83 Portraits from Eastern <strong>and</strong> Central Europe, Italy <strong>and</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> offer an excit<strong>in</strong>g view to the world of<br />

children of past centuries, <strong>and</strong> an <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to the ideas of their <strong>time</strong>. Pr<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cesses,<br />

offspr<strong>in</strong>g of the nobility <strong>and</strong> upper classes seem to observe their viewers not only with their<br />

childlike charm but also with a dignity appropriate to their background. These enchant<strong>in</strong>g portraits<br />

of <strong>in</strong>fants, wrapped up as if <strong>in</strong> cocoons, of small girls <strong>and</strong> boys wear<strong>in</strong>g dresses <strong>and</strong> coral amulets,<br />

<strong>and</strong> of charm<strong>in</strong>g, magnificently dressed youths were once commissioned to announce a<br />

forthcom<strong>in</strong>g marriage <strong>and</strong> also to hold <strong>in</strong> memory children that due to the <strong>time</strong>’s high <strong>in</strong>fant<br />

mortality rate, might at some <strong>time</strong> die.<br />

Yannick und Ben Jakober, an artist couple work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternationally, have been collect<strong>in</strong>g portraits of<br />

children for over twenty years with an artist’s eye.<br />

The Imperial Collection from the National Palace Museum Taipei<br />

This unique imperial Ch<strong>in</strong>ese collection from the National Palace Museum <strong>in</strong> Taipei will be seen<br />

for the first <strong>time</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>. This show will offer an encounter with one of the oldest cultures <strong>in</strong><br />

the world, reflected <strong>in</strong> approximately 400 selected master pieces. On view are famous pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong><br />

calligraphic draw<strong>in</strong>gs by old masters, rare seals, exquisite porcela<strong>in</strong>, antique ritual bronze tools <strong>and</strong><br />

carved jade objects. Also <strong>in</strong>cluded are book pr<strong>in</strong>ts, magnificent tapestries <strong>and</strong> embroideries, lacquer<br />

<strong>and</strong> cloisonné works, carved wood objects <strong>and</strong> collection cab<strong>in</strong>ets made from various valuable<br />

materials - all never seen before outside of Ch<strong>in</strong>a. The works selected for this exhibition not only<br />

reflect the diversity <strong>and</strong> creativity of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese art, but also the <strong>in</strong>tellectual <strong>and</strong> political<br />

developments of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese history. The presentation focuses on human be<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> their relationship<br />

to nature <strong>and</strong> society. It documents the sensuous magnificence of art from the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese imperial<br />

court <strong>and</strong> br<strong>in</strong>gs to view masterworks from the symbolically rich tradition of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese scholars.<br />

Additional exhibition themes are dedicated to the importance of imperial patronage caught <strong>in</strong> the<br />

dynamic between esthetic values, moral ideals, political goals <strong>and</strong> its endeavor to also preserve <strong>and</strong><br />

pass on artistic achievements - from the Neolithic jade grave f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs to the advent of modernity.<br />

The Moscow Kreml<strong>in</strong> Reflected <strong>in</strong> its 800-Year History 13.02.2004 – <strong>09.05</strong>.2004<br />

The Great Collections<br />

The heart of Russia beats <strong>in</strong> the Kreml<strong>in</strong>. This modest Moscow fortress from the 12th century has<br />

<strong>in</strong> its varied history not only developed <strong>in</strong>to a magnificent architectural ensemble but has also<br />

become a synonym for the Russian state, for orthodox faith <strong>and</strong> Russian culture. More than 300<br />

highly-prized objects - icon <strong>and</strong> portrait pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, books, historical maps, liturgical <strong>in</strong>struments,<br />

jewelry <strong>and</strong> textiles, armor <strong>and</strong> weapons, as well as valuable gifts presented to the Czars by foreign<br />

representatives - will illustrate the historical milestones of this unprecedented ascent. The<br />

Kreml<strong>in</strong>’s important build<strong>in</strong>g-phases from the early Middle Ages to the 19th century may be<br />

virtually experienced by means of a computer-aided-design (CAD) construction: The visitor may<br />

accompany a foreign representative on his ceremonial way to an audience with the Czar or may<br />

follow a coronation procession <strong>through</strong> the palaces <strong>and</strong> churches of the Kreml<strong>in</strong>.<br />
