letter from the publisher
June/July 2011
We would like to thank Denton Independent School District and the Denton
Chamber of Commerce for the 2011 Best Adopter Top Communicator award. We would
also like to thank the Daughters of the American Revolution for recognizing 380News for
Excellence in Media Work. We are always happy to share information and news for area
organizations.
The 380 corridor has had its share of bad weather lately but thankfully, it has not been as bad
as in other parts of the country. Summer in Texas is undoubtedly hot and before long, we are
ready for the area lakes, swimming pools and festivities. This is the time of year we light up
or backyard grills, lounge in the pool and shop for fireworks! School is out, children are out
riding their bikes, skateboards and roller skates, area ponds are filling up with ducklings, and turtles are on
the banks basking in the sun. The 380 corridor is a great place to be this time of year.
In the corridor, we have beautiful surroundings and we are close to lakes, ponds and nicely kept outdoor
recreation areas for families to enjoy. In this issue, we hope that you find useful and interesting community
information as well as a possible vacation destination. We hope everyone takes advantage of the A Train and
the Denton Parks and Recreation activities. Have a safe and eventful summer and a spectacular Independence
Day!
Deep Roots
Meet Deborah Goin
Somebody once told me, “If you want something done ask a
busy person to help you.” With Deborah, this rings true. If you
have lived in Aubrey or the surrounding area for long, chances
are you have either met Deborah Goin or you have attended an
activity, event or become involved in an organization to which
she has contributed. I do not know if it is Deborah’s keen organizational
skills or her sincere dedication to her community but
she is someone the community can count on and she deserves
gratitude. Deborah’s commitment to her community
helps secure activities that many of us
enjoy such as the Annual Tree Lighting, Music
in the Park, Speakeasy Casino Night, Little
Miss Main Street, The Peanut Festival and numerous
others.
Wood and Laura Goin, Deborah’s grandparents,
moved to the Aubrey area in the late
1800’s. Deborah was born in Sanger and lived
in Myra until she and her family moved to Aubrey
in 1958 when she was four years old. Her
parents Jackie and Bouncer Goin established
the local variety store in 1964. Later the variety
store evolved into Jackie’s Hardware a landmark
of Aubrey, Texas. The hardware store was
a family affair; everyone pitched in and helped
as needed. Deborah’s father worked for the
USDA and resigned to assist with the growth
of the store.
Deborah and her four siblings grew up in the
family business, working there after school
and on weekends. She graduated from Aubrey
High School in 1973 in a graduating class of 21
students. She was active in FHA, BETA Club
and with the school’s newspaper and annual.
After high school, Deborah attended UNT
earning a BS in Fashion Merchandising and
contining with graduate work in accounting.
Post graduate studies, she moved around with
her career for several years before ultimately
returning to Aubrey.
Deborah is not only active in her community but she is a committed,
hands on parent to her daughter Holly Hunnicutt.
Deborah glows when she talks about Holly. They communicate
on a regular basis even while Holly is away at school attending
Texas Tech. When her daughter was at home, Deborah was an
active Girl Scout leader and a Service Unit Manager for several
years. She was also a volunteer for FFA and Band Booster with
Aubrey ISD.
Debora’s long and deep roots in the Aubrey area makes her a
key “go to” person for many area organizations. Therefore, it
is not surprising that she embraced the opportunity to help
launch The Aubrey Historical Society and also assisted with
the research for an area Registered Texas Historical Landmark.
This past year a group of local volunteers organized The Aubrey
Historical Society, to preserve and document local Aubrey
area history. Deborah currently serves as Secretary of this organization.
“We are in the process of writing a history book.
We are trying to include stories from all of the early families
in Aubrey. My daddy and his grandmother must have passed
down their passion for the history of the area to me,” says Deborah.
Her father wrote a weekly article about Aubrey area history
when the Town Charter was in existence, this information
along with photographs and newspaper clippings collected and
saved by Deborah’s father will help the newly founded society.
Deborah is also a member of the Aubrey First
United Methodist Church. She was however
responsible for the documentation and application
to designate the church as a Registered
Texas Historical Landmark. Recently, the
church found out it will receive the historical
landmark designation and will hold a dedication
ceremony later in the year when the
marker is delivered. Deborah and her siblings
are fourth generation Goin family members of
the Aubrey First United Methodist church.
Deborah serves as Mayor Pro Tem for Aubrey
and has been active with the City Council for
five years. Currently, Deborah also serves as
the Vice President of the Aubrey Area Library
Board and she has been a dedicated volunteer
for the past four years with the Area Friends
of the Aubrey Library. Deborah works at Valor
Farm and she is a member of the Texas Thoroughbred
Association. Presently, she is the
Treasurer for the Aubrey Education Foundation
where she has also served on the Board
of Directors since 2001. Area business owners
know Deborah from the Aubrey 380 Area
Chamber of Commerce where she has served
on the Board of Directors since 1996 and is the
current Treasurer.
She recently wrote a grant letter to First Choice
Power to assist with the refurbishing or the
new Chamber of Commerce building on Main
Street, her dedication to the project paid off with a $2500.00
grant.
“My overall goal for Aubrey is to see it continue to grow and
remain financially sound,” says Deborah.
Deborah’s continuous involvement with the Aubrey 380Area
Chamber of Commerce, Aubrey Main Street, Aubrey Education
Foundation, Keep Aubrey Beautiful and Area Friends of
the Library as well as other organizations is invaluable. It takes
people like Deborah keep communities flourishing. As a member
of this community, I wish to express my gratitude!
Campus Theatre
By Kyla Welch
Summer Highlights
Some folks may head to the beach for a summer treat, but
in the month of June at the Campus Theatre we are headed
to the dusty dry heat of west Texas. Opening June 10, we have
Daughters of the Lone Star State by Del Shores. This biting
comedy is the third in Shores’ Texas series (with Daddy’s
Dyin’…Who’s got the Will and Cheatin’). As the members of
“The Daughters” gather for their annual Christmas celebration
and membership drive, it is painfully evident that, although
they like to think of themselves as the elite of Lowake, TX,
there aren’t many left who share their bigoted views. When
the “coloreds” and “white trash” show up, the hilarity really
begins.
Produced by Denton Community Theatre (DCT), this allfemale
ensemble is under the direction of west Texas native,
Betty Kay Seibt. The cast is a who’s who in Denton theatre.
Eighty-nine year old Betty Ann Barrow has bragging rights
as the oldest member of the cast with 15 year-old Amanda
Leavell being the youngest. Somewhere between those two
are DCT veterans Pat Sherman, Kay Lamb, Jo Anne Cassell,
Kim Campbell, Pete Kelly, Carol Howdeshell, Michelle Rose,
Theresa Ferrell, and newcomer Dianne Randolph.
At the end of June we go just down the road to Tuna, TX where
actors Buster Maloney and Justin Harmon reprise their much
acclaimed roles from 2009’s Tuna Christmas in Red, White
and Tuna. It is the 4th of July and Tuna High School’s annual
reunion. As you might expect, nothing goes quite as planned
for Bertha Bumiller, Vera Carp, or any of the other wacky
Red, White and Tuna’s “diverse” cast – photo by
Walter Eagleton Photos.
10 www.380Guide.com

esidents of Tuna. The potato salad is a bit too “tangy” and
the fireworks don’t all explode overhead. It is a guaranteed
laugh-out-loud good time. It is. It is.
In July, DCT’s Theatre School Campers will produce Little
Snow White…A Grimm Musical. This is an original adaptation
of the familiar story by local playwright, John Evarts.
Directed by Karen Gossett, this is sure to be a fun event for
the whole family. In August, DCT has another family musical,
Bye Bye Birdie. When a 1950’s teen idol visits a small town
in Ohio to bestow a single televised kiss on one lucky girl, it
creates a bit of mayhem for the normally quiet residents This
musical-comedy classic it is being directed by Sharon Veselic
and features the lovely Hannah Lane as the lucky young
woman.
Tickets for all of these great shows are available at www.dentoncommunitytheatre.com
or by calling the Campus Theatre Box
Office at 940-382-1915.
the corner, now is the time to reserve your spot
for Denton Parks and Recreation sports camps,
adventures, and day camps. Beginning June 6, day
camps are available at McMath Middle School, Denton Civic
and organized activities. Half-day camps are also available
to ages 3 to 5 at the Civic Center.
Denton Parks and Recreation offers sports camps for youth
of all interests and ages, including skills camps in basketball,
soccer, t-ball, volleyball, softball, golf, skateboarding, and tennis.
Start Smart Mini-Sports Camps, designed specifically for
younger children, are a great way to introduce ages 3 to 4 to a
variety of sports. For youth interested in water sports, Aquatic
Explorer Camp at the Denton Natatorium incorporates kayaking,
snorkeling, water polo, and water safety into one camp.
Teens, ages 11 to 15, can occupy their summer
offers one-day horseback riding, rock climbing, and kayaking
trips throughout the summer, as well as a four-day trip to Possum
Kingdom Lake during the week of August 8. Younger
DCTA Delivers a New Path for
North Texas
Funding Key to Aggressive Schedule
Since being formed and funded in 2003, the Denton County
Transportation Authority (DCTA) has worked quickly to
establish service and meet the transportation needs of Denton
County.
Recognizing the importance of public transportation to
a small urban county facing tremendous population and
employment growth, DCTA pushed an aggressive schedule for
the launch of a new path for North Texas – the A-train.
Critical to keeping the North Texas region moving, the A-train
is 21 miles of rail stretching from Denton to Carrollton and
connecting with Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s (DART) Green
Line. The regional rail line also will provide an alternative to
I-35 during its planned expansion.
DCTA’s commitment to their aggressive A-train implementation
schedule is illustrated by the strategic moves that the staff
and Board of Directors made to keep the agency on schedule
14 www.380Guide.com
and under budget. Realizing that the federal New Starts process
threatened to delay the project, the DCTA board directed
staff to forgo the federal process and seek additional funding
resources.
To move the A-train from idea to implementation, DCTA
required more than the initial half-cent sales tax, which only
accounts for 20% of the cost to build the A-train. For the
remaining 80%, the agency looked to the new Regional Toll
Revenue funding initiative. The Texas Legislature enabled the
Texas Department of Transportation to consider public- and
private sector partnerships to finance roadways. The result is a
completed project with a toll component and revenue for other
non-toll transportation projects.
The first agreement to generate Regional Toll Revenue funds
was with the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA). In exchange
for the opportunity to construct, operate and maintain
a 26-mile toll road for 52 years, NTTA paid the region $3.2

illion. The Regional Transportation Council (RTC) used
these funds to expedite about 200 transportation projects, one
of which was DCTA’s A-train. In April 2008, the RTC approved
funds for the purchase of rail cars and in August 2008,
$190.2 million was approved for the completion of DCTA’s
A-train.
June 18, 2011, will mark a major milestone for DCTA and
Denton County residents, as service will begin on the muchanticipated
A-train with a public celebration beginning at
11:30 am at the Downtown Denton Transit Center. Revenue
service will begin on June 20th.
The initial A-train service will start with one element left to
refine – the rail vehicles. A phased vehicle implementation
plan has been developed and the A-train service will launch
with the use of Rail Diesel Cars previously operated by the
Trinity Railway Express (TRE). Due to manufacturing and
delivery time, the A-train will transition by September 2012 to
the new generation GTW 2/6 Diesel Multiple Units (DMU),
manufactured by Switzerland-based Stadler Bussnang AG.
Purchased in May 2009, the DMU construction process began
in September 2010, and vehicle deliveries are scheduled for
August 2011 through April 2012. Testing of the new vehicles
will continue through August 2012, and complete transition
to the fleet of 11 DMUs is planned for September 2012.
Ultimately, the A-train DMUs will offer floor-level boarding,
luggage and bike racks, and space for wheelchairs. Each
vehicle will seat 96 passengers and have a total capacity of 200.
The A- train fleet will run in couples, for a total of 192 seats
and capacity of 400 people per train.
Recognizing that passenger rail is the future for North Texas,
DCTA wants to ensure that its vehicle has application in
other rail corridors and can operate concurrently with freight.
DCTA and Stadler have worked closely with the Federal
Railroad Administration (FRA) through the Railroad Safety
Advisory Committee (RSAC) to develop safety standard
criteria for Alternative Vehicle Technology (AVT) using Crash
Energy Management (CEM) Systems. DCTA is currently
working with Stadler to be the first transportation agency and
car builder in the United States to make necessary changes to
accommodate the new safety measures.
Like many rail transit systems across the United States, the
A-train promises to enhance economic development activities
near its rail stations through transit-oriented development.
This is already being illustrated in South Lewisville near the
Hebron Station where a $212.7 million mixed use development
has broken ground.
When the A-train pulls into the station this June, it will be less
than ten years since the idea of regional rail in Denton County
was first conceived. Local champions, regional and statewide
relationships, and broad public support have been critical to
DCTA’s timely implementation. Another component pivotal
to the process is the true grit and determination shown by the
young agency to bring this project to fruition.
Iconic
Denton area photographer Russell Linton captures
the pop culture art installment called “Cadillac
Ranch” located two miles west of Amarillo, Texas.
A collective of artists known as Ant Farm
paid tribute to America’s automobile by placing
10 Cadillacs half-buried nose first in a wheat
field in 1974. Since its creation, it has inspired
songs and even received a tribute from Walt
Disney and Pixar film Cars. Bruce Springsteen
has a song titled “Cadillac Ranch” on
his 1980 album The River. The late Chris
Ledoux and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
also recorded a song called “Cadillac
Ranch”. King of the Hill has an episode
featuring the ranch and it has even made
its way into music videos and reality
shows. Although the land is private, it
is free to enter anytime during daylight
hours. The installment is located off I-40
exit 60 (Arnott Road).
Get Your Kicks in Amarillo
A Friendly Family Destination
Jutta Matalka, CTP, TDM
Amarillo, Texas lies on the cross roads of I-40 and I-27 in
the Texas Panhandle, just about in the middle between both
coasts. The city is proud of its western heritage, but keeps a
sharp eye on the future.
Ranching and farming and oil and gas have been the life blood
of the area since the 19th century. Today there is a medical
center, which includes a cancer center, heart hospital and a
neo-natal unit. High tech industries such as Corning and Bell
Helicopter, a pharmacy school and more make Amarillo the
business center of the Texas Panhandle.
Amarillo is also home to the Palo Duro Canyon, 2nd largest
canyon in the U.S, one of the most magnificent scenic attractions.
The extra ordinary vistas of color and beauty can be enjoyed
from the comfort of one’s automobile. Visitors travel the
the same trails used by the Apache, Comanche, buffalo hunters
and early Spanish explorers.
The canyon is also home to the well known musical outdoor
drama “Texas”. A 600-foot cliff serves as the backdrop for
the play. Now in its 47th season TEXAS is performed Tuesday
through Sunday from early June to late August.
The fabled Route 66 runs directly through the city, conjuring
pictures of days gone by in front of the mind’s eye. This
28 www.380Guide.com
year Amarillo is
hosting the International
Route 66
Festival June 9-12.
We are expecting
attendees from
around the world.
Three of the finest museums in the State, the Panhandle
Plains Historical Museum, the American Quarter Horse Hall
of Fame and Museum and the Kwahadi Museum of the American
Indian, are located here and bear witness to the history of
the area.
Each year more than 1.7 million visitors from all over the world
visit the city. They enjoy the many things to do and see. There
is the western history, great shopping and dining, cowboy
meals and World championship equestrian events throughout
the year. The arts flourish in Amarillo with the new Globe-
News Performing Arts Center, Amarillo Opera, Little Theater,
the Symphony and the well respected Lone Star Ballet.
Over 5,000 hotel rooms offer the visitor stays for every budget.
Most of them are well-know brands. Be it a stop or a weekend
trip Amarillo is all you expect from Texas and more.
