Rapid Forest Inventory Data in 3 villages 1 Ban Nakai neua We walked for 30 minutes through dry dipterocarp forest and two hours in evergreen forest along the foot mountains to the south west of village with a group men and women. We had lunch in the forest (huay na kai )and we walked back to village, total six hours . The villagers have showed our team the important areas for collecting non - timber forest products (NTFP ) as well as the village’s forest protected area. When we reached the forest our team has observed and made forest block descriptions. The dry dipterocarp forest (pa kok ) is called “khok sida”. Dominant species are: Dipterocarpus obtusifolius ‘Mai sad’, Pinus spp ‘Mai pek’, Irvingia harmandiana ‘Mai bok’, Anisoptera chochinchinensis, ‘Mai bak’, Cratoxylon formosum ,‘Mai tieo som’. The villagers collect NTFP’s such as : mushroom ‘het’, Curcuma spp ‘Dok ka chieo’and some wildlife.This area has a sandy soil , crown cover of the forest is 20% and soil cover is 20%,The height of the main trees is 25 m , and DBH is 30 cm . The evergreen forest (pa dong dip ) is we visited is callled “ dong houay sod”. This forest is dominated by main species such as: Shorea harmandii, ‘mai khen kha yom’, Dipterocarpus alatus , “Mai nyang”, Parashorea dussaudii , “Mai si” Bambusa tulda ,“Maibong”, Anisoptera cochinchinensis, “Mai bak”, Hopea ferrea ,“Mai khen”. The villagers`collect NTFP’s in this area as: “kisi”, resin of Shorea and Parashorea, “bong” bark, Notaphoebe umbelliflora, “san” Raphis sp., “boun”, Daemonorops schmidtiana, cardamom “mak neng”, Amomum ovoideum, “pidin” Globba spp, “mai sod”, Oxytenanthera pavifolia, mushrooms, “Het”, “kheua hem”, Coscinium usitatum, “chouang hom, Cinnamonum litseaefolium,”, wildlife. This area has a very good dark soil. Crown cover of the forest is 80% and soil cover is 100%, The average height of trees is 30m and DBH is 60 cm , We estimated the density of ”mai si”, Parashorea dussaudi, to be 100 trees per hectare and bamboo 10,000 clumps per hectare (10,000cl/ha) and 1 clump per 35 culms on average. This area is a forest protected area of nakai village. 2 Ban Sop Phen We went across the Nam Theun river, then we walked into the dense forest ( Dong huay ka ek) to the east of the village .We walked inside the forest for have done rapid forest inventories about 4 hours
and walked back again, total six hours has lunch in the village.We were accompanied by a group men only. The evergreen forest is dominated by important species and main species of Non-timber forest products as : Dipterocarpus alatus ( Maiyang ), Mai khai so ( ? ), Anisoptera robusta (Mai bak), Pinus species ( Mai pek ). The villagers collect the following NTFP’s: Daemonorops schmidtiana ( Boun ), Raphis sp.(sane), Oxytenanthera albociliata(Noh mai lai), Amomum ovoideum ( Mak neng ), Shorea resin (Kisi ), Cinnamomum litseaefolium (Mai chuang ), Bong bark ( peuak bong ), Coscinium usitatum (kheua hem ), Calamus spp ( Wai thoon), Mushroom ( Het ), Helminthostachys zeylanica ( Hak tin houng ). The crown cover in this forest was 70%, soil cover 100%; average tree height 40 m., DBH 70 cm., the soil is good, dark. 3 Ban Thalang With the car we drove to the forest along the logging road , about 17 km , west of the village .We walked there and did rapid forest inventories, about 2 hours.And had lunch in the evergreen forest and back again to ban thalang by car . Total duration of the trip: six hours. The evergreen forest is dominated by main species as: Pinus spp “Mai pek”, Parashorea dussaudii “Mai si”, Pometia eximia “mai ching dong” Dipterocarpus alatus “Mai yang”, Hopea odorata “Mai khen” Irvingia harmandiana “Mai bok” Anisoptera cochinchinensis “Mai bak” The villagers collect NTFP’s here such as: Alpinia conchigera “kha pa”, Coscinium usitatum “kheua hem” Bong bark, “peuak bong” Bao(tubers) “hua bao” Cinnamomum litseaefolium “Mai chouang” Daemonorops schmidtiana “Boun” Raphis sp.“san” Livistona cochinchinensis,“Bai kho” Calamus sp“wai thoon” Shorea resin“kisi” Amomum ovoideum “Mak neng” Strychnos spp “kheua ka thok or kheua seng beua”
