Rudolph
is on the
run... for
charity
DOZENS of runners helped to raise
hundreds of pounds for charity at a
festively–themed fundraising event in
Ormskirk last weekend.
The Rudolph Run, held last Sunday
(November 25), saw scores of contestants
don Christmas–themed fancy dress
costumes for the event at Edge Hill’s
Sporting Edge athletics facility on St Helens
Road, with the Lancashire Defibrillator
Campaign, West Lancashire’s scout groups
among the North West Air Ambulance
among the charities which benefited.
Sue Murrin–Bailey, one of the event’s
organisers, said: “It went really well, and
although the weather on Sunday morning
might have put a few people off we still had
more than 140 runners taking part on the
day, helping to raise a lot of money for a
number of good causes.
“One of the highlights for me was seeing
members of all the emergency services, with
the exception of the air ambulance, in
uniform with all of their vehicles, for a
special race. It helped to show just how
important their role is, and how they work
together. I think everyone who took part in
the day not only raised a lot of money, but
had a lot of fun too.”
Among the highlights of the event was a
special race which saw representatives from
different branches of the emergency
services taking part, with the police first on
the scene to rescue a collapsed reindeer at
the finish line.
Pitch project
is underway
WORK is underway on laying ‘high quality’
all–weather pitches at Edge Hill University as
the first phase of a £15 million project to build
new sports facilities nears completion.
Part of the “state–of–the–art complex” will
be completed in time for Christmas for
students, staff and the community to enjoy.
The all–weather sports facilities together
with additional grassing on the land beyond
the University’s leisure centre are costing £9m
and will include 3D surfaces, multi–courts,
hockey and football pitches. The site will also
benefit from floodlighting.
Vice–chancellor John Cater said: “Good pitch
construction requires solid foundations, good
drainage and quality materials, which is why
we have chosen a highly reputable local
company to carry out the project.
“J Mallinson in Ormskirk are renowned for
their high profile work at stadiums such as the
City of Manchester Stadium, Goodison Park
and Old Trafford as well as training facilities
for Liverpool FC at Melwood.
“The end result will see the creation of the
eastern campus and will provide space for new
student learning and recreational facilities for
many years to come, making it a campus that
truly matches, in both quality and scale, the
best in the UK.”
Facilities will include running tracks, soccer,
rugby and athletics fields, netball and tennis
courts and a trim trail with exercise stations. In
time, a single–storey building will
accommodate an eight–court sports hall with
viewing gallery for basketball, netball,
badminton, five–a–side football and general
sports use, a 25–metre swimming pool, a
100–station fitness suite, aerobics studio,
health suite with sauna and steam rooms, a
café and lounge area.
The outdoor sports complex will be
completed next year, ready for the 2013/14
intake and community use from next Autumn.
Ormskirk and Skelmersdale, said: “Today
was a bit of competitive fun with our front
line emergency service partners. It also
reflected our inter agency approach to
emergency incidents and emphasised in a
fun way, the vital requirement for a
defibrillator at the scene of an emergency”.
A number of runners also took part to raise
money for their own charities on the day,
helping to boost the amount generated for
good causes.
Edward McCarthy, who took part to help
raise funds for West Lancs Positive Living,
said: “The Reindeer Run was really good
fun, we have took part over the last few
years and raised funds for good causes in
West Lancashire but also highlighted the
work that the various charities, including
ourselves do.” Plans are underway for
another event next year.
