Thanks to all the work of Frieda Gorman and Pru Borgert, we now have a new
website. If you need any information about our school, it will be on the website.
Please let us know what you think.
What will my son/daughter learn this year?
"What will my child learn this year?" seems like a simple enough question. After all,
isn't there a big book of lessons somewhere that all teachers refer to? Find out more
Anti Racism Contact Officer Information
Please see pages in this Newsletter regarding what we do at Bellingen High School
if ever there is a racial grievance. For any procedure to work, we rely on students
promptly reporting their concerns. Holding it in or ignoring a problem never leads
to a solution. In fact, this can only exacerbate issues between people. The
procedures are clear and fair. Please use them. Our current ARCO is Mr Jones.

Anti Bullying
In this edition of our Newsletter you will see that we have, once again, printed the
Bellingen High School Anti Bullying procedures. If a student is bullied in any way at
school, the procedures are there to safegaurd him/her. Please urge your
sons/daughters to let someone know if they are being bullied.
Until next newsletter.
Cybersafety
Dot Panaretos
Acting Principal
On Tuesday 30th July Year 7
students went to the Library to
participate in a cybersafety activity
with Senior Constable Snow, Sandy
Hamilton (School Counsellor) and
Amy Riddle from Nortec. We
learned about the risks of online
social networks and the
consequences of our actions on the
internet, particularly social
networking sites. We watched a
short clip about safety on the
internet and the risks of using the
internet were explained to us. It was
a very interesting and fun session.
unique and valuable insights
into cybersafety issues
affecting children and
teenagers and the ways
these issues can be
addressed from the
perspective of young people
themselves. Congratulations and thank you to Jasmin, Kristen, Jeremy, Katelyn and
WorldVision 40 Hour Famine
So far Bellingen High School has 21 socially conscious students who have signed up to do
the 40 Hour Famine. This year the money raised goes directly to children in Malawi
where 50% of the children do not get enough food for normal growth.
The students have already raised close to $1000 which is a tremendous effort. If you
google 40 Hour Famine you can go to the Bellingen High School group and sponsor one of
the Bellingen High School students.
The Famine is on 16 th to 18 th August so there is plenty of time for more students to help
this worthy cause.
Bullying
Schools exist in a society where incidents of bullying behaviour may occur. Preventing and
responding to bullying behaviour in learning and working environments is a shared
responsibility of all staff, students, parents, caregivers and members of the wider school
community. Bellingen High school students have all received a copy of a wallet sized card
entitled "What to Do if I am Bullied" and we have a wide variety of strategies and programs
running at Bellingen High school to minimise bullying. Full details of our anti bullying policy
RAS Foundation Rural Scholarships
Are you a student who is passionate about forging a career that will help
strengthen your local rural community? Applications are now open for the Royal
Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) Foundation Rural Scholarships.
Over the last three years the Foundation has awarded 126 Rural Scholarships to
students studying at TAFE, university and pursuing apprenticeships.
RAS Foundation Executive Officer Jocellin Jansson said the scholarships are aimed
at reducing some of the financial challenges rural students often face when it
comes to pursuing their education and training goals.
“In 2013, a record 49 students were awarded a RASF Rural Scholarship. There is
no age limit and students could be studying anything from education, engineering,
health, agriculture, business – and anything in between. We are looking for a
broad cross section of people who want to make a real contribution to the future
of rural NSW,” said Ms Jansson.
Hillston’s Sharni Scott was selected from a pool of over 1,000 applications in 2013.
The 23-year-old is the first member of her family to attend university and is
currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Education.
“The scholarship is making a huge difference in not only my life, but also my
family’s. ‘Thank you’ doesn’t sum up the level of appreciation and gratitude we
have towards the RAS Foundation and my scholarship donor,” said Miss Scott.
The RAS Foundation Rural Scholarships offer $5,000 for full-time-study and
$2,500 for part-time study to assist students from rural areas who in turn are
motivated to help build strong and vibrant communities.
Interested recipients are encouraged to visit www.rasnsw.com.au/programs to
find out more about the RAS Foundation Rural Scholarships and to complete the
online application form.
Automotive Modern Apprenticeship
Program
Vantage Automotive Pty Ltd is a major provider of government funded vocational
learning and outsourced services to major vehicle manufacturers with an
extensive client list across Australia. Applications are now being sought from
students interested in joining the motor trade.

Both males and females from all over Australia are invited to apply for the
Modern Apprenticeship Program and if selected will be offered full time
employment at a dealer close to home and flown to either Sydney, Melbourne or
Brisbane for block training. Flights and accommodation, where eligible, are also
included.
Positions are already available for 2014. Students should apply quickly to ensure
their chance of a full time position.
Students are to check with their Careers Advisor for any further advice or to gain
a better understanding of what Vantage Automotive has to offer, or can visit
www.vantageautomotive.com. Students can also contact Vantage Automotive Pty
Ltd via email (reception@vantageautomotive.com) or phone (8014 8990) if they
have any queries or concerns, so that you can gain knowledge and understanding
of the Program.
If you are interested, the process of enrolment would be to carefully look at the
Manufacturers and Dealerships listed on the website under the “Apply Now’ area –
the Apprenticeship Program leads to full time employment, and you can choose
which Dealer you wish to apply to.
After you are happy with your selection, you are then required to complete the
application form online, attach your current Resume and cover letter. You will
also be required to follow the steps and complete a short online assessment.
The Dealership to which you have applied will then receive the application and
may be in contact to invite you for an interview. During this process, you could
be offered the chance to talk to staff and trainers alongside a number of students
that are currently enrolled on the Modern Apprenticeships Program to discuss
your options and it will also offer an opportunity for you to ask any questions
you may have.
Engineering students construct bike
racks - Free drinks for all!
Yes you read it correctly; Carmel at the Canteen is giving away free
drinks to anyone who rides to school! We want to promote healthy
lifestyles that are good for the environment. No, you can't say it's too
hot. Now that the Year 11 Engineering students have built our school
and the Bellingen Public School two bike racks, you now have the facility
to chain up your bikes safely at the top of the hill outside the Science
block. There are spaces for 24 bikes so dust off the "treadly" and get fit
while coming to school.

Remember, see Carmel when you arrive, show her your bike and get to
choose any drink from the Canteen for free! Yes riding is cool :)
Congratulations should go to the students involved for a huge job in
designing and making four bike racks.
Years 7 and 8 Technology students
keep on producing the goods!
Pictured are some of our fantastic students with the quality projects they
have been producing in the workshop.
A reminder to all parents that your students must wear leather shoes to
school for practical classes, it is also policy that they bring an apron.
Payment of school practical fees is much appreciated and allows your
children to take projects home.

Young Squash Player Excels
Ian Dillon
Head Teacher TAS
At the end of a very busy Term 2, 15 year old,
Trent Timms represented the North Coast in the
NSW Combined High Schools Squash
Championships held in Cardiff. During this
competition Trent was playing against Open boys
and performed extremely well in all his games
helping North Coast to finish third in the
competition. Trent, in fact, played so well he
was selected in the NSWCHS 15 year’s team to
travel to New Zealand later this year.
This is the third Bellingen High School student
this year to be selected to represent the state
in team and individual games. Jess Marks for
cricket, Jonty Neaves for AFL and now Trent
Timms for squash, with three other players narrowly missing out being named
as shadow reserves. These three were Jacob Williamson Leslie for football,
Shelby Mackenzie for football and Justin Alford for hockey. What a wealth
of sporting talent is sitting on the hill overlooking Bellingen, and
congratulations to Trent on this great achievement.

New State Champion!
Karlie Swanson from Bellingen High School is the new All Schools Cross
Country 16 years Age Champion. This
competition includes competitors from
Combined High Schools, Catholic
Schools and Independent High Schools
making her truly the best in the state.
This is a great achievement for Karlie
who has many accomplishments already
to her credit including a 1 st in her age
in the Gold Coast 10km run only a week earlier. Other outstanding
achievements in 2012 included 1 st in the CHS Cross Country and 2 nd in the
Australian Athletics Championships in the 3000m.
Karlie is certainly an athlete with a very successful past but even a bigger
future. These successes come from talent combined with a lot of hard work.
Her commitment to training is excellent and she has overcome some big
setbacks with injury and sickness. Karlie has not let this slow her down and
really deserves this absolutely outstanding result. Photo above shows Karlie
with her gold medal.
Three other competitors from Bellingen High School, Jacob Thorn, Katie
Thorn and Talissa Alford also competed at these Championships and performed
very well.
North Coast Athletics Championships
Eighteen students are representing Bellingen High School at the North Coast
Athletics Championships to be held at Kingscliff today. We look forward to
hearing their great results.
EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CULTURE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS
IMPROVE YOUR LANGUAGE STUDIES AT HOME
In January 2014 Student Exchange Australia New Zealand Ltd will be receiving exchange
students from Europe, Canada, the USA and Latin America. Our new arrivals will live with a
host family and attend a local school for 2-10 months. We are keen to hear from suitable
families who might be interested to host a student. It's a great way for them to learn about a
new country and share an unforgettable experience with the entire family!
Host families come in all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ages. Hosting an exchange
student can be a truly rewarding experience. It allows a family to experience a foreign culture
first hand, be exposed to a new language and pass on a bit of our own culture. They might
even make a friend for life!
If you have any questions about hosting an exchange student or would like to view profiles of
students arriving from other countries, you can either respond to this email or call our office
on 1300 135 331. No obligation.

Bellingen High School Uniform Code
Bellingen High School asks all parents to send their children to school neatly dressed
Establishing and maintaining safe working environments is fundamental to the work of
teachers. Footwear is an important safety item. Good soles provide a sound grip on
the floor preventing accidents from occurring. Footwear can also protect feet from
mechanical or chemical damage. DEC policy clearly states that it is mandatory that
students carrying out practical activities using chemicals or equipment in schools
wear enclosed leather footwear. This includes all Science, Industrial Arts and Home
Economics classes. Our new Bellingen High School commercial stainless steel
kitchen began operation last year and no student will be allowed in without leather
footwear.
Leather shoes can now be purchased for as little as $20. Leather skate shoes and
leather joggers are now readily available trendy options other than the traditional
school shoe.
We urge parents to provide their children with leather upper shoes so that we can
meet our OH&S obligations.
Remember that if students are out of uniform
they are required to bring a note from home
AND/OR see the Deputy Principal for a red
uniform slip.
