letter from the publisher
August/September 2011
School is getting ready to start and area children will be donning their back to school clothes and new
backpacks. The long hot days will soon give way to fall and the start of the next polo season and other area
festivities and events. Dennard’s will celebrate their second anniversary for their Pilot Point location and you
are invited to come out to eat, compete and shop. Good Samaritan Village-Denton, invites the community
out to participate in the celebration and ribbon cutting for their new addition. You and your dog will have a
barking good time at the third annual Woofstock at Little Elm Park while raising much needed funds to help
pets that have been abandoned. Aubrey’s 26th Annual Peanut Festival is a great time for the entire family. It
offers a day full of games, food and a grand, hometown parade.
Another area happening that is easy on the back to school budget is the 12th Annual Arts, Antiques & Autos
on the square in Denton. It offers a variety of activities and events to entertain the entire family. Antique enthusiasts can even
attend lectures to learn more about collecting. Another local event that is just around the corner is the amazing Bonnie and Clyde
Festival in Pilot Point, TX. Bruce Thomas and several volunteers are hard at work preparing for this popular event.
As the weather cools polo will start back up. This will be the fourth year for 380Guide to sponsor the 380Guide Community Cup
Challenge at Prestonwood Polo & Country Club in order to help raise money and awareness for an area not for profit organization.
This October come out and cheer your local team to victory and then return on October 22, 2011 for Polo on the Midway.
The proceeds from this event will stay in Denton County to help our area children in need. In addition to the polo match, families
can enjoy carnival games, bounce houses, shopping in the arts & crafts market, silent auction, a Champaign divot stomp and
much more. Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch with the beverages of their choice. A concession stand will be available
to guests. If you would like to volunteer for this event and help children in need please give us a call and we will get you in
touch with the Ladies’ Polo Auxiliary of Texas.
Making a
difference in the
lives of abused and
neglected children
Page
five
Lauren Barker, M.S.
Last year 66,897 Texas children were confirmed as victims
of abuse or neglect by Child Protective Services. Abandoned
or mistreated by the very people who were supposed to care for
them, many of these children subsequently entered a foster care
system that is overburdened and significantly underfunded.
In Denton County alone, 476 children were brought into state
care because their homes were simply not a safe place to be.
The future of many of these children is uncertain. For many of
them, budget cuts and reductions in social services threaten to
pull the rug out from underneath an already shaky existence.
While the media focuses on corporate earnings, consumer
credit, and the price of oil, the plight of the most vulnerable
members of our community - children who have suffered maltreatment
– goes largely unnoticed. Court Appointed Special
Advocates (CASA) seeks to change this.
In Denton County, the local CASA program’s staff and Board
of Directors, along with more than 100 community volunteers,
are working to provide a voice for the abused and neglected
children of our community. Established in 1992, CASA of Denton
County recruits, trains and supervises volunteers to serve
as child advocates in the district court system. In the 19 years
since the agency first opened its doors, CASA has provided
court advocacy services for nearly 3,500 children. CASA volunteers
investigate and monitor a child’s situation while he or
she is in foster care and, ultimately, make a recommendation
to the court as to what permanent living arrangement would
be best for the child.
The services that CASA provides take on a newfound importance
during times of economic uncertainty, when so many
social services agencies are scaling back. Child victims of abuse
and neglect need not be made victims again by a system that is
unprepared to properly care for them.
CASA volunteers work to make a difference in the lives of
abused and neglected children by offering them a sense of
consistency and stability at a time of great turmoil and upheaval.
They ensure that the child’s best interests are a priority,
requesting additional medical, educational and other services
when necessary, and providing support when the children need
it most. They work to provide children with the best possible
chance at a bright future in a safe, loving home.
It doesn’t take years of training or an advanced degree to become
a CASA volunteer. All it takes is a passion for helping
children, and a commitment to see a child’s case through to
completion – usually about a year’s time. CASA volunteers
come from all walks of life, and from a variety of educational,
professional, and cultural backgrounds. Many work full-time
and have families of their own. Some have an hour a week to
devote to their CASA volunteer work, others have more. They
are all ordinary people, living ordinary lives - but their choice
to donate their time to CASA children makes them extraordinary.
You can give a child a voice, and make
a lifelong difference in the process.
Become a CASA volunteer, donate to
your local CASA program, or tell others
about CASA’s work with abused
and neglected children. Visit www.
Gov. Perry: Texas Continues to Lead the Nation in
Energy Production Ceremonially signs House Bill 3328
and Senate Bills 20 and 527
Gov. Rick Perry ceremonially signed House Bill 3328 and
Senate Bills 20 and 527, which will increase transparency in
energy production and enable Texas to remain the nation’s
energy leader. The governor was joined by Reps. Jim Keffer,
Tan Parker and others for the signing ceremony. “Texas’ energy
sector continues to fuel the nation by continuing to develop
traditional energy sources, cleaning our air and making tomorrow’s
technologies more viable,” Gov. Perry said. “These
bills will help us stay on top by expanding our use of Texas
sources of fuel, while addressing public concern about air and
groundwater quality.” HB 3328, the first of its kind in the nation,
requires well operators to disclose chemicals used during
the hydraulic fracturing process. The bill addresses public concern
by providing a more transparent process, which will help
Texas continue to protect its resources, while allowing oil and
gas companies to continue safely using the fracturing process
in the state, as they have for years.
“HB 3328 will provide much-needed transparency to an industry
practice that is not commonly understood, but is playing a
vital role in our energy future and economy,” Rep. Keffer said.
“I applaud Governor Perry’s support for this bill. Once again,
Texas is leading the nation in effective, common-sense regulation
of energy development.”
SB 20 creates incentives for heavy-duty natural gas vehicles and
natural gas fueling infrastructure; and SB 527 provides funding
for additional air monitoring in the Barnett Shale region.
10 www.380Guide.com
“Many of us have worked tirelessly for years to strike the right
balance between protecting our public health and wellbeing,
while allowing North Texas to reap the tremendous economic
benefits that our natural resources provide,” Rep. Parker said.
“This bill package finds the right balance by increasing transparency,
and it gives us more tools to carefully monitor and
quickly address any potential effects that gas drilling may have
on our environment, while helping to achieve American energy
independence.”
“As I have said before, a strong economy does not need to come
at the cost of the environment, and Texas has shown that to be
true,” Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Chairman
Bryan Shaw said. “A clean environment and strong economy
are not mutually exclusive, but mutually beneficial and necessary.”
Texas continues to lead the nation in oil and gas exploration
and production, generating nearly one-third of all domestic
natural gas, and containing one-fourth of all U.S. oil reserves
and refining capacity. Texas has also decreased ozone levels by
27 percent from 2000 to 2009, more than any other state in the
nation, and improved NOx emissions by nearly 58 percent.
You can just keep it for yourself!
All-new for 2012, the ground-breaking Passat presents a
more spacious cabin in its luxurious interior while remaining
affordable. The Passat maintains the superb German engineering
that auto consumers expect from Volkswagen. Now built
in the U.S.A in an all-new, state of the art, assembly plant in
Chattanooga, Tennessee, this mid-sized sedan has much to offer.
The 2012 debuts new features including a TDI Clean Diesel
engine option, and an ICRS (Integrated Crash Response System).
Available on some models, consumers can add remote
start and the Fender Premium Audio System, which offers a
nine-speaker sound system.
The manufacturers estimate on fuel economy sweetens the
overall attractiveness of the Passat with the 2.5L, 170-hp engine
getting 31 mpg highway and 573 miles/tank. The 2.0L TDI
Clean Diesel engine brags 43 mpg highway and a whopping
795 miles/tank while the 3.6L 280-hp engine achieves 28 mpg
highway and 518 miles/tank. If the gas mileage does not put
your pocketbook at ease, the no charge, carefree maintenance
for three years or 36,000 miles sure will. Volkswagen’s innovative
DSG transmission makes it an ecologically conscious and
fun ride.
The warranty is amazing with a 12-year/unlimited mileage
limited warranty against corrosion perforation; 5- year/60,000-
mile power train limited warranty; 3-year/36,000-mile New
including your college student. If you decide not to keep this
vehicle for yourself, and you consider the 2012 VW Passat for
your college student to take back and forth to school, the last
thing they may be considering is the mileage and warranty.
College kids want to know this is a sweet ride. With some awesome
tech in place, it is a cool ride down the highway, offering
several entertainment packages, Sirius satellite radio and HD
radio, media device interface and navigation systems.
Denton Main Street celebrates the
12th Annual Arts, Antiques
& Autos
Christine Gossett
The classic, hot rod and custom cars, trucks and motorcycles
are the main attraction in downtown Denton this September
at the Denton Main Street Association’s (DMSA) Arts,
Antiques & Autos event Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m., around the historic Denton County Courthouse-on-the-
Square, 110 W. Hickory Street.
Fascinating cars and motorcycles, fine arts/crafts and antiques,
food and fun make this festival one of downtown Denton’s
most popular events. This fall festival showcases more than
200 cars, trucks and motorcycles from the past and present
whose owners are competing for the coveted Best of Show
award. Festival-goers can also peruse vendor booths with
one-of-a-kind pieces while seeing some live artists’ and crafters’
demonstrations. The antique collector, or those aspiring
to start, can learn some fast facts about a special antique with
an appraisal or by attending one of four lectures. Hands-on
crafts and games keep the kids busy while area bands playing
live music, including Chris Watson playing Texas Blues Rock,
entertain the crowd all day long. The fall festival atmosphere
is complete with food from numerous downtown eateries and
vendors.
“Our historic downtown is authentic and it cannot be duplicated.
This event highlights downtown in a unique way that
truly captures the treasures of Denton’s past and present,” said
Larry Parker, DMSA president.
New this year are lectures offering some tips, tools and techniques
for the avid antiques collector, or a novice who wants
to gather more tidbits for their hobby. Lectures will be given
with topics including: a “how to” on Estate Sales by John Bennett;
Antique Diamonds by Joe Amyx; and “Vintage Purses”
and “Tips, Tools and Techniques: Everything You Always
For the third year the event will feature “Preview Night” where
History and Progress of the
Good Samaritan
Society Denton
Village
In 1922, the Reverend August Hoeger was serving as a
pastor in Arthur, North Dakota. A fellow pastor put a
challenge in the church newsletter for readers to donate two
pennies to finance treatment for a young boy with polio.
Money flowed in and a surplus of $2000.00 remained.
Reverend Hoeger suggested that this money be used to
help other individuals with disabilities and to that end The
Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society was formed.
That was almost 89 years ago. The Society is now the largest
not-for-profit provider of senior housing and services in
the nation.
11:00 am, a barbeque lunch, and a ribbon cutting for the
expansion of the rehab therapies department. For more
information, contact Virginia McDaniel at 940-383-6347.
A group of foresighted individuals who recognized the
need for retirement housing in this community asked the
Good Samaritan Society to come to Denton. In 1973, a
community fund drive, chaired by Tom Harpool, raised
the funds to purchase the land at 2500 Hinkle Drive. The
establishment of the Good Samaritan Society-Denton
Villiage was a result of the hard work of well-known community
members such as Reverend Fred Cassell, Frank Hall,
Tom Harpool, Tom Noel, and others who were part of the
original planning committee. Frank Hall and Tom Noel
later resided at Denton Village and continued to lend their
leadership there.
Denton Village began service in 1976. Caring for people is
at the heart of the mission. As stated in the vision statement,
the goal is to provide an atmosphere where people
feel loved, valued and at peace.
The Good Samaritian-Denton Village invites the public to
celebrate the 35th anniversary on September 30, 2011 from
10-2 PM. Festivities include the Mayors proclamation at
Local Ballerina Hannah Schoendorf
Now at Harid by Hugh Nini
Conservatory Ballet
In January of this year 15-year-old Denton Ballet Academy student Hannah
Schoendorf moved to Boca Raton, Florida to accept a place in the prestigious
Harid Conservatory of Ballet on full scholarship. She is one of only 45 students
in the world to have that distinction. Yes, Harid Conservatory accepts students
from all over the world and only 45 at that. Her roommate is from Japan. Her
classmates come from China, South America, Cuba, and other countries from
around the world. She is an exceptional student at an exceptional institution.
Hannah has been a student at the Denton Ballet Academy under the instruction of
Hugh Nini for 11 years. Harid was calling in September, but Hannah wanted one
more semester with her hometown teacher before she took the plunge.
“Hannah was remarkable as a ballet student from the beginning. She soaks up instruction
like a sponge and has a work ethic as strong as any student I’ve ever taught. I always
thought that she might end up somewhere like Harid,” says Nini.
“My first day I was nervous, I got through my first class and then it was off to rehearsal with a
really famous guest choreographer who was being brought in by Harid to create a new piece for the
graduating students. Even though I’m only a sophomore, I was included in the rehearsal.”
The guest choreographer, Mark Godden, has some
pretty astonishing credentials. He won a gold medal at
the “Olympics” of ballet, the Varna International Ballet
Competition, the most prestigious in the world. He also
won a Silver Medal at the Helsinki International Ballet
Competition and numerous other awards around the globe.
He was the first Choreographer in Residence for the Royal
Winnipeg Ballet and in the “it’s a small world” category,
was one of Hugh Nini’s first students at the Denton Ballet
Academy in 1979. Yes, Mark Godden, an internationally
renowned choreographer and former Denton Ballet
Academy student, and Hannah Schoendorf current
Denton Ballet Academy student, brought ballet full
circle at another internationally famous ballet institution,
the Harid Conservatory.
“I had another similar experience last year. The two
dancers that I bring in from the Hungarian National
Ballet for my Nutcracker every year were performing
at an international gala in Houston. There were ten companies literally from every
corner of the globe. I drove down to see my Nutcracker dancers. They were performing
a piece by Boris Eifman, a Russian choreographer. While watching one of the other
companies on the program, I think it was Ballet d’ Flanders, I thought there was something
oddly familiar about the choreography. I knew I had never seen the work before
but it seemed familiar. I opened the program to see what it was and discovered why the
style seemed so familiar. It was a piece by Mark. So here I am, in Houston, to see two
Nutcracker dancers from Hungary, and one of the other companies there from Belgium
is performing a piece by one of my former Denton Ballet Academy students. Add one
more “degree of non-separation” to that, Hannah and her family were there too.”
How many Texas towns double as famous movie locations?
Pilot Point got its taste of Hollywood in 1967, when stars Warren
Beatty and Faye Dunaway came to town to shoot
the movie Bonnie & Clyde. Many locals were extras
and locations in and around Pilot Point were
chosen for the authentic 1930s flavor they gave
to the gangster adventure film.
Nowadays, Pilot Point remembers its silver
screen history and the strength of the community
that survived the Great Depression
with an annual Bonnie and Clyde Days
celebration. This year’s celebration is on
Saturday, October 8th from 10 am until
5:00 pm.
Pilot’s Point’s Town Square will turn into
a piece of living history, with events such
as a Model A car parade, peanut and cotton
growing demonstrations, and talks by experts
about what life was like in the 1930s. Many
locals and visitors wear authentic costumes,
and kids are always fascinated by Hooverville, a
historically accurate recreation of a 1930s shantytown.
Those kids can Denton County’s Newest
