or grip dur<strong>in</strong>g the two days of shoot<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Successful Vocational Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

and Best Mark<br />

Not only <strong>in</strong> the wonderful movie world but<br />

also <strong>in</strong> the everyday work<strong>in</strong>g life the tra<strong>in</strong>ees<br />

of <strong>VBH</strong> always show that they have<br />

got what it takes. K<strong>as</strong>im Özayd<strong>in</strong>, a skilled<br />

worker for warehous<strong>in</strong>g and logistics at<br />

<strong>VBH</strong>, did not only f<strong>in</strong>ish his vocational<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the central warehouse <strong>in</strong> Ilsfeld<br />

successfully and with honour but thanks to<br />

his extraord<strong>in</strong>ary commitment and excellent<br />

performance at school he w<strong>as</strong> awarded<br />

<strong>as</strong> ‘Best Tra<strong>in</strong>ee of His Career’.<br />

His tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g supervisor and warehouse<br />

manager Roland Hübsch is very ple<strong>as</strong>ed<br />

about the results of K<strong>as</strong>im Özayd<strong>in</strong>’s<br />

performance: “Qualified employees like<br />

K<strong>as</strong>im Özayd<strong>in</strong> make it possible to offer<br />

high-cl<strong>as</strong>s services to our customers and<br />

meet their requirements. There a numerous<br />

opportunities at <strong>VBH</strong> for committed<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ees like him.” K<strong>as</strong>im Özayd<strong>in</strong> plans a<br />

This might be an opportunity to professionalize<br />

New Career Portal for<br />

Beg<strong>in</strong>ners and Professionals<br />

The new portal of <strong>VBH</strong> offers quick and<br />

detailed <strong>in</strong>formation for successful applications.<br />

Beg<strong>in</strong>ners <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> professionals<br />

get <strong>in</strong>formed about the opportunities<br />

of a vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at <strong>VBH</strong>, about<br />

programs of dual courses of study at the<br />

university and about <strong>in</strong>ternational tra<strong>in</strong>ee<br />

and further tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs abroad. The<br />

further development of the present staff<br />

is one of the ma<strong>in</strong> concerns for Karsten<br />

Kreibich, Vice President and Staff Execu-<br />

tive of <strong>VBH</strong>: “<strong>VBH</strong> - that is our staff. They<br />

represent the culture, the performance<br />

and the community of <strong>VBH</strong>. The essence<br />

of <strong>VBH</strong> is the contacts of our sales force,<br />

Precondition for a successful career at<br />

<strong>VBH</strong> is the will<strong>in</strong>gness to prove commitment<br />

and <strong>in</strong>itiative. To speak different<br />

language is an advantage but also to be<br />

prepared for a constant further tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>VBH</strong> offers <strong>in</strong>ternal <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> external<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs, e.g. one and a halfyear<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational junior tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for prospective<br />

managers or a two-year <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ee program. When look<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

new managers, <strong>VBH</strong> first falls back on<br />

and provides the requisite know-how for<br />

As <strong>VBH</strong> is presented <strong>in</strong> various markets,<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly by the numerous staff<br />

members from all over the world, the<br />

company unites a lot of different cultures.<br />

Each of them and all of them<br />

promote diversity <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> mutual<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g. Hence <strong>VBH</strong> supports<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational new talents with specific<br />

programs.<br />

The understand<strong>in</strong>g of other cultures and<br />

markets, to note the dist<strong>in</strong>ctive local<br />

characteristics, to learn from that and to<br />

exchange positive experience – that <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

know-how at <strong>VBH</strong> makes the<br />

difference. “In order to exploit this potential<br />

we promote qualified junior staff from<br />

different countries and offer perspectives<br />

with <strong>in</strong>ternational tra<strong>in</strong>ee and management<br />

programs”, says Karsten Kreibich<br />

Vice President and Labour Director<br />

of <strong>VBH</strong>. Subsequent to the programs<br />

the staffs work for <strong>VBH</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

projects or <strong>in</strong> their home countries.<br />

From Slovakia to Germany,<br />

from Scotland to Belgium<br />

<strong>For</strong> example Katar<strong>in</strong>a Biresova, orig<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

from Slovenia, works <strong>in</strong> the German head<br />

quarters and is responsible for <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

market<strong>in</strong>g projects. To work <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

team is particularly appeal<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

her:”<strong>VBH</strong> offers the opportunity to realise<br />

your own ide<strong>as</strong> and <strong>as</strong>sume the responsibility<br />

for <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g projects.” Johanna<br />

Tzerba outl<strong>in</strong>es someth<strong>in</strong>g that like. The<br />

young woman, born <strong>in</strong> Austria, found her<br />

way to Germany via Scotland. At present<br />

she is responsible for different sales activities<br />

and IT projects <strong>in</strong> Italy and Belgium.<br />

“<strong>VBH</strong> is large enough to offer <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

experience with a short and professional<br />

decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>For</strong> this re<strong>as</strong>on<br />

it is quite e<strong>as</strong>y to realise good projects.”<br />

The tra<strong>in</strong>ee programs l<strong>as</strong>t 18 to 24<br />

months and the staff <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> the customers<br />

benefit from the experience of the<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ees, their know-how about <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

requirements and how to organise an efficient<br />

process flow. One of the first attendees<br />

of the junior executive program<br />

w<strong>as</strong> Francesco Fiscella. He changed to<br />

VHB <strong>in</strong> 2007 and thanks to his skills <strong>in</strong><br />

seven different languages he coord<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

a variety of activities <strong>in</strong> Belgium, Cyprus,<br />

Spa<strong>in</strong> and Italy like V<strong>as</strong>sili Toropov from<br />

Russia. One year ago Francesco Fiscella<br />

became manag<strong>in</strong>g director of <strong>VBH</strong> Italy –<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of 2010 V<strong>as</strong>sili Toropov<br />

h<strong>as</strong> been supervis<strong>in</strong>g four warehouses<br />

<strong>in</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong>. There is an endless list of<br />

careers at <strong>VBH</strong> and <strong>in</strong> the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g you<br />

seldom know where the new talents may<br />

made of numerous complex components,”<br />

he expla<strong>in</strong>s. “Timber, glue and<br />

varnish, fitt<strong>in</strong>gs, sealants and gl<strong>as</strong>s, these<br />

are components, which come from all over<br />

the world. Thanks to the CE mark<strong>in</strong>g we<br />

are sure that all of them are <strong>in</strong>spected and<br />

approved.” And thanks to the CE mark<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Max Semler may <strong>as</strong>sure his customers of<br />

the high quality of his products. He suspects<br />

that manufacturers may ignore the<br />

mandatory labell<strong>in</strong>g to avoid efforts and<br />

costs. “<strong>For</strong> the time be<strong>in</strong>g private customer<br />

do not <strong>as</strong>k for a CE mark<strong>in</strong>g, but <strong>in</strong> the<br />

event of a dispute it may be relevant,” tells<br />

virtue of necessity and benefits from the<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts out that he is sell<strong>in</strong>g CE<br />

quality and h<strong>as</strong> the CE label pr<strong>in</strong>t on all<br />

brochures and catalogues.<br />

Possible Consequences<br />

An <strong>in</strong>correct CE labell<strong>in</strong>g bears risks not<br />

only for large-scale w<strong>in</strong>dows manufacturers.<br />

Prof. Christian Niemöller is a specialist<br />

solicitor for build<strong>in</strong>g law and manag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

director of the law office SMNG<br />

Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH, seated<br />

<strong>in</strong> Frankfurt am Ma<strong>in</strong> and specialised <strong>in</strong><br />

build<strong>in</strong>g law questions. In the <strong>in</strong>terview<br />

he gives some specific examples of possible<br />

impacts.<br />

Prof. Niemöller, which consequences do<br />

manufacturers face, who do not mark<br />

products which are subject to the CE labell<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

Concern<strong>in</strong>g the public law (build<strong>in</strong>g law,<br />

federal state build<strong>in</strong>g order) authorities<br />

may enact a decree aga<strong>in</strong>st manufacturers,<br />

especially by means of a ce<strong>as</strong>e and<br />

desist order. The <strong>in</strong>fr<strong>in</strong>gement aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

the mandatory CE labell<strong>in</strong>g may be an<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istrative offence and may be f<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

respectively.<br />

Concern<strong>in</strong>g civil law it still is a question if<br />

a miss<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>in</strong>correct label is an <strong>in</strong>fr<strong>in</strong>gement<br />

of a contract. In this respect customers<br />

<strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> buyers may claim for<br />

compensation.<br />

What do you th<strong>in</strong>k are the most frequent<br />

mistakes?<br />

The most frequent mistake is to disregard<br />

the guidel<strong>in</strong>es for the CE label like<br />

the <strong>in</strong>formation it must conta<strong>in</strong>, where to<br />

affix the label and how it h<strong>as</strong> to look <strong>in</strong><br />

detail, e.g. the manufacturer uses the CE<br />

mark<strong>in</strong>g <strong>as</strong> an advertis<strong>in</strong>g and market<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tool and slightly deviates from the correct<br />

guidel<strong>in</strong>es for the CE mark<strong>in</strong>g. Of course<br />

manufacturers are allowed to affix further<br />

data (e.g. quality marks) anywhere on the<br />

product; but that shouldn’t affect the visibility<br />

and readability of the CE label and it<br />

shouldn’t lead to any misunderstand<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g the CE label.<br />

What about medium-sized and small<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>esses – are there presently any<br />

risks for them?<br />

Of course there are. There are no exceptions<br />

from the mandatory CE mark<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

medium-sized and small enterprises. The<br />

risks are the same.<br />

Meanwhile there are some c<strong>as</strong>es of dispute<br />

<strong>in</strong> the branch. May you give an example?<br />

In one of our law suits a customer refused<br />

to pay an outstand<strong>in</strong>g amount, ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

because the components the supplier<br />

used were not marked with the CE label,<br />

although they were subject to the CE labell<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

In court he states that he, due to<br />

the miss<strong>in</strong>g CE mark<strong>in</strong>g, w<strong>as</strong> not obliged<br />

to settle the outstand<strong>in</strong>g payment. F<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

the dispute could have been solved by an<br />

amicable settlement – however not without<br />

concessions.<br />

<strong>For</strong>mally and only with a proper CE mark<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a manufacturer proves the compliance<br />

with the labell<strong>in</strong>g obligation and may<br />

avert any claims for compensation.<br />

Is the implementation of the mandatory CE<br />

mark<strong>in</strong>g comparable to the RAL <strong>in</strong>itiation<br />

20 years ago? Several manufactures are<br />

still connect<strong>in</strong>g bad memories with RAL.<br />

RAL provides quality labels. The CE label<br />

is mark of conformity. But <strong>in</strong> those days<br />

the problems were the same - customers<br />

refused payment because the <strong>in</strong>stallation<br />

w<strong>as</strong> not accord<strong>in</strong>g to RAL specifications.<br />

Today customers aga<strong>in</strong> may refuse payment<br />

for the re<strong>as</strong>on that a product is not<br />

marked precisely. So my recommendation<br />

is to strictly follow the guidel<strong>in</strong>es for<br />

the CE mark<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Turkey is one of the most attractive<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g markets and an important<br />

bridge between Europe and Asia and<br />

the neighbour<strong>in</strong>g countries <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Middle E<strong>as</strong>t. In the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of 2009<br />

<strong>VBH</strong> Hold<strong>in</strong>g AG became majority<br />

owner with 65 percent of W<strong>in</strong>khaus<br />

A.S. <strong>in</strong> Istanbul.<br />

The entry <strong>in</strong>to the Turkish w<strong>in</strong>dows and<br />

doors market w<strong>as</strong> well-planned – presently<br />

there is no country <strong>in</strong> Europe with<br />

such opportunities for growth. The decision<br />

w<strong>as</strong> made due to the <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
