Principal’s Report
Samantha Terry wins a Tuckwell Scholarship
On behalf of the school, congratulations to
Samantha Terry who has been offered a Tuckwell
Scholarship to attend the Australian National
University in Canberra, commencing in 2014.
Samantha was chosen from a shortlist of 72
students who spent a weekend at ANU
undertaking a series of individual and group
interviews. The original call for scholars received
657 applications of which 217 were invited to the
next stage of online assessments. Sam will
receive $20,000 a year for the length of a single
or double undergraduate degree as well as
ongoing academic and career mentoring. She will
live in student accommodation and be encouraged
to pursue community service and extracurricular
activities.
The Tuckwell Scholarship Program was
established by ANU alumnus Graham Tuckwell and his wife Louise in February. Their
$50 million gift to the University was the largest ever donation to an Australian National
University by an Australian citizen.
Literacy Support
We are very excited to have the funds, via National Partnerships to be able to give
intensive literacy support to our students. Using the new 7-10 Literacy Continuum, we
have identified students who could use a boost. Selected students’ families have been
invited to attend planning meetings to develop a Literacy plan for their son/daughter.

Over the remainder of this year, students will be given extra support and tuition in
literacy strategies with the aim of helping them to better access the curriculum.
Alongside this, teachers will also be trained in the Super 6 Comprehension Strategy a
copy of which has been included in this Newsletter. If you have any questions about
the Super 6 or the Literacy strategy, please don’t hesitate to call the school to speak to
any member of our Learning and Support Team.
Attendance
I can’t stress enough how important it is for students to attend school every day with
punctuality and preparedness for work. If a student misses one day per week, this
amounts to 40 days per year; an extraordinary level of absence. In the same way,
lateness to school adds up. Being half hour late twice a week adds up to approximately
6 school days per year. Worse than this, students who are late miss the very important
instruction at the beginning of their first lesson and this can lead to frustration through
the day. Wherever there are concerns about attendance, the school will make a
notification to the Regional Home School Liaison Officer which can then turn into a
legal problem for parents. If ever your son or daughter is absent from school, please
make sure that we have an explanatory letter. We also ask that all appointments
during school time, especially during sport afternoon, are kept to urgent appointments
which can’t be made at any other time.
Until next newsletter
STAR Entry Scheme
Applications are now open for the Southern Cross University STAR Entry scheme. Southern Cross
University's STAR Entry Scheme enables Year 12 students to gain an early offer to study at
Southern Cross University in 2014 based on their school Principal's recommendation. The STAR
Entry Scheme matches an individual student to a particular SCU course based on their likelihood
of success in their chosen discipline.
SCU recognises that ATAR and OP scores are not the only indicators of your likelihood of success
at University. Via this scheme you can gain an early offer to study an SCU course in 2014 based on
your Principal's recommendation. Many talented students have undertaken their undergraduate
degree at Southern Cross University after gaining admission through the STAR Entry Scheme.
SCU will notify Queensland students in mid-October and NSW students in mid-November of the
outcome of their application. You will need to match your STAR Entry Scheme first preference with
a first preference application through UAC or QTAC to receive your STAR offer which will be made
in two early offer rounds (November 28, 2013 through QTAC and December 5, 2013 through UAC).
For more information and to register for the STAR Entry Scheme visit www.scu.edu.au/star.
Registration closes on 13 September.
