store bosses
‘We were treated like dogs’ fumes John

A FORMER worker of the Comet Distribution
Centre in Skelmersdale, who was one of the 66
people to be made redundant at the site, has
spoken of his fury after they were given no
notice of the job losses.
John Taylor, 40, who grew up in Burscough
and now lives in Chorley, had worked for the
company’s home delivery service for nearly
seven years and has now been left with no job
just weeks before Christmas.
The former employees of the failing retailer
first heard that their jobs were going in a
national newspaper.
Then they were called in for a meeting on
Monday, November 19, and a message from
the administrators (Deloitte), of the
redundancies was read out.
John said: “It felt like a bombshell when we
heard about the job losses.
“We were given no notice, no notice payment,
and if we want redundancy payment we have
to claim it off the government. We feel that we
have been treated like dogs, and left high and
dry.”
John believes they should have been given
notice of the redundancy, and added: “If we
had had three months notice, I could have
prepared, and put wages aside.
“After all the loyalty I have shown to the
company, I feel like just a number. I also have a
mortgage to pay, and children to provide for.”
John also is shocked at the decision as he said
he had been busy this year, and commented:
“We had been told that there was plenty of
work to see us through to December. I had been
taking stock from the centre to customer’s
homes, and then installing it.
“In the last three months I had been working
four hours on and four hours off. I had been
working 14 to 15 hours a day, and it is meant to
be 12. I was making a lot of drops, and I must
have been working over the working time

very busy as well. So I can’t understand the job

losses.” Now, John doesn’t know what the
future holds and he added: “Dixons is offering
jobs at its centre at the other side of
Manchester, but I think it would be difficult to
travel there every morning. I would have to
leave home very early, and I’m not prepared to
do that.”
West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper
commented: “Coming so close to Christmas
this is a very difficult and stressful time for all
the workers and their families.
“ACAS have advised me that employees
should submit a grievance letter to Comet if
they believe they have not conducted the
consultation correctly, been given the right
notice or believe they haven’t dealt with the
redundancies in the right manner. If there is no
response from the company administrators
within 21 days then the workers have the right
to make an application for an Employment
Tribunal to hear the case.
“What the workers need from the company
administrators right now is good clear
communication on where they stand. To this
end I have written to the administrators to
raise the workers’ concerns and seek answers
to their questions.”
