Stephen Hughes–Alty and John Delahunty, the Laurel and Hardy of the SDC, were superb as the two clowns playing 130 parts between them and couldn’t have worked harder as they changed roles, voices, costumes and sets by the minute whilst a portly Adrian Roberts, complete with a bushy moustache, played the part of the upper–crust Englishman, Richard Hannay, to perfection. Totally convincing in her Beth Milligan started off as seductive foreign spy, Annabella Schmidt, then became Margaret, a downtrodden Scottish landlady, and ended up in Hannay’s arms as Pamela, looking the image of Marilyn Monroe. The timing was spot on except when it deliberately went wrong, as when the phone continued ringing after it was answered or the gun fired several seconds after the trigger was pressed, both of which had the audience in stitches. The music was carefully chosen to match the plot so for the train ride we got ‘Coronation Scot’ (remember Paul Temple?), the signature tune, ‘Startime’ for the London Palladium scenes, bagpipes over the border and a wonderful snatch of ‘Roses of Picardy’ by Stephen Hughes–Alty that would have John SDC performed The 39 Steps. ©Fletcherhill Photography. The plot remained pretty true to the original John Buchan novel with Hannay being chased across Scotland by police and spies and ending up with Mr Memory at the London Palladium and a hilarious scene where he wrestles with a dummy that a minute ago was a person. The show was very reminiscent of the ‘Dick Barton’ play the company put on in 2011 and, like that, owed a lot of its style to The Goon Shows. One of the best plays for a long time and every credit to director, James Hughes–Alty, for managing to organise 33 scenes at non–stop pace, co–ordinating the music and sound effects and never once descending into chaos. Star rating: 8 out of 10. An exhilarating evening.
