CISRI-ISP to spread <strong>and</strong> bolster its m<strong>and</strong>ate to counter<br />
malnutrition <strong>and</strong> achievement of the United Nations’ Millennium<br />
Development Goals (MDG’s) in the Republic of Iraq<br />
[UN Headquarters, New York 24th November, 2006] CISRI-ISP Permanent<br />
Observer Mission to the United Nations/ECOSOC of the Intergovernmental Institution<br />
for the Use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition in its endless pursuit to<br />
counter severe malnutrition across the globe through the use of micro-algae Spirulina<br />
would launch its m<strong>and</strong>ate <strong>and</strong> affirmative action programmes in the Republic of Iraq,<br />
soon.<br />
A recent visit of an official delegation under the leadership of CISRI-ISP’s <strong>Ambassador</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Envoy</strong> H.E. <strong>Cavaliere</strong> <strong>Philip</strong> <strong>Bonn</strong>, to the Republic of Iraq explored various<br />
avenues for CISRI-ISP to be a key stakeholder in the sustainable development <strong>and</strong><br />
rebuilding of Iraq. The visit lasted from October 13 th to the 16 th 2006.<br />
Besides the organization’s key m<strong>and</strong>ate to counter malnutrition by the use of microalgae<br />
Spirulina, the delegation explored avenues like education <strong>and</strong> sports among<br />

others, where CISRI-ISP could play a crucial role to make the world a peaceful <strong>and</strong><br />
better place through sport <strong>and</strong> the Olympic ideal in its pursuit for the universal<br />
achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.<br />

patients along with a team of doctors from<br />
the hospital. The use of micro-algae<br />
Spirulina is being explored to counter<br />
many life threatening diseases that include<br />
HIV/AIDS <strong>and</strong> cancer among others<br />
besides its inherent potential to bridge the<br />
health divide in an effective <strong>and</strong> efficient<br />
manner within a very short span of time.<br />
Recognising the crucial role modern<br />
education can play along with its traditional<br />
counterpart in the empowerment <strong>and</strong><br />
development process, H.E. <strong>Cavaliere</strong><br />
<strong>Philip</strong> <strong>Bonn</strong> in the presence of Dr. Ali<br />
Saeed Mohammad, President of the<br />
University of Sulaimani announced CISRI-<br />
ISP’s Scholarships for meritorious students<br />
to pursue their doctoral degree in the field<br />
of Human Rights.<br />
During the visit, the delegation prayed for<br />
the Iraqi people <strong>and</strong> the world peace,<br />
outside a former detention centre. The<br />
delegation also observed a one minute<br />
silence in the memory of the dead <strong>and</strong> the<br />
ones who were tortured.<br />
Prior to its official meeting with the Ministry<br />
of Health in the Republic of Iraq, the<br />
delegation visited one of the most modern<br />
H.E. <strong>Cavaliere</strong>. <strong>Philip</strong> <strong>Bonn</strong> also addressed<br />
the young students of the Faculty of<br />
Medicine of the University of Sulaimani<br />
<strong>and</strong> inspired them to take challenges with<br />
a stride. He emphasised the positive role<br />
that the medical community can play to<br />
bridge the global health divide <strong>and</strong> secure<br />
the Right to Food <strong>and</strong> quality nutrition.<br />
In order to fulfil its pledge to create assistance for education in the Republic of Iraq,<br />
CISRI-ISP along with its Official Working Partners would be introducing educational<br />

programmes that could benefit the young minds of the country in order to make them a<br />
key-stakeholder in the modern development process not only of Iraq but of the world.<br />
H.E. <strong>Cavaliere</strong> <strong>Philip</strong> <strong>Bonn</strong> also explored the possibilities to launch CISRI-ISP’s<br />
affirmative action programme “Global Sports for Peace’ in the Republic Iraq at the<br />
earliest. The initiative aims to use sports as potent tool towards peace <strong>and</strong> development.<br />
Global Sports for Peace is guided by the Directives associated with the following<br />
United Nations’ General Assembly Resolutions:<br />
(60/8)-Building a Peaceful <strong>and</strong> Better World through Sport <strong>and</strong> the Olympic Ideal<br />
(59/10)- Sports as a means to promote education, health, development <strong>and</strong> peace<br />
by proclaiming the year ‘2005’ as ‘International Year of Sports <strong>and</strong> Physical<br />
Education’<br />
(55/2)- ‘The Millennium Declaration’ by the Heads of the Member States of the<br />
United Nations, 8 th September 2000<br />
(60/3)- Proclamation of the period ‘2001-2010’ as “The International Decade for a<br />
Culture of Peace <strong>and</strong> Non-Violence for the Children of the World”<br />
(1325) -Assuring women’s participation in peace-making <strong>and</strong> peace-building<br />
(56/168)- Ad Hoc Committee for a comprehensive <strong>and</strong> integral international<br />
convention to promote <strong>and</strong> protect the rights <strong>and</strong> dignity of persons with<br />
disabilities<br />
Global Sports for Peace hopes to be a catalyst in organizing, securing, implementing,<br />
<strong>and</strong> assuring all stakeholders- Government, Private Sector, <strong>and</strong> Civil Society- contacts<br />
necessary to implement the programme. The goodwill ambassadors of the programme<br />
from across the world would also be playing a key role in the initiative.<br />
CISRI-ISP- a Synopsis<br />
CISRI-ISP has been established through two Multi-Lateral International Agreements<br />
[comprising various Member States of the United Nations] that are recognized <strong>and</strong><br />
registered with the UN Office of Legal Affairs/Treaty Section. UN Treaty Series<br />
[37542/43].<br />
CISRI-ISP is accredited as an Observer with the United Nations Economic <strong>and</strong> Social<br />
Council (ECOSOC), in keeping with resolution E/2003/212, dated 5th March 2003.<br />
Its principal goal is to provide relief to emergency victims of calamities, through the use of<br />
food micro-algae Spirulina as an alternative low cost protein source to rehabilitate<br />
severely malnourished victims.<br />
