2011 MARAUDER FOOTBALL
Perry Jehlicka (pronounced
Jah-lek-ah) became
the Marauders' ninth head
football coach in 61 years in
2007, taking over for Brent
Carder, who retired after 37
years as the Marauders' head
coach and inheriting a program
that had lost 26 straight
games.
But, in Jehlicka's 12
years as a football coach, he
has had more than a hand in
turning around losing football
programs.
At AVC, the Marauders
won nine straight games and
were inches from a perfect
regular season in his first
season as a head coach, with
2007 and 2008
Conference Coach of
the Year
his team winning the Foothill Conference title for the first time
since 1987 and making the playoffs for the first time since 1974.
Jehlicka was named Foothill Conference Coach of the Year,
the first Marauder coach to win the honor since 1987 as well as
the George Sekul Community College Coach Award from the
All-American Football Foundation.
His Marauder teams have won three straight conference titles
for the first time since 1975.
Other turnarounds he had a hand in included West Virginia
University Institute of Technology, he was the defensive coordinator
as well as recruiting coordinator for a Golden Bear
team that had recently ended a 32-game losing streak. In those
two years, 2001 and 2002, the Golden Bears picked up 11 wins
-- more than the other Golden Bear teams from 1991 to 2006
combined. In 2002, WVUT was 6-5, the first winning season in
12 years and was ranked in the NCAA Northeast Region for the
first time in school history.
He brought to AVC 11 years of coaching, recruiting, financial
aid and academic advising experience at the NCAA Division
I-AA, II and III levels, as well as at the California Community
College level at Reedley College.
At Tusculum College in Greenville, TN, where he was director
of football operations and secondary coach, the Pioneers
went from 3-7 in 2005 to 6-5 in 2006 and had the second best
rush defense in the nation. As the director of football operations,
Jehlicka was in charge of coordinating the team’s travel, NCAA
compliance and was the liaison with the college’s admissions and
financial aid departments.
He moved to Tusculum following two seasons as defensive
coordinator and linebacker coach at the University
of Charleston in West Virginia. The Golden Eagles,
an NCAA II school, finished as the No. 2 ranking
pass defensive team in the West Virginia Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference, while improving a team
scoring defense over 12 points per game from the
previous year. He was also the Golden Eagles' recruiting
coordinator, which -- added to West Virginia
Institute of Technology and Tusculum recruiting
duties -- gives him extensive experience in high
school recruiting in California, Florida, Tennessee,
Alaska, Idaho, North Dakota, Montana, Delaware,
Arkansas and North and South Carolina.
When Dean Hood, the defensive coordinator
at Wake Forest, was asked if he would consider
Jehlicka for a full time position he answered flatly
Third Season - 23-17
The Jehlicka Era
Perry
JEHLICA
"No. I would hire him." The Demon Deacons were the No. 15
team in the country last season, losing to No. 5 Louisville in the
Orange Bowl.
Jehlicka coached in 2000 at Capital University, where he
was linebacker coach and also held the title of assistant athletic
director. His defense led the Ohio Athletic Conference with 35
turnovers forced and 47 sacks, while improving the team’s scoring
defense by a dozen points per game.
From 1998-2000, he was the linebacker coach and academic
coordinator at Reedley College. The Tigers, in those three seasons,
were beginning to emerge as a northern California powerhouse
and would win the national and state title in 2002.
His first coaching stint was as a defensive restricted earnings
coach at Eastern Kentucky University from 1996-97. The 1997
EKU squad went 8-4 and won the Ohio Valley Conference title,
while advancing to the NCAA playoffs.
The Colonels -- with Jehlicka
coaching the safeties -- ranked sixth
nationally in pass efficiency defense
and seventh in scoring defense.
The 1996 squad finished as OVC
runner-up while ranking sixth in
net punting. The head coach for
the Colonels was Roy Kidd, who
retired the winningest NCAA Div.
I-AA coach of all time with a 315-
123-8 record.
Jehlicka played his collegiate
career at Nevada, Las Vegas where
he was a four-year letterman as a
defensive back. His junior squad
was the 1994 Big West Conference
Champion, while also winning the
Las Vegas Bowl. That team was
inducted into the UNLV Hall of
Fame in 2010.
He holds a bachelor’s degree
from UNLV in 1996 and earned his master’s degree from Eastern
Kentucky in 1997. He is a full-time instructor for physical education
and athletics at AVC.
He is the son of Rodger and Liz Jehlicka. His father retired
as athletic director at the University of Illinois-Springfield and is
currently a Marauder coach.
WATTS
Joe Watts is entering
his 26th season
coaching Marauder
Football.
Watts played
quarterback and
defensive back in
the 1972 and 1973
seasons. In fact, Watts
was instrumental in a
game that was called
“the turning point of
the Brent Carder era.”
In 1973, against West
Hills, Watts took over
at quarterback with
the Marauders behind
28-14. AVC went on
to take the 29-28 win and, ultimately, the conference
title.
After playing for the Marauders, Watts, a graduate
of Antelope Valley High School, quarterbacked
Claremont in 1974 and 1975.
Watts returned to AVC as an assistant coach
in 1976 then moved over to Paraclete in 1978.
Becoming the Spirits’ head coach in 1979, Watts’
teams won Desert Inyo League titles in 1985 and
1986.
Watts, who received his master’s of education
(physical education emphasis) from Azusa Pacific in
1991, was also the Marauder baseball coach for eight
years.
Watts has four
children: Robert, who
played football on
scholarship for Utah
State and is now the
head football coach
for Littlerock High
School, 29; Andrew,
who played two
years for AVC then
played football and
graduated from Lane
Mike Martinez
enters his 22nd season
with the Marauders,
his third year with the
defensive line, and his
26th as a coach.
Prior to coming to
AVC in 1990, Martinez
worked at preparing
the offensive lines
for American Pacific
rival East Los Angeles
College in 1988 and
1989.
Before working with
the Huskies, Martinez
was the offensive line
coach at Huntington Park High School in 1986 and 1987.
In 1985, Martinez was the assistant offensive line coach for
Western New Mexico University.
Martinez played two years for the ELAC Huskies, 1978
and 1982. The years in between he spent as a missionary
in Guatemala for the LDS church. In 1982, he was named
All-Southern California Conference on the offensive line.
After East LA, Martinez played two seasons with Western
New Mexico.
A 1978 graduate of Bell High School where he was
on the varsity football team for three years, Martinez
received his associate’s in social science (politcal science
minor) at East LA in 1983, his bachelor’s in the same
fields at Western New Mexico (with an additional history
minor) and his master’s
in education (physical
education emphasis)
from Azusa Pacific
University in 1991.
Martinez and his wife
of 24 years, Debbie have
Yet another former
Marauder player to go
from player to coach is
Justin (JJ) Holtfreter
who returns to the Marauder
coaching staff
after four years.
In his tenure away
from AVC he was the
offnisive coordinator
for Lancaster High
School.
Origianlly, Holtfreter
came to AVC in 2005
from Highland High
School where he was
the offensive coordinator.
The year previously he was the graduate assistant at
Sacred Heart in Fairfield, CT.
A graduate of Quartz Hill High School, Holtfreter
passed for over 1000 yards as a senior for the Rebels
and started as defensive end in the High Desert Football
Coaches Association All-Star Game. At AVC he
played quarterback only. In his first start he was three
for four and had 52 yards against Grossmont in the
first quarter when a torn ACL put him out the rest of
the season. In 1999, Holtfreter started six games, but
AVC rotated their quarterbacks often every series that
season. Still, Holtfreter had two top games -- the first
against Canyons where he passed for 222 yards and a
touchdown, and then against Desert where he was 13
for 21 for 155 yards and two TDs.
He moved on to Sacred Heart, where in two years he
quarterbacked the Pioneers to a 21-1 record, and was
11-0 in 2001 as a senior, winning the Div. I AA Mid-
Major National Championship. As a senior he was
named second team All-Northeastern Conference as
quarterback, but also Div. I AA Mid-Major Offensive
Back of the Year and first team Div. I AA Mid-Major
All-America. Holtfreter received his bachelor’s of
science in business management from Sacred Heart in
2001 and his master’s of education in 2003 and currently
teaches special education at Pete Knight High
School.
Holtfreter and his wife Barbara have two sons, Carston
coaching career with
this assignment.
He was the Marauders’
MVP in 2002 after
setting records for season
and career receptions
as well as season
and career receptions
yards. He is still the
only Marauder to have over 1000 reception yards in a
season.
Wright then moved on under a full scholarship to
Utah where he played for two Ute teams which went
22-2 in his two seasons. The 2003 team won the Liberty
Rodger
JEHLICKA
Dr. Rodger Jehlicka joins the Marauders
after having retired this summer
as Director of Athletics at the
University of Illinois at Springfield, a
position he had held since December
of 2005. Academically, he initiated
the UIS Director of Athletics Honor
Roll, which recognizes student-athletes
who earn a 3.0 GPA or higher,
during the fall or spring semester.
Athletically, both men’s and
women’s golf as well as women’s
soccer were added as varsity sports
in the fall of 2007, and baseball
began in the last year of his tenure.
Perhaps Dr. Jehlica’s biggest
achievement at UIS has been
helping guide the school through its
transition into the NCAA as an active
Division II member and gaining
membership into the Great Lakes
Valley Conference (GLVC).
Prior to going to UIS, Dr.
Jehlicka was an Associate Director
of Athletics at Eastern Illinois
University from August 1999 to
December, 2005. From 1995 to 1999, Dr. Jehlicka was the Director of Athletics at
Adams State College in Alamosa, CO. Under his leadership, Adams State College won
the 1998-1999 NACDA Sears Director’s Cup by having the best overall NCAA Division
II Athletic program based on finishes in NCAA Division II National Championships
(otherwise know as the National Champion of the NCAA Division II National
Championships).
Along with serving as the Director of Athletics at Adams State College, Dr. Jehlicka
was the head wrestling coach from 1982-1999, as well as an assistant football coach
from 1982-87, and an Associate Professor in the Health, Physical Education and
Recreation Department. Dr. Jehlicka’s wrestling team at Adams State College won nine
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles, two NCAA West Regional Titles, 10 Top
Ten finishes at the National Tournament, and one National Championship as a team.
He has the most wins among wresting coaches in the history of the sport at Adams
State College. Dr. Jehlicka also coached 69 individual All-American wrestlers, six
individual National Champions, eight individual National Runners-up and 16 Academic
All-Americans. He was honored as Coach of the Year 11 times, twice as NCAA West
Regional Coach of the Year, and in 1990, he was named NAIA National Wrestling
Coach of the Year. Dr. Jehlicka coached for USA Wrestling at three different age groups
at the World Championships. He served two terms on the Board of Directors for USA
Wrestling, which is the national governing body.
Dr. Jehlicka has been inducted into four athletic Hall of Fames. In 1996, he was
inducted into the NAIA Wrestling Hall of Fame as a coach; in 1998 he was inducted
into the Winona State University Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete; in 2005 he was
WEBB
Justin Webb is entering
his 12th season as
the Marauders’ athletic
equipment assistant and
his eighth as coordinator
of football operations.
As the coordinator
of football operations, it
is Webb’s job to act as a
liaison for such nonfield
necessities as marketing,
transportation
and team dining. He
also assists in eligibility,
student-athlete job
placement and various
other tasks.
Webb was the
equipment manager at
LA Pierce College in 1993, before taking over the Marauder
position.
A graduate of Grant High School, where he played
on the offensive and defensive line for the Lancers, Webb
continued his education at LA Pierce. He played defensive
line for the 1991 edition of the Brahmas, which
played in a post-season bowl game. He then switched
sides of the ball to play on the offensive line the next
season.
After spending two years in the security industry,
Webb returned to athletics as defensive line coach for LA
Pierce in 1996. He then became the offensive line coach
for then Brahma coach Bill Norton. Both left the squad
after the 1998 season. In 1999, while Norton became an
assistant coach at AVC, Webb moved on to LA Valley as
the defensive end coach and recruiting coordinator.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal
studies from Cal State Bakersfield
in 2009 and a Master of
Science degree in physical
education from Azusa Pacific
University in 2011.
In 2003, Webb took on
the role of “family man,” and
cared for and was guardian
for his sister Lauren Brady
(23) who graduated from the
University of Hawai’i and his
brother Larry Brady Jr. (25)
who played for the Marauders
in 2005 and is the father of two
