José González—
with the power to mesmerise
————————————————————–———————————————————————
A LONE MAN WITH A GUITAR. What
might sound, on paper, like just another
troubadour is actually a singer-songwriter
who’s taken the world by storm. Equipped
only with a nylon stringed guitar and a simple
home studio, José González has managed
to gather the voices of international
critics, music-lovers and record buyers into
one grand choir of praise. For González
has that little bit extra, that rare ability to
mesmerise people. His emotional melodies
combine with thought-provoking lyrics and
a powerful stage presence to leave his audiences
virtually defenceless.
And all this is testified by his countless
awards and prizes – the Swedish government’s
Music Export Prize, the European
Border Breaker Award, and a Grammy for
best newcomer amongst them.
José González’s musical career began in
his home town of Göteborg. His Argentinean
father played everything from Latin
American music to the Beatles, and the
young José listened. The family home also
had a guitar, and one day González senior
came home with one volume of Beatles’
music and another of bossa nova classics.
That summer, José sat picking out tunes –
and that was how he learnt the basics.
Shortly afterwards he started to take lessons
in classical guitar, and tried his hand at flamenco,
the characteristic touch and rhythm
of which can be detected today in González’s
own music. In fact, his style can best
be described as a synthesis of all these influences:
bossa nova, Beatles, flamenco and
classical.
GONZÁLEZ USES HIS VOICE as a second
instrument, which he weaves into his guitar
lines on equal terms, neither dominant nor
subordinate. It is this combination of González’s
dextrous, syncopated fingerpicking
and his unobtrusive singing that makes the
result so hypnotic.
González has also made a name for his
highly personal covers of other hits from
artists as diverse as Kylie Minogue and
Swedish duo The Knife. Always, however,
González finds a nerve in the song that he
harnesses and makes all his own. Two of his
seminal interpretations are The Knife’s
“Heartbeats”, in which he transforms a
synth-pop hit to a heartrending lullaby, and
Kylie Minogue’s “Hand on your heart”,
which in González’s hands becomes a profoundly
melancholic ballad.
Do you want to find information about new
sheet music for a specific instrument? Or
read a biography about a composer who
you cannot find about in the reference
a hit song from 1953? Do you want to buy
copies of Lars Gullin’s jazz compositions?
Or would you perhaps want to buy folk,
ballad, jazz and classical CDs?
You’ll find the answers to these and
many more questions as you browse
through our website. Information concerning
all styles of Swedish music and the
music for which we retain the rights is
available there. The essence of our business
is in encouraging and promoting more and
frequent performances of Swedish music
through documenting and disseminating
information on such Swedish music.
the EP “Crosses”, but it was when Sony
Bravia chose his version of “Heartbeats” as
the soundtrack to a popular advert that he
really started to score commercial successes.
All of a sudden, the troubadour from
Göteborg found his name topping the
number one in England on the list of most
Nonetheless, José González is by no
more can be said of someone who opened
for the Dalai Lama and who was handpicked
huge biography project
Over the past five years The Royal Swedish
Academy of Music has been preparing a series
of biographies entitled Svenska Tonsättare
(Swedish Composers). The series aims at covering
20th century composers and currently
more than ten authors have been contracted
for the project. The first biography is dedicated
to one of the giants of the century, Hilding
Rosenberg (1892–1985) who, during his long
life, enriched the Swedish musical treasury
with an extensive output of a wide variety of
music. The biography, written by Per Olov
Broman, was published in February 2007. In
coming years the series will include biographies
about Lars-Erik Larsson, Ingvar Lidholm,
Bo Nilsson, Moses Pergament, Allan
Pettersson, Eduard Tubin and Lars Johan
Werle, amongst others.
JONAS FRANKE-BLOM
PSCD 158
The music in Drama was originally written
for the theatre. Much of the inspiration for the
works comes from a stage situation where the
music functions as a counterpoint to the text
and where returning motives become important
cornerstones.
The compositions were commissioned in
connection with the respective productions at
the Gothenburg City Theatre: Hamlet in
1997, Albert Speer in 2001 (at Stora Teatern),
and The Tempest in 2002.
