40 Hour Famine
Fantastic effort by our students!
The students of Bellingen High School raised over $3000 for the 40 hour famine this
year. The money will go to help feed families in Malawi where food security is such an
issue and many children under 5 suffer from malnutrition.
Thirty students took part in the Famine with 11 students raising over $100 each. This is
a massive effort by such a small part of our school community. Top fundraiser was
Holley Pavy who raised over $600 with the help of a street cake stall, which she
organised by herself. Elisha
Thompson was the second highest
fundraiser with over $200.
All the students who took part
should be congratulated, as this is
the most the school has raised in
many years.
In an environment where many
people are so ready to be critical of
the young people, it is so nice to see
these socially conscious students
making a real effort to help those in
need. Let’s hope these students
continue with their efforts for others
and many more join them next year
to make an even bigger impact.
WELL DONE!
Year 11 Hospitality
Year 11 Hospitality completed their Preliminary year of studies with one week
of Work Placement at various Hospitality establishments within the region.
Youth Directions assisted the students with their placements, whereby students
were required to work 35 hours in Industry, either back-of-house or front-ofhouse,
or a combination. This is a mandatory requirement of the course. All
students gained positive Work Placement reports. Some students made such a
great impression that they were offered casual jobs, including Grace Weick and
Sara Swann. Lachlan French will hopefully be working in the Christmas
holidays, along with Madalyn Gilmore. Well Done Year 11 Hospitality!
Down at the Ag Plot
Congratulations to both Sharna Davis (Year 9) and Alex Devon (Year 11) who
represented the school at the Red Poll Cattle training camp at Glen Innes in the
holidays. The organisers had nothing but praise for both students and many thanks
to Ms Maida Bugg of Buggaree Red Poll Stud, Urunga who sponsored the students.
While on the subject of livestock, our Red Polls have begun calving and our lambs
are growing well and have been visited by not only the Agriculture students but
also most of our Year 7 and Year 8 students.
It is that time of year when we sell some of our chickens. There are year old layers
($10) and point of lay birds ($16) for sale. Please contact Ms Lockman or Mr Hiller
at the school.
Gold and Silver Excursions
The Gold Excursion this year will be held on Tuesday 3 rd and Wednesday 4 th December.
We will be visiting Movieworld and Dreamworld (with optional entry to Whitewater
World). Students will be staying at Sea World Nara Resort on the Tuesday night, this
includes an “All You Can Eat” dinner and breakfast. Letters will be sent home shortly in
regard to cost, itinerary etc.
The Silver Excursion will be held on Tuesday 3rd December and this year we will be
visiting Dreamworld.
We are again running our "lay-by" system. If you think you will be up for some costs,
whether it is a major excursion or similar thing, you can pay the activity off gradually. If
for some reason your child does not go on the Gold Excursion and it is before the forfeit of
deposit date, then we will refund your money. If you wish to take advantage of the "layby"
system, go to the Front Office, nominate the activity and make your payment - now is
a good time to start.
The Clappers ’13
Last call to all you budding filmmakers, we have received some excellent contributions but still
need a few more for The Clappers ’13 to run. Films must be in to Ms Lane by 25 th October.
A reminder of the categories –

Minute me - a one minute autobiographic film that captures the essence of you.
Documentary or mockumentary - a short film, between 3-5 minutes that discusses an
issue, or portrays a special person or sport, or activity, anything really so long as it’s nonfiction
and it doesn’t have to be serious.
Short fiction film - tell a story in less than 5 minutes, let your imagination run wild, it
could be a crime story or a love affair, it could be a thriller or a comedy, but remember their
will be minors in the audience, so keep it respectable.
Music video - get your friends together and have some fun shooting a video clip for your
favourite song, if you’re really talented you could even sing it. You may use an app like
Video Star to make things easier.
*****To all non-filmmakers and filmmakers alike, start planning your outfit for the red
carpet, you need to frocked up and dressed to impress on the 8 th November.*****
See you there!
Karlie on the road to World
Championships!
Karlie Swanson has succeeded again. After winning the NSW All Schools 16
years Cross Country Title, she attended the National Cross Country
Championships in Launceston, where she had to compete in the U18 age group.
She had to compete against over 100 runners from all over Australia. In very
difficult muddy conditions Karlie showed what a super talent she is finishing 2 nd
overall, however, was the first school student to cross the line making her the
Australian All Schools winner. To add to this she was also the first 16 year old
to cross the line which meant she was the first runner selected in the Australian
team to compete at the World Championships next year in Israel during March.
She walked away from the Championships with three gold and one silver medal!
What an amazing achievement and what an outstanding talent.
Karlie then had to travel back to Sydney to compete at the NSWCHS Athletics
Carnival. She had missed the 3000m run due to her commitments in Launceston,
so ran in the shorter 1500m event. Speed was not a problem as Karlie rounded
up her opposition to win convincingly and take out gold again. Karlie has also
been selected in the NSW Athletics Talented Target Program for middle
distance runners giving her access to top level coaches and facilities. Next for
Karlie is the NSW All Schools Athletics in Sydney from 10-13 th October.

Bellingen High School had 9 other competitors at the recent NSWCHS Athletics
Carnival. While finishing 1 st is a truly first class act, finishing in the top ten at
State is a really fantastic result.
Bellingen High School Uniform Code
Safety:
NO long hanging bracelets, necklaces or earrings, excessively loose
garments in practical subjects and sports activities.
Establishing and maintaining safe working environments is fundamental to the work of
teachers. Footwear is an important safety item. Good soles provide a sound grip on
the floor preventing accidents from occurring. Footwear can also protect feet from
mechanical or chemical damage. DEC policy clearly states that it is mandatory that
students carrying out practical activities using chemicals or equipment in schools
wear enclosed leather footwear. This includes all Science, Industrial Arts and Home
Economics classes. Our new Bellingen High School commercial stainless steel
kitchen began operation last year and no student will be allowed in without leather
footwear.
Leather shoes can now be purchased for as little as $20. Leather skate shoes and
leather joggers are now readily available trendy options other than the traditional
school shoe.
We urge parents to provide their children with leather upper shoes so that we can
meet our OH&S obligations.
Remember that if students are out of uniform they
are required to bring a note from home AND/OR see
the Deputy Principal for a red uniform slip.
