zu den USA pochte. Polen hat das Integrationsprojekt eigentlich nie in Frage gestellt und
sich selbst – und zwar seit der wiedergewonnenen Unabhängigkeit –, stets als festes
Bestandteil davon gesehen. Das Land trat der Union als verhältnismäßig stabiler,
reformierter und zunehmend reicher werdender Staat bei, der den Willen und die Fähigkeit
besitzt einen vernünftigen Beitrag zur europäischen Einigung zu leisten.

Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic and European Integration:
During and After the Cold War
This article deals with the attitude of Czechoslovakia and subsequently the Czech Republic (CR)
towards the European Economic Community (EEC), the European Community (EC) and then
the European Union (EU). The purpose of the article is two-fold. First, it analyses the main
features as well as turning points of Czechoslovak/Czech foreign policy in relation to European
integration. Second, it provides an overview of existing sources on this subject. Our main finding
is that the transformation of Czechoslovak/Czech policy in relation to European integration from
hostility to a quest for membership was in principle a sudden one and reflected the fall of the
communist regime. Still, whereas the shift to political cooperation and accession efforts was
indeed abrupt, economic or, more precisely, trade cooperation predates the fall of communism.
With regard to existing sources, there is a lack of the secondary literature on the specific subject
of Czechoslovak/Czech foreign policy in relation to the European integration process, especially
in the communist period. Those who are interested in the policy of the communist
Czechoslovakia towards the EEC/EC must rely on the works dealing with the attitude of the
EEC/EC towards the Central and Eastern European communist countries as a bloc.
La Tchécoslovaquie/Tchéquie et l'intégration européenne:
pendant et après la Guerre Froide
L'article est consacré à l'attitude de la Tchécoslovaquie/République tchèque face à la
Communauté Economique Européenne (CEE), puis, plus tard, face à la Communauté
Européenne (CE) et à l'Union Européenne (UE). Deux aspects sont examinés de près, à
savoir, les caractéristiques et les tournants de la politique extérieure de la Tchécoslovaquie/
Tchéquie au regard de l'intégration européenne d'une part, et d'autre part la littérature
secondaire y relative. Le principal constat consiste en la nature subite du changement
d'attitude de la Tchécoslovaquie/Tchéquie vis-à-vis du processus d'intégration européenne
qui, d'une hostilité ouverte, tourne en une demande d'adhésion. Le bouleversement rapide
reflète l'effondrement du régime communiste. Il s'applique toutefois essentiellement au
domaine politique car, au niveau des relations économiques et commerciales, les origines
lointaines du rapprochement remontent au temps de la démocratie populaire. Concernant les
sources, il convient de signaler le manque de littérature secondaire, surtout pour la période
antérieure à la révolution de velours. Partant, les chercheurs intéressés en la matière doivent
bon gré mal gré se contenter des travaux consacrés aux relations de la CEE/CE avec les
Etats d'Europe centrale et orientale en tant que bloc communiste.
