KOSOVO INSTITUTE FOR AGRICULTURE EVOLVED DURING THE YEAR Introduction Kosovo Institute of Agriculture (KIA) was established in 1947. KIA is part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development and there have been working around 33 people. Different Projects and MAFRD have been given support mainly equipments (Gas chromatography –GC etc) to KIA in amount of 300,000.00 Euros Competences � Technical and scientific support for departments of the Ministry, � Controlling the quality of agriculture inputs, foods and protecting of the environmental, � Researches for varieties (wheat, barley, maize and potatoes) in Kosovo climatic conditions, � Research work in line of establishing new varieties for wheat and maize hybrids, � Preparatory work on the creation of gene bank for the different cultures, � Assessment of quality and prolificacy of land in Kosovo, � Research work, identification and inventory of harmful biological agents (insects, diseases, weeds etc) in Kosovo. Support Provided by the Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation Kosovo (HIS‐K) HSI-K has been willing to support Kosovo Institute for Agriculture in different level: � Improving of soil testing techniques, internship for KIA staff to the neighbour countries, � Engagement of regional consultant on increasing skills for testing pesticide residue on fruit & vegetable, soil and water, � Improving plant protection techniques through sending their staff on internship in plant protection institute in Albania, � Improve their quality work, support with rreagents and small equipments. Skills for KIA staff have been significantly improved on plant protection and pesticide residue.

Specific activities/<strong>support</strong><br />

� Purchasing reagents and small equipments in amount of 4,300.00 €,<br />

� Equipments, UV Ilumina<strong>to</strong>r 302mm in amount of 1,800.00 €,<br />

� Regional consultant for testing pesticide residue in amount of 2,500.00 €,<br />

� Internship for KIA staff on improving soil testing techniques, 1,500.00 €,<br />

� Internship for KIA staff on improving plant protection methods, 1,450.00 €.<br />

In <strong>to</strong>tal, the Project has invested around 11,500.00 Euros within two years.<br />

What has been improved?<br />

� KIA staffs are able <strong>to</strong> use equipments (Gas chroma<strong>to</strong>graphy -GC) for testing pesticides residue in<br />

different samples (vegetable, fruits, water, soil etc),<br />

� KIA staffs are able <strong>to</strong> use the advanced technologies on testing soil and plant protection<br />

methods,<br />

� KIA now is able <strong>to</strong> make quick distinguish between different bacterial diseases focusing with fire<br />

blight,<br />

� KIA is sufficiently improved with practical work due <strong>to</strong> the <strong>support</strong> provided in reagents and<br />

small equipments.<br />
