MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP
Major Lester Ferguson
Bahamas Divisional Commander
Mrs. Judy V. C. Munroe
Advisory Board Chairperson
DEAR FRIENDS OF THE SALVATION ARMY
One of the things that keeps humanity alive, especially in an environment of change and challenge, is hope. Martin
Luther King, Jr. said, “If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving...” The Salvation Army in The
Bahamas works hard at being an agent of hope. For us, hope is not clinging to a wish that something good might happen,
it is working towards the expectation and outcome that good will happen.
The Salvation Army calls hope, love in action. It is what happens when one lonely woman is given warm shelter for the
night; when a struggling family is offered support; when a troubled youth receives guidance at a critical moment; when an
unemployed father of a sick child is given help and encouragement. Each day, The Salvation Army in The Bahamas offers
hope to many: the hope that someone cares; that all is not lost; that there will be a brighter, better tomorrow!
The Salvation Army considers itself a humble steward of your generosity. We want to express our deepest gratitude to all
of our donors, supporters and volunteers. Your continuing support allows us to meet our community’s evolving needs.
God Bless You!
INTERNATIONAL MISSION STATEMENT
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is
based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to
meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
Introduction
In October 2013 The Salvation Army entered its 2013 - 2014 fiscal
year with great enthusiasm and a sense of renewed strength. The
Army was eager to explore several new capital projects as well
as continue to provide management and support to its ongoing
social, educational and outreach programmes.
November 2013
Annual Christmas Drive Initiatives
A sight that has come to be expected during the holiday season
is The Salvation Army’s red kettles and the ever familiar sound
of bells being rung by smiling volunteers. Bell-ringers beckon
passers-by to make a little noise of their own by putting their
donations in the kettles. In doing so, they can spread goodwill
and cheer by helping to make the Christmas season a bit brighter
for the less fortunate.
With the melodious sounds of the St. Anne’s School Choir and the
Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band wafting through the air
The Salvation Army’s 2013 Christmas Kettle Drive was officially
launched by Mrs. Bernadette Christie, wife of Prime Minister
Perry Christie, who also made the first donation to the kettle.
In Freeport, Grand Bahama, added to the annual kettle launch was
The Grand Bahama Shipyard’s announcement that its 4th Annual
Food Drive would assist The Salvation Army. The Shipyard’s
‘Lend a Hand, Give a Can’ programme seeks food donations from
the public while they are shopping at local grocery stores around
the island.
Likewise in the Turks & Caicos Islands officers and advisory board
members partnered with the business community to raise funds,
meet practical needs and uplift spirits during the holidays.
5
December 2013
RBC Royal Bank of Canada announced that it would continue
to help sponsor The Salvation Army’s Annual Christmas Cheer
Program. This Christmas Cheer program supports the ongoing
work of the organization while directly helping needy children,
less fortunate families and senior citizens at Christmas. RBC’s
sponsorship helped The Salvation Army defray costs specifically
for the Annual Christmas Community and Seniors’ Luncheon as
well as the annual Children’s Party.
Since 1984 The Salvation Army has hosted an annual Christmas
Community and Seniors’ Luncheon. The luncheon brightens the
season for over 800 senior citizens, providing them with fellowship,
food and an inspirational message of hope. In addition, each
attending senior receives a food parcel with enough dry goods
to feed a family of four. Many of the seniors who attend often
have very little money for a Christmas celebration, so the Army’s
Christmas luncheon helps to meet very real needs.
In Grand Bahama and the Turks and Caicos our Advisory Boards
and other volunteers also teamed up to ensure that the kettle
drives were successfully operating around the islands to support
local feeding and disaster relief programmes.
February /March 2014
In the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Army’s fourth annual Chocolate
Lover’s Showcase brought out more than 250 supporters. This is one of
The Salvation Army’s biggest fundraisers and this year the event raised
just over $20,000.
Proceeds from the event benefit The Salvation Army’s school lunch
programme which provids daily nutritious meals for children at one of the
public high School in Providenciales. The Chocolate Lover’s Showcase is
organized by the Turks and Caicos Advisory Board and other dedicated
and generous partners who have worked very hard over the years to
make the annual event a success.
In February Nassau’s Annual Bell Ringers’ Reception and Awards was held
at the Paul Farquharson Center. We were honored to have then Territorial
Leaders Commissioners Onal and Edmane Castor in attendance at this
year’s celebrations.
programme was performed by the students of the school. The service was moderated by the school’s senior teacher, Mr.
William ‘Bill’ Lightbourne, who himself is blind. Yes - The blind CAN lead the blind!
Groundbreaking Ceremony for The Freeport Corps Expansion Project
The Salvation Army Freeport Corps broke ground in May to commence
work on its $450,000 building expansion project. More than $200,000 of
that amount was raised in Grand Bahama, and The Salvation Army USA
Eastern Territory donated the remaining portion. Lt-Colonels Dewhurst and
Vevene Jonas, Territorial Headquarters officers from Jamaica were on hand
to participate in the ground-breaking.
June 2014
The Army’s 2014 Spring Appeal, Hope in Action, was launched
alongside a nationally televised public service announcement
highlighting the services and programs of The Salvation Army.
An Advisory board member was instrumental in soliciting the
suport of Keen I Media to produce the video and Cable Bahamas
to broadcast it. The video also aired at Gallerias Cinemas’ movie
theaters in tandem with the launch of the spring mail appeal.
July/August 2014
Its summer time! And summer time means camp time for the Freeport Corps which hosts three much anticipated camps for
hundreds of children during the summer.
Divisional Headquarters also welcomed volunteers from the USA Central Territory who
assisted with our Summer Camps in Nassau and Eleuthera!
Bahamas Striping graciously donated
striping services for the divisional
headquarters Parking lot.
The Salvation Army is committed to alleviating human
suffering through direct community-based programs that
include feeding the homeless, providing a place where
children can learn positive life skills, and helping families
in need. Each day thousands of lives change for the better
because the help offered by The Salvation Army.
The magnitude and the complexity of individual and family
problems increase daily. While The Salvation Army is
concerned with the immediate needs of those who dwell
on the precarious edge of poverty, we are also concerned
enough to address the root causes of the forces that weaken
or destroy the family and its values.
For The Salvation Army to remain strong it will require the
continued generosity of community leaders who can truly
make a difference through significant financial and other gifts.
The William Booth Society Of The Bahamas has been formed
to make certain The Salvation Army remains financially strong
and ready to meet these challenges. It offers several levels of
annual membership support beginning at $2,500.
If you wish to recive additional information about becoming a
Program: Community Adult Learning Centre
When the home that he and his grandfather were living in was
destroyed by fire, Maurice turned to The Salvation Army for daily
lunch while he tried to get a job. In September 2014, he was
approached by The Salvation Army Community Learning Center’s
Program Manager who asked Maurice if he would be interested in
enrolling in the adult learning experience. Maurice accepted the
offer.
Since then Maurice has diligently embraced the programme and
regularly attends classes at the Community Learning Centre on
Mackey Street. Maurice is enrolled in the Auto Skills program which
focuses on numeracy and literacy skills training and will eventually
transition to job readiness and personal development sessions.
The goal of the program is to help adults like Maurice improve their
basic skills and enhance self confidence so that they can lead a
