The Marauder Sports 

Information Office enters its 23rd year in 

providing the media covering Antelope 

Valley College Marauder Athletics with 

the best possible information. 

The office, headed by the Sports 

Information Director, Glenn Haller, 

is responsible for acting as a liaison 

between AVC’s athletic department and 

the media, compiling and maintaining 

statistics, as well as producing brochures 

and updating the web site for the 

department. 

In 2006 he was honored by the California 

Community College Sports Information 

Association (CCCSIA) as their BRASS 

TOP Award winner. BRASS TOP stands 

for “Bringing Respect And Superior Service To Our Profession” and is 

given annually to an individual who has made a positive impact in the 

field of sports information and through their work advances the cause of 

the community college sports information professional. 

In 2007 he received the Scoop Hudgins Outstanding SID Award 

by the All-American Football Foundation. The award is given by the 

Foundation to those who excel in their efforts to promote the game of 

football. 

He finished his tenure in 2005 as the Past-President of the CCCSIA, 

having served a two- year term as President which began August 2001, 

and was the first Secretary-Publicist for the organization. 

He is also a member of the College Sports Information Directors 

Association, which recognized his 1991 Volleyball Media Guide as the 

second best in the nation. His 1995-96 men’s basketball program was 

named second in the state by the California Community College Public 

Relations Organization. 

In 2002, the office, in conjunction with the Antelope Valley College 

Department of Government and Public Relations, received a Bronze 

Paragon Award for Sports Brochure. This national award is given by the 

National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. The two offices 

also shared a first place in Sports Release awarded by CCPRO. 

In early 2000 he was listed 16th on the Top 20 People Who Shaped 

AVC Athletics list compiled by the Antelope Valley Press. 

Haller became a permanent member of the AVC faculty in early 

2000, and has been granted tenure and the academic title of “professor” 

as well. 

Prior to coming to AVC, Haller headed the Media Relations 

Department for the Fresno Flames, a professional basketball team in the 

World Basketball League. 

Haller began work in the sports information field as a student 

assistant at Fresno State, a position which culminated with him being 

named as Director of Tournament Information for the 1983 NCAA Golf 

Championships. In 1984, he was named Sports Information Director for 

California Bowl IV. 

Haller attended Wm. S. Hart High School and received his bachelor’s 

in journalism (public relations option) in 1983 from Fresno State, in 

addition to his master’s in physical education (athletic administration 

emphasis) from that same school in 1989. He received his juris doctor 

in June of 1998 from 

the Ridgecrest School of 

Law.

A fourth generation Mason, he is currently Master for Old West Lodge 

#813 and is a member of Palmdale #697. 

He has two sons, Austin (23) who is an Eagle Scout received his bachelor’s 

of science degree in geological engineering from Colorado School 

of Mines and is working as a geologist in Colorado and Joseph (20) who 

played football for Sand Creek High School in Colorado Springs, setting 

a school record for fumble recoveries and played with the Marauders 

in 2010 before entering the Army, and a stepson Everett (25), who is 

embarking in a career in commercial real property.

game of the AVC Holiday Tournament and win the Grossmont Tournament. They nearly beat San 

Bernardino Valley 17. at Barstow home for (20-8) their first conference loss and it really going up and down. A loss to Barstow 

in overtime and at Chaffey was followed by a 8. win Chaffey over Mt (23-6) San Jacinto. The end of the regular season was 

just the same. After losing Malika Jackson to an ankle injury Fri. AVC lost to Barstow, then beat Chaffey (a 

win that got them in the playoffs) and finally 9. lost Saddleback to Mt. San (19-9) Jacinto. For more information about the Marauders,

BARRY GREEN: Barry Green is now 35-17 in his second season as head coach Fri. of the Marauders. He spent 23 years as a 

Marauder assistant coach, and was in his fourth 4. East with LA the women’s (22-6) basketball squad before being elevated, 

moving over after the retirement of Newton Chelette as men’s coach. Green was the men’s assistant coach 

for 18 years.

Marauders in the Playoffs 

The Marauders have made the playoffs in 16 of their 28 seasons. During that time AVC is 12-19 in the postseason. The 2010-11 season marked the 

11th straight season the Marauders made the playoffs, the longest string in the program’s history.

but Brittani Jefferson pulled down 17 rebounds. It marked 

the end to a seven game home playoff winning streak. 

Fri., Feb. 26, 2010 9 8 Grossmont El Cajon L 56-69 Maybe it was the long trip. Maybe it was AVC thought it 

had a bad seed. Maybed it was the face that the Griffins 

were hosting their first-ever home playoff game. Whatever, 

Grossmont jumped on the Marauders and never looked 

back. Brandi Dawson led AVC with 12 poitns. 

Fri., Mar. 13, 2009 3S 2N SJ Delta Fresno L 56-60 In their second trip into the Elite Eight the Maarauders 

faced a team they had beat the Mustangs by 29 earlier in 

the season, but in this game committed a season high 20 

turnovers. State Player of the Year Florida Siaosi hit her 

only three as a Marauder to close the gap to two in the 

last minute, but Delta was able to hold on to eliminate the 

Marauders. 

Sat., Mar. 7, 2009 3 11 CYPRESS MARAUDER GYM W 74-62 Florida Siaosi tied the Marauder game record pulling down 

29 rebounds as AVC overcame a four point halftime deficit 

to advance to the Elite Eight for just the second time. 

Fri., Feb. 27, 2009 3 14 ORANGE COAST MARAUDER GYM W 64-41 AVC had lost to the Pirates in the regular season, but the 

Marauders would have none of that at home as they eliminated 

the Pirtes from the playoffs for the second staight 

season. It was the fewest points a Marauder team had 

allowed in the playoffs. 

Sat., Mar. 8, 2008 17 9 Cerritos Cerritos L 30-55 AVC had set a record for lowest score in a half and game,

overtime. Despite being down 10 with 3:58 in regulation 

and five with 1:30 in overtime, AVC figures a way to move

Barry Green is 

in his second season 

as the head 

women’s basketball 

coach havin taken 

over in 2010-11 in 

the 11th game of the 

season after it was 

decided that John 

Taylor, who had began 

the season as 

both the men’s and 

women’s head basketball coach would coach just 

the men. 

He currently has a record of 35-18 and has had 

both his teams make playoffs. 

He enters his 23rd season as Marauder coach, 

his fourth with the women’s basketball squad, 

moving over after the retirement of Newton 

Chelette as men’s coach. Green was the men’s 

assistant coach for 18 years. 

Green came to AVC from CSU Bakersfield, 

where he was a graduate assistant coach for the 

basketball team. 

A graduate of Merced High School, Green 

was the team’s most valuable player as well as 

the Central California Conference’s MVP. He 

also played football and baseball for the Bears. 

Green played at Columbia College in Sonora 

for one year, winning Central Valley Conference 

honorable mention honors. 

He then moved to Eastern Montana, 

where he played for three years and 

received his bachelor’s in physical 

education. He was named the team’s 

most valuable player in his senior year 

and was a first team All-Great Northwest 

Conference selection. He was a 

second team selection in his sophomore 

and junior seasons. He received

The Green Era 

his master’s degree in physical education from 

Azusa Pacific. 

In 2000, he became a permanent member of 

the AVC faculty, was granted tenure and was 

named the Marauder Women’s Tennis team head 

coach. 

Green spent one season as head coach of the 

boys’ team at Trona High School, coming away 

with a 17-6 record. 

Green and his wife, Julie, reside in Lancaster 

with their daughter, Bailey, and son, Julian.

McCrimmon played five years in the 

WNBA with the LA Sparks and the Hous-

AVC ‘10-11: Named All-Glendale Tournament…hit for four threes in 

loss to Moorpark…scored five points in the last 11 seconds against Mt. 

San Jacinto to turn a three point deficit into an AVC win. 

AVC ‘11-12: Hit for a career high 19 points and five threes against 

Reedley…upped it to 22 the next game against LA Valley…named All- 

Moorpark and All-Grossmont Tournament…had eight assists against 

Cerro Coso...sat out the last three games with an ankle injury.

WHAT IS A MARAUDER? -- And other Frequently Asked Questions 

WHAT IS A MARAUDER? 

A marauder is one who marauds (I know, the Language Arts folks 

are rightly peeved by now, read on). The term has been attached to 

several peoples over the years, but especially the Marauding Hordes 

and Bedouin Marauders. Both 

groups attacked from the north and 

looted and pillaged (a good definition 

of maraud) whatever civilization 

they might run into. Since the 

Marauding Hordes came from 

the northern Asian areas and the 

Bedouin Marauders were the dwellers 

of the northern African deserts, 

AVC has decided to honor those of 

the desert nature, while Compton 

College (Tartars) decided to identify 

themselves with those of the Asian 

group. 

WHY IS IT ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE’S 

MASCOT? 

The Marauder was selected as the mascot for Antelope Valley College 

some time during the 1938-39 academic year. However, the exact 

origins of the mascot and its development over the years have apparently 

been lost beneath the dust of the years. 

“I’ll be damned if I can understand now or remember how we came 

up with the name,” says Walt Primmer, a former athlete from AVC’s 

class of 1940. Other college graduates from that time were equally at a 

loss as to the origins of the name. 

The earliest written mention of Marauders that can be located 

by researchers is from the 1939 Antelope Valley High School Yucca 

yearbook. The yearbook, which included a special section for what was 

then known as Antelope Valley Junior College, made reference to the 

“Maroon Marauders.” Previously, college students who shared facilities 

with the high school were simply referred to as “JCs” in the Yucca 

yearbooks. 

One thing for certain is that the Marauder image certainly fit in well 

with their namesakes - the marauding desert dwellers of Africa and Asia 

from earlier times. Some of the students from the early days of Antelope 

Valley College must have felt like marauders as they left their homes in 

distant reaches of the region to live in dorms at the college. 

At the time the name “Maroon Marauders” surfaced, so did a 

“Maroon Marauders” emblem that appeared on some sweaters ordered 

by the mother of student Jack Reynolds, according to Primmer. The 

emblem consisted of a large circle with a scimitar - a curved saber used 

mostly by Turks and Arabs - running through the center of the circle. 

The college’s initials of “A.V.J.C.” appeared on the scimitar. 

The Marauder name quite possibly served as motivation for a play 

written and produced by the college students in 1940. The play, “A 

Knight in Baghdad,” also known as “Harem Scarem” was described as 

an original musical comedy. Photos from the play show one performer 

in Middle Eastern dress and carrying a scimitar. Another performer was 

dressed in armor, thus the play actually had a “knight, to fit in with the 

title. 

WHAT ARE THE SCHOOL’S COLORS? HOW DID 

AVC COME BY THEM? 

Maroon and Silver. As discussed above, the Marauders were once 

known as “Maroon Marauders,” though through the years, “maroon” was 

dropped from “marauders.” Maroon remains one of the school’s colors, 

along with silver. Over the years gold has been added to the color 

scheme, but that has been phased out over the last 10 years. White and 

black are now used to help accent the maroon and silver. 

OK, IF THE MARAUDER AT AVC IS FROM THE 

DESERT, WHY DOES THE MARAUDER MASCOT 

THAT DANCES WITH THE CHEERLEADERS LOOK 

LIKE JACK SPARROW? 

A mascot was eventually developed. What is believed to be the 

original official Marauder was depicted as a chubby-cheeked, comic 

character with a handlebar moustache and goatee. The character was 

dressed in baggy pants and pointed-toe shoes, like one would envision a 

genie. The Marauder also had a turban with a scimitar running through 

it, in the same way an old cowboy would wear a hat with an arrow running 

through it. 

Attempts had been made to upgrade and toughen the Marauder 

mascot image for more than 10 years before 1990. At least one student 

contest was held to develop a new mascot and various artists have left 

their mark in coming up with new Marauders. However, some have lost 

sight of the original desert dweller in favor of a swashbuckling high seas 

marauding pirate. Because of that, AVC’s mascot was represented first 

as a duck, then a parrot and now -- the popular Jack Sparrow. 

WHAT IS THIS “NEW” LOGO? 

It’s not a logo at all. Athletic departments require different looks for 

different purposes. The circular trademarked logo developed 15 years 

ago (top left on this page) remains the Marauder logo. But like most 

athletic departments, AVC 

has another “identifier” -- in 

this case AVC being crossed 

by a scimitar -- which is used 

to represent the department 

when the logo does not make 

graphic sense. 

ARE THE WOMEN’S TEAMS CALLED 

“LADY MARAUDERS?” 

No. Marauder Athletics chooses to differentiate only by sport, not 

by sex. Therefore, Marauder Athletics uses the nomenclature “Marauder” 

before any of their sports (i.e. Marauder Football, Marauder Soccer, Marauder 

Women’s Basketball). If Marauder Athletics hosts the same sport 

for both sexes, the correct use is to use the genderal description before the 

sport (i.e. Marauder Men’s Track, Marauder Women’s Track). If only one 

sex is offered participation in a sport, the genderal description is dropped 

(i.e. Marauder Volleyball, Marauder Soccer, Marauder Baseball). AVC’s 

logo image is unique in that it is a silhouette, thus it can be identified with 

either men or women athletic teams. The old Marauder was strictly seen 

as a male figure, which was acceptable 40 years ago when there were no 

women athletic teams at the college.

of Los Angeles, the Antelope Valley 

sprawls over 1000 square miles of 

the part of the Mojave that is called 

the “High Desert,” and is home to 

over 350,000 people.

SR-71, F117, B1 and B2 airplanes, 

the Lockheed “Skunkworks” and 

Edwards Air Force Base, home of 

the first supersonic flight, and various 

other aeronautical firsts and 

records, as partially chronicled in 

“The Right Stuff”; a major aviation 

research and testing center. 

It is also home of the California 

Poppy Reserve, where the City of 

Lancaster celebrates its Poppy 

Festival every April, and the highly 

eclectic and eccentric, yet fascinating 

AV Indian Museum. 

In recent years the Antelope Valley 

has become a major “location” 

shooting area for major motion 

pictures and television shows, including 

The Terminator and Lethal 

Weapon series of movies and Star 

Trek television series.

community college in California.

important element of the definition depends on the personal
