The Champion • Wednesday 28 November 2012 WK Visit us @ www.ChampNews.com • 37 ENTERTAINMENT Packed line–up set for winter jazz weekend Report by Natasha Young JAZZ fans will be treated to a packed programme of 11 Southport concerts, when the ‘Jazz on a Winter’s Weekend’ festival returns to the town. The three–day event, taking place from February 1–3 at The Royal Clifton Hotel, will host a range of performances from the cutting edge to the soothingly smooth. The popular event has been a sell out for the last four years and organisers are hoping the 2013 festivities will be just as successful. Young London trumpeter Laura Jurd’s band will be the opener on the Friday, and northern jazz performers Iain Dixon, on saxes, and world class guitarist Mike Walker will bring the event to a close on the Sunday night. Other acts helping to lighten the post Christmas blues during the festival include trumpeter Jim Rotondi’s organ quartet and tenor sax star Eric Alexander from USA, along with New York’s Walter Smith 111’s band with guitarist Matthew Stevens. Norwegian saxophonist Marius Orchestra to perform their autumn concert CLASSICAL music lovers are being invited to Southport Orchestra’s autumn concert. The programme will open with the Academic Festival Overture Opus 80 by Johannes Brahms. The dramatic Cello Concerto by Antonin Dvorak, Opus 104 will be the central work of the concert featuring the soloist Gregor Cuff. The evening will also include Irving Berlin’s White Christmas Selection, Troika by Serge Prokofieff Opus 60 from his Symphonic Suite ‘Lieutenant Kije’ and the short but haunting Waltz from the Incidental Music to Lermontov’s Play, Masquerade by Aram Khachaturian, and concluding with Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride. The Southport Orchestra, with leader Lesley Mycock, will perform the concert under the baton of its musical director, MUSIC lovers are being invited to celebrate a century of jazz at an intimate concert in West Lancashire next week. Douglas Music, which organises performances in Parbold, said its next event will see them host an evening of jazz favourites played by saxophonist Alan Barnes and pianist David Newton, which takes place on December 8. A Douglas Music spokesperson said: “Alan Barnes returns to Parbold with David Newton, his long term friend from student days at Leeds College of Music, Saxophonist Marius Neset will perform at the festival. Code NA Neset will also bring his mixed UK–Scandinavian foursome and, from the sunshine of Italy, world class pianist Dado Moroni’s trio will be playing with top UK trombonist Mark Nightingale. Big band fans can get their highs Jeff Rimmer. The venue for the concert is St Luke’s Church, on St. Luke’s Road, Southport and it will start at 7.30pm on Saturday, December 8. Anita joins Alan Barnes’s band in a tribute to the music of American song writer Johnny Mandel, with especially commissioned arrangements by Alan. And the entertainment won’t stop between concerts as a host of fringe performers are also lined up to play, along with jazz art and photography exhibitions and the Jazz Shop for recorded music and trade exhibitors. Throughout the weekend there will be a supply of real ale, and BBC Radio 3 will be recording some of the gigs for their ‘Jazz Line Up’ programme. Young musicians to play concert SEFTON Young Musicians will perform their winter concert at Southport’s Floral Hall this Friday (November 30). The talented ensembles performing on the night include the Brass and String Ensemble, Sefton Voices, Jazz and Wind Orchestra, Birkdale High School and Greenbank High School and the Concert Wind Band. Latin Lounge to host dixieland show AN evening of dixieland jazz will take place at Southport’s Latin Lounge venue next month, as part of the Occasional Jazz series. It’s panto time again and the Waterloo and Crosby Theatre Company is back with its 31st annual festive production – Cinderella. More than 30 adults and children, with dancers from Laura Elizabeth Dance Studios, will star in the show at The Civic during the run up to Christmas. Written by Roy Hartley and directed by Pamela Foy, this year’s panto once again promises traditional family fun.
